Do Revenge (2022)
A Cruel Intentions x Mean Girls baby
I didn't expect much except for fun. And it was.
The cliché things you noted in the start will get turned on it's head by a neat plot twist.
Making this movie incredibly juicy.
It embraced the clichés and made it more twisted. And yet managed to be about self identity and friendship in the end. Kudos to the writers.
I checked if the movie had at least any writer/producer connection to Cruel Intentions and/or Mean Girls. It certainly gave that vibe of being that movie for this generation.
I really enjoyed how Sarah Michelle Gellar was epic in every scene she's in. Fun cast from popular shows and movies we love.
Camila Mendes take a bow Queen!
Gonna look up what other projects Maya Hawke has.
The Swing of Things (2020)
Why would they do this?
Can't believe how Adelaide Kane, Chord Overstreet and the other more seasoned actors (whose names aren't on the top of my head), can be desperate enough to do this movie. I can stand shallow, feel good movies or even American Pie-like humor, but this is not it. Really unfunny.
The Kominsky Method (2018)
Strangely binge-able
I was only going to check out the first episode but found myself binging the entire season in one go and tearing up after the first episode.
The characters are flawed but not annoying. Very human and likeable.
The show is more about friendship, grieving and dealing with their age rather than its write-up. Glad I found it and looking forward to the next season.
The Kissing Booth (2018)
Better than the book
I've recently read the book and the differences they made for the film better.
Noah and Elle and have great chemistry.
Fun and re-watchable.
Liway (2018)
Worth your time
A little independent film based on real life: as a boy who didn't know he lived in a rebel prison camp.
Think Life is Beautiful but with a family and a bit of folklore.
I'm a Filipina with little appreciation of Filipino movies that are usually steeped in melodrama.
This film had no obvious "Big Bad" hulking over the protagonists. There's no preachy propaganda and not much violence.
I'm as impressed with the subtlety considering it's based on the director's real life.
Don't expect Hollywood-level cinematography. You never go to a Filipino film and expect that. It's great given the resources they had to make this humble film.
I think pro and anti Marcos people can't deny the most of the things surrounding their camp actually happened. Which makes this brilliant!
I wish international viewers can understand Tagalog to fully comprehend the subtle differences with the subtitles.
One of the best movies of my life. Definitely worth giving it a watch.
FYI. I didn't mean to watch this movie... Just hang out with a friend... I was expecting to get a headache but I'm glad I went.
