Padmaavat (2018)
Poor diection - great acting
My take on Padmavaat movie
Acting performance was great.
Direction by Sanjay Leela Bhansali (SLB) was weak. He could not match his own standards when compared to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The major flow was in keeping the songs in the movie - that was just out of place. The music was weak when compared to his earlier movies. Jodha Akbar which was a much better film.
As for the storyline - I thought it was a bit weak as the escape was an easy one. Other flaws there - such as kidnapping the king - why were they so naive in their defense and preparation acknowledging that Khilliji was untrustworthy?
Movie should have been about Padmavati - but she was given little attention. Khillji was given more attention. There was little about life, the personality of Padmavati - the songs and dances could have been eliminated and time could have been allocated to her. Jodha - Akbar, Jodha was given more priority.
Action scenes were good. The sword fight scene was good. Art direction, costumes, the cinematography was marvelous. It was a good way to show Indian culture and tradition.
Historic validity: Although there are claims that the movie was based on a poem which lacks historical validity - many so-called Holy texts are also written in a similar way - If you can question Padmavati - then you can question the existence of Jesus and Krishna as well.
Moving on, as for Jauhar (self-immolation) - historically there are dozens of cases where hundreds or thousands of Hindu women gave up their lives when Indian kingdoms were invaded by Mughal, Turkish, Arabs and other forces from 11- 17th Century.
A well-documented example was when Akbar (portrayed in Jodha Akbar) invaded Rajistan, 30 k Hindu soldiers were killed - head showcased in city and thousands of women committed suicide. There are many other cases.
A major theme was about ethics in war - about the Dharma of Hindus. About Hindu culture and resilience of Hindu women. My sincere respect to all those women who sacrificed their lives rather than being treated like slaves.
I think the movie will shed light on the history of India and help Indians be more vigilant in their defense in decades to come.
Dear Zindagi (2016)
Could have been better
The story could have been better with more cases handled by Dr. Khan who gave a good performance and valuable perspectives about life and relationships. Alia Bhatt played a role which did not actually need extra focus which made the movie quite boring.
More characters with psychological problems handled by Dr. Khan would have given much weight to the story. Alia Bhatt character showed the status of a confused generation torn between west and eastern culture that fails to understand the difficulties parents go through to offer a luxurious life to children yet they are ignored. This is the escapist wannabe generation who tries to copy the west and get their psychological problems.
Cannot be compared to Dhoni and Pink which were brilliant. Nonetheless, I give this 7 over 10 for an attempt .
PK (2014)
The Place of God and Man Made Religions in the Universe
I found PK the Film as one of the best from Indian Cinema as it has expressed with comedy deep questions that deal with the meaning of temples, worship, prayers for material needs and representation of God and politics of religion and versions of God.
The movie has a deep spiritual theme that will challenge those who are brainwashed by pastors and priests to contribute to a system of superstition and fear that survives merely on chance and luck and survives in name of God. This system goes into war to protect itself and currently its extreme forms have been the cause of terrorism.
A major aspect expressed was that we are a minute planet in the universe of billions of galaxies and to fight to protect God is immature as one who is so vast - the creator of universe does not need any protection. Mankind has been fighting of its own shallow ideals about sprituality in name of religion.
One of the best acting, directing and screenplay from Indian cinema with deep underlying message about our place in the universe and the purpose of religion. We do not need an imaginary God, we need each other. We need hope and it does not need to be based on fairy tales, but on spiritual values that enforce humanism.
Her (2013)
An awesome film that links philosophy of mind and artificial intelligence.
A great story, this awesome movie has great direction and acting. It raises some interesting questions in the areas of artificial intelligence, consciousness and philosophy of mind: about the nature of our reality, who we really are and what defines our personality. It questions information theory and how it links with consciousness. What drives our existence, desires and about our spiritual Self and moreover, God.
In near future, we will have similar programs and we will face similar problems. Such systems of artificial consciousness can be helpful in monitoring people and in predicting criminal behavior, at times also be dangerous, privacy and confidentiality would be an issue.
