Alien Valley (2012)
Pretty good fun; amazingly beautiful cast and great comment on what should happen to most reality TV
The character that opens the film, the cameraman, is a warm kind soul who gets on well with the gorgeous female floozy presenter. He manages to meet an equally kind soul in the shape of a beautiful ranger when they arrive on site to film their 'cattle mutilation' reality TV expose. The rest of the cast are sufficiently unbearable that they could all work on an LA reality TV show, but still with charisma enough that you can share the experience with them. They continue their investigation, but will they slice out more cattle tongue than they can chew?
Dark Was the Night (2014)
Something not written to a formula
The type of film you might be expecting, may not fit with the type of film they have made - that sounds weird but, let me explain. The characters in this film are very strong, and in the most part have a profound history which is disclosed to the audience as the film moves along. The history each character hold effects their interpretation of events and, as such, their response. The use of script pace & lighting, together with the soundtrack, really opens this film up to an audience that was not expecting a 'lake placid' type formula film. If you can leave expectation at the door, you will be rewarded.
Man of Tai Chi (2013)
Impressive understanding of Chinese culture
This film works on many levels and is not just an excuse for a lot of fighting. Keanu Reeves directs a tight plot with excellent actors all extremely well chosen. There is no flying about on wires or lengthening swords but there is a powerful message at the heart of this film and it is a lesson for China emerging once again as a world power. It is also a lesson at the heart of Chinese culture and Tai Chi. The film feels very slick and is filmed with an eye developed in Hollywood which is an interesting cocktail mixed with the Chinese actors and language - most of the film is in Mandarin but Reeves speaks English - to give a distinctive and interesting flavour. Reeves is the evil character symbolising corruption and a hunger for blood whilst the Man of Tai Chi battles with his inner demons to overcome his own loss of Chi.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
A pizza with every topping in the shop...
I saw this film at a private screening and it is basically a remake of Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan.
Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of Khan very well but everyone else is pretty lame.
So much goes on and so may films are borrowed from that halfway through you feel that you've been in the cinema for 10 hours.
The crew are quite irritating and every time they evaded disaster or death I was a little disappointed.
If you are new to Start Trek it might not be so bad but as an admirer of Wrath of Khan it felt like a bit of a wimp out by the writers.
Sofia (2012)
They didn't go out to make the worst movie in history, it just happened that way.
Presumably the author of this film had done something interesting prior to making this production, but that is difficult to believe. The plot is very confusing as it seems to pretend that there was doubt of an identity of a character also being another character but as it is the same actress there was never any doubt at all. The acting is terrible and the production is awful. Timothy Spall could not save this film and he usually at least add something. Whatever happened to make this film was a drastic mistake and I would advise you to destroy any copies you see on DVD. I would start by removing the DVD from the case and stamping on it in the shop, then snap it in front of the sales clerk, then burn the remaining parts, then remove the cover from the sleeve and burn it and then use the cover for a different DVD as it is no longer infected.
It is a shame they didn't try and make the worst movie in history because then you could take your hat off to a job done very convincingly.
