Cyrus (2010)
Surprisingly brilliant!
Having viewed some of the reviews here, I guess this movie is not for everyone. I caught it by chance on a movie channel and had never seen a preview or trailer of it which made me pretty neutral in terms of my expectations. This movie is not really a comedy and nor is it a drama, it has elements of both with a quirky kind of dark humor that pops up at the oddest most unexpected times, keeping you on the edge of your couch wondering what the next one will be. I gave it a 10 out of 10 because it did everything a good movie should. It made me laugh and empathize with the characters as well as keeping me glued to my seat wondering how it will end but hoping it would not because I was having such a good time. If you liked "Punch, Drunk, Love" you should like this one.
Exils (2004)
An experience not to be missed
A spiritual journey for the characters and audience alike. I saw this film at a film festival not knowing what to expect. There is not much plot or drama and for viewers seeking those they might be disappointed. What this film does have though is spirit and at intoxicating levels too. The cinematography combined with the music and the journey of the characters combine to put the receptive audience in a kind of trance. An especially memorable scene is a 15 - 20 minute long scene in which the female heroine is exorcised Algerian style, building slowly to a trance. The whole scene is filmed as one shot and the camera is more of a participant than an observer. An experience not to be missed.
Introduction to the End of an Argument (1990)
It explained itself without comentary. A clever idea.
Although this film has no plot or story, it makes a very strong case against western discrimination and stereotyping of Arabs... A long series of clips from mainly hollywood movies that contained Anti Arab comments or portrayals cut into a flowing collage. The best thing about it is that it needs no comment, no text, no words. It makes no judgment, makes no comment but rather allows the audience to watch and judge for themselves. An almost impossible feat in any other medium. A clever idea, well executed.
