Consequence and/or Conscience

1945 is not a war film. But this film is after WWII in Hungary. It tells the story of a small village and its leader.

The black and white screens slows down everthing but help to focus on the story, feelings and motions all the time.

Good acting.

This film could be Péter Rudolf's best dramatic role until now. Congrat to Péter. József Szarvas, Ágnes Szirtes and others do very good job.

A day I wish I live there could be an extended storyline version where all unfinished stories will be told for other characters in the village...

It must be very intresting storyline to continue....and some missed opportunities we have now could be fullfilled on that day.

Powerful, logical and heartbreaking.
18 February 2010
First of all, I'm not familiar with Chinese history, so I wouldn't say anything about its historical bases. Still, this movie worth the time with no doubt. No matter where you live.

Powerful, logical and heartbreaking. I say powerful because we got a well painted picture about the main characters in the first half. Yes, the movie does not only focus on the high profile action scenes and blood. That's one of its strengths. The audience - this time it's me - had enough time to acquaint the persons and like them. For this reason losing some of them is a heartbreaking effect in the second half. I think it's not a spoiler. Anyone can guess it who has seen the trailer. The acting is OK (some actors were great, especially Xueqi Wang) but my opinion is that the script and the director have done this movie for that it is. I really enjoyed that the movie has avoid to use mindless clichés, like ultimate fight of good vs. evil. The main bad character had also deep conviction that he has been doing the right thing for his country/highness. As it is so, for me, he was authentic in his role.

Now there's only one word has to be explained - logical. Unfortunately I can't do it without revealing some moments from the story, so I leave it to you. Find it out yourself. If you like heroic tales, you should love it.

I hope this movie will be released on DVD in my country, too.

Gran Torino (2008)

Hail to Gran Eastwood Torino!
20 February 2009
Once the humankind's going to have a common wish to collect and save the best remembrances of that wonderful thing we called films, I'm sure that Clint Eastwood's name will be painted with golden letters in that safe and nuclear-prof caverns down there. His work and art something must see for the next generations as well.

The Gran Torino itself wasn't the most interesting story I've ever seen. In my opinion some of its topics were told on a better way in the past, furthermore some actors, especially the young boy who played Thao, was weak. Still. This film has an undeniable power which comes from Mr. Eastwood. The character he plays is strong and have the rightful wisdom according to his old age. It's obviously not the wisdom of Walt Kowalski, but the wisdom, mimicry and heart of Mr. Eastwood. He carried the whole film on his old shoulder: get angry, spit and teaches things to a young man. He has gave the power for Walt Kowalski.

My vote was 6 for the story and 10 for Mr. Eastwood's performance so the sum is 8.

(I hope this film's not going to be translated to any language. It's not because of the difficult contexts or anything. It's simply because of well placed emphasis used by Mr. Eastwood. If that ones are not handled carefully by a proper actor, they are going to be lost which will underestimate the whole film for the viewers.)

Legend of the Seeker (2008–2010)

Long and beautiful adventure
19 February 2009
Usually I do not really like TV series since they take too much time from other activities of life and it seems they are never going to end. I had such a bad feeling with lot of very popular series in the present like Lost and in past like Xena the Warrior princess. Generally they were too long and I can only remember for some cut before the advertisements but there's nothing left in me about their endgame. Obviously a series is created to give a neverending stream for audience so I shouldn't have to expect any special endgame in them. But I like that ones which have.

The Legend of the Seeker has good endgame in almost every part. The stories it tells can stand alone although there's a big and far objective to be done by the characters. No, don't be wrong! LOTS more then some good fantasy episodes put to one common chain. A lot more! I think the first thing when somebody tells a fantasy tale is to create the world or the universe - whatever we call - where it's playing. I hasn't read the book yet but I can say that I got the feeling and rules of that world from beginning. Some fantasy films made a fatal mistake when they show only the necessary slices from the world. No doubt, that's enough to understand the story, but not enough to let the viewer love the place and the sceneries. Some films tell their own stories like there could be no other events in that world and no other people would live there then we watch. Evil and good.

Legend of the Seeker is different from this point of view, too. There are grey people and turned into white but it should not be obviously done so. It can happen anyhow or at least we can imagine. :) The episodes are fast and have strong dramaturgy. The pieces of the events are mixed but every one of them are going to find its place before the end. The cast is also very good. I especially liked the wizard with his obtrusive eyes and Cahlan with his white and lovely aura. I've found only one problem with the performer, the dark lord Darken Rahl. He was too young and he wasn't a real craggy man how I can imagine such a strong tyrant. But it's my problem.

I don't agree with those who complained that the CGI is weak. It was intermediate and should not be compared to LOTR or other super productions. I think this is not that money bag! Finally I think it's a long and beautiful adventure. Better then any other fantasy series created until now.

Para (2008)

Entertaining crime-comedy
14 February 2009
** Mid-age friends try to watch ghosts through a web-cam when accidentally become witnesses of a girl's kidnapping. The lead character Lajos (former cop) convinces them to get in the ring for the ransom. As this fumbler gang go deeper into the crime they must face that this rescue mission is not their weight.**

The plot is not new but very funny as adopted here. Typical small fish-large fish situation salted by nice humor. The music was also unforgettable in the film and worth to listen again and again.

If you like Argo, you should like this! Although it's not a certain action movie.

Excellent painting about the dictatorships work out
25 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
*** In 1944 - during a WWII - a fascism regime has came into power in Budapest. Although the hard circumstances few men come to drink and spend every evenings in a boozer together to speak about their common acquaintances and the proper and finest making of the fresh calf's meat. They are Mr. Gyuricza, the watchmaker, Mr. Kiraly, the book agent, Mr. Kovacs, the carpenter and Bela colleague, the innkeeper. One day an unknown photographer come to join them exactly when Gyurizca put a question in his usual satirical method to the company: what if they could rebirth and choose between the roles of the rich tyrant and the tortured slave who's still honorable. What would be? That time they don't know yet that this theoretic question must be answered very soon in a real torture room. ***

This movie paints excellent picture how the dictatorship has worked in deed and how the regime has caught and changed the common people into something they never would became. It's not a 1984 like we've seen that in Orwell's powerful but mostly utopian vision, neither it's not really a V for Vendetta which is Hollywood's romantic Zorro-like dream about a totalitarian society. It's the story of the nameless people, the nobody who has the power at will, but no will to use their power. The director, Zoltan Fabri handles the characters properly. The dialogs are great and the filming is amazing. Some people may say it's dark but I think it has more then bright light to show how the regime has manipulated the common people who lived in the country. They didn't print any handout against the regime. They wouldn't explode anything. They just would live in the country. Still. They were hazardous for the regime. Once they got their accordance and reason, they got the power and could not be stopped anymore. Or almost not. This is what the regime never let to happen.

I think that the main oppressor character (formed by Zoltan Latinovics - in my opinion he was the one of the greatest actors who has ever lived) has right.

'It's tiny issue when somebody drop a bomb to a party house. Some paints things to the walls. It's also tiny issue. Some shoot few friend of ours that's also a tiny issue. Why? Because we are going to catch them and hang up or shoot them. Before or after but finally they will be all dead for sure. So they are all tiny issues. The remaining ones matter! Whose don't explode bomb, don't paint or anything. They live among us. They are the mass. We may have some real problem with them.'

Fascism or communism. Doesn't matter. Both has followed the same overwhelming cliché what Ferenc Santa (the writer) put so effectively into his characters' mouth.

'These four men have to learn that you really have the right to tell them that their wife is a whore or beat them as you wish. They must memorize that they can do nothing but you can do anything! Keep them in doubts. Let them fear, including the innocents and criminals... so you will beat them on a pedagogic basis.'

I'm wondering that this movie could be created during the 70s of Hungary (for the readers are not native Hungarians, we have a communist regime until 1989). But I'm quite sure that the oppressors of that time didn't recognize themselves in this mirror as they acted right after 1956 in the darkest years of the communism. Maybe Mr. Gyuricza, the watchmaker said properly. 'The tyrant was sure that he is the best ruler in world because he acts according to the morality of the age and he has right reason.'

One more thing: in my opinion this movie precisely open up the sad fact that almost all dictatorships have left shame in the nameless survivors' soul for something, to hardly let them speak and trust again to each other. It's one of the oppressors' well crafted advantage.

In total: Excellent movie. Deep and touching. Good acting. Honorable question. What is your choice would be?

I can recommend this anyone who wish to know more about that psychology of the theme. Unfortunately the DVD release I got has got only Hungarian language. I hope that some dubs or subtitles are available somewhere for other languages to show this great movie for a greater audience.

The Gamers (2002 Video)
10/10
Worth to see anyone but all of its fun can be seen if you play RPG
18 August 2008
It's an excellent telling of the absurd situations take place during a game and the typical players' attitudes which make everybody to laugh around the table. They will feel the same while this film goes on.

While you watch how the gamers' words came to alive and how their characters really act, you will realize something you can simply call REWIND on the DVD players. :-) The time is not a factual thing in RPG so it can be handled on a much flexible way as you never can do in the real life. And that means lots of weird but still very funny situations. I believe that it's hard to understand for non-RPG fans but the reality can change many times in the game since one simple moment or a short event could take up to few real minutes to discuss. That's the case when we push PAUSE button. The film makers had to meet these situation a thousand times to show them so precisely and very funny form.

Beyond the fun with the time, other extreme RPG situations like 'you can do it since there's no rule against this' and the power of dice - rolling 20 and hit in almost impossible circumstances and rolling 1 for a really easy task and fail)- are also well caught. And much more.

I'm quite sure that some players will recognize his own party members when look at the players in the film. The guy who just drop by, roll some dices and goes. The rule master who knows the rules better then the DM. They are so typical characters.

You won't get high profile fantasy scenes from this film like movies which created from a few million dollars, but The Gamers have a fair look and it's enough to tell the story. I especially liked its music which can be mostly created on a simple synthesizer. Doesn't matter. It gives the desired feeling anyway.

I think this film got the point in all sense. My vote is 10 because of its unique idea and for that nice hour I couldn't stop laughing.

A message has to be learned
9 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I think there was nothing special in the story itself. We have already seen these moments (power, politics, and war) in other movies in many other forms and mixtures. I can't count how much movies were created.

What I much like is that this movie never wanted to show USA as holy liberator and a land which can not stand with cold blood while innocents are suffering by a suppressor. Of course, she can, if her interests say that. This time her interest obviously suggests to do something else. I don't believe that the billion dollar support which was given to Afganistan back to that years was up to one or few men only as the story has told but it was really good to see how Charlie Wilson character got his conviction when gone to a refugee camp. Here I have felt some idealistic line behind, while the movie would never say or suggest directly that Charlie has right and want to bring freedom for Afganistan. I think one of the most important virtue in this movie is its realistic portrayal about a senator who has the power to do what he wants but he did nothing important for a long time. He was just like anybody else: a human with passion and weakness. His love, Joanne also.

Tom Hanks was great as always but this time I felt Julia Roberts was a bit greater. Philip Seymour Hoffman was also noticeable in his role.

Let me close this comment with Charlie's quotas from the end: "These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world...and then we f...ed up the end game." I think, this is the message which has to be learned in this age for everyone who can spend one billion for a war but can not spend only one million for the stability of the regions he had leave his footsteps...

My rate was 8 for the movie.

Alone with a good opinion ;-)
19 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
When I've seen this movie I was curious what is the user rating of this at IMDb. Generally it helps me to decide if a movie is worth enough to watch or not.

Although I agree with the guys who said that this film has several weaknesses (for example that the music was not fit all scene and there was not too emphatic relationship between the hero and the heroine) what I can appreciate in it that is the pure characters and the interesting job with the pictures. Somebody just claimed these things in the movie (he said characters have no motivations and the pictures are in-consequence in the style) but my opinion is that the movie which tells everything about its main characher's life without let the viewer see few years of his/her life is unreal and too much. I like when there are some minor moments in characters and in the story which remain covered. If the filmmakers let it up to my fantasy I like that. :) (But not on that hard way as Donnie Darko did. That was too much for me too.)

The Alone In The Dark wasn't a great film but fair. A common story with some myth, monsters and heroes in the present days. There were three memorable visual scene for me. The monsters run down from the hill between the trees, one of them jumps to the helicopter and third one is the landscape of the other plane. These were interesting and spectacular experiences really. Also the narrator's (Slater's) voice was fit to the dark behaviour of this film precisely. He wasn't bad in his role.

My vote was 8 to bring the average up but this movie is not more then 6 at all.

life long bout for a human soul
17 February 2005
The film is not so heavy and dramatic at all as my summary is. The story tells about an orphan boy who has all ability to belong to both side to the good and the evil as well. From his early years both of them would like to have him and one becomes winner finally.

What I really like in this film that how it shows the classic story for the viewer. There are two antagonistic buildings on a small square. One is owned by a priest (the savior of some helpless children) and the other one changes several times (sometimes it's a forge, another time it's a craftsman's house) but it hides the same evil all the time.

In my opinion the square is not else then our lives before and after the big decisions which can lead us to the both ways and the only choice is up to us...

I can recommend it for all who enjoy such tales and some artistic line (but not too much) from a film. My vote is 8 for it since the acting had some lesser fault (most likely on the child actors) but all for this I got a great compensation for example from the wonderful music.

Üvegtigris (2001)

Funny movie with good actors
16 April 2004
Funny movie about some guys whose hang around a caravan canteen named Üvegtigris and live their life with many comic situations as it can happen with anybody here.

Why I really like this movie that there's a strong (of course excessive)satirical aspect in it to show some typical characters from the real life and their comics.

I agree with Grin, this is a new hope for the Hungarian film. Also I mean it doesn't contain a heavy-hearted or dramatic line what is there in many other Hungarian films in the last decades.

Probably we shall learn again how to make light movies only for the entertainment.
