Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Pure Dung
If this was in poundland I wouldn't buy it.
Woeful plot, zero chemistry between the main characters. Actually does more damage tha The Last Jedi
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
A New Hope
I entitle my review A New Hope as I walk out of the cinema feeling like I have just watched the Star Wars of our generation!
As a huge Marvel fan (both comics and film) I was delighted to hear this film was getting made with the perfect choice of Guardians and what a perfect cast to play them. The biggest surprise for me was Dave Bautista who I thought was only cast for his size but his delivery was spot on for Drax. Chris Pratt was hilarious whilst still excellent at delivering some of the films most emotional scenes.
CGI in this film was super, there's nothing I hate more than too much CGI in a film but it was so good in Guardians that I was completely lost in it. Never have a seen space look so good, the battles were incredible and Groot and Rocket never looked out of place (aside from being a tree and raccoon).
Gunn is the perfect director for this, his tone, his balance of comedy, action and emotion blended perfectly and directing GOTG would have been no easy job. DC are still trying hard to get Justice League going, Marvel just made a film with a talking tree and Raccoon and it was AWESOME!!!
Not a bad performance all round and comic fans will be happy with certain nods and winks scattered throughout. Probably my top Marvel film yet, it has the fresh new feeling the first Iron Man had with all the action and humour of The Avengers. 10 stars from me, even if your not a comic book or sci-fi fan, this movie has something for everyone.
Kick-Ass 2 (2013)
Empire Strikes Back!
I'm a huge fan of the first Kick Ass film and the comics, so I'm a tough fan to please but this film exceeded my expectations! In a year full of over-hyped superhero films Kick Ass 2 came along with a low budget, no contracted actors roped in and R rating and gave me the most entertaining hour and 40 minutes I've paid for all year!
Excellent acting all round especially from Jim Carrey and Chloe Moretz, this film doesn't copy and paste the first but stays close enough to it cinematically that the new director takeover isn't largely noticeable.
I don't understand why the film hasn't been rated better, 10 out of 10 from me. Super on all levels!
Man of Steel (2013)
Take a bow Zack Snyder, Epic!
When I went in to see this film I was excited but tried to lower my expectations after reading a few mixed reviews but there was no need. This film blew all my expectations away it was amazing! As a comic fan I love a lot of different aspects of the character and the last few films and TV shows lacked a lot of what the character needed but Man of Steel delivered in all aspects.
First of all Krypton matched a world as beautiful as what was created in Avatar and was a believable as a home planet for Kal El. The film expands on both stories seen on the first two Superman films with Zod and the end of Krypton and the struggles of Clark growing up in a world he's just a little too different in.
The battle scenes where epic and cgi was spot on, like they did back in the original by making a film where you would believe this man could fly Snyder has given us a film where we believe in the character, feel for his story, root for him as a hero and leave the cinema begging for a sequel. Take a bow Zack Snyder!
Thor (2011)
A Mighty Portrayal
Thor was without a doubt the Marvel hero I was most afraid to see take on his own movie. A hero who to non Marvel fans was relatively unheard and unknown of compared to the likes of Spiderman and Hulk. As a Marvel fan I feared how he could be portrayed, how he could be viewed as a believable God/Superhero. Could this be a standalone film or just a tie in needed for the Avengers film to work? When I saw this in the cinema I was blown away! On par with the standards of Iron Man and X men 2!
Chris Hemsworth brings us a hero we love, root for and most of all believe in. On both acting and physique he makes the perfect Thor. Hiddleston is a wise choice for Loki and taking on Anthony Hopkins as Odin was a genius move. Whilst Kenneth Brannagh seemed a dangerous choice to direct a superhero film he delivers on all aspects and his knowledge of all elements of film are taken on board and used with some scenes almost Shakespearean.
To this point Thor remains my favourite Marvel release yet. 10 stars from me.
