Cover Girl (1944)
10/10
Cute
11 October 2012
Date: 11 October, 2012 -First Time Watch- Rusty (Rita Hayworth) is a showgirl at a small nightclub that is owned by her boyfriend Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly). She has an average life, spending her nights looking for pearls in oysters with Danny and mutual friend Genius (Phil Silvers) until another showgirl shows her a job position at a local magazine looking for their next cover girl. Naturally she applies and gets the position, which leads to fame but tearing her away from Danny and Genius. Rita Hayworth was just beginning her climb to ultimate super stardom when the movie was released and was basically centered around her. Yet, I found her performance average and unmoving. She basically acted like a woman with a lot of drama in her life. Phil Silvers' performance was also average. It was really Gene Kelly who gets the praise. He had only done a few movies before 'Cover Girl' and this movie ultimate shot him into fame. I see why and his performance is really the greatest thing about the movie, especially when he dances with his conscience, that's really neat to see. It's overall a good movie with a predictable ending however I still enjoyed it, but it's not a favorite.

Sinatra's performance was amazing!
26 August 2012
Date: August.26, 2012 -First Time Watch- Frankie Machine (Sinatra) returns home after six months in rehab, determined to not fall back into all ways. But his wife, Zosh (a complete psychopath if you ask me) and his card buddies continue to try to bring him back down and get hooked again. This is one of the first movies to address drug addiction and the writers did a real job presenting it. The movie itself is like a six or seven but what boosted it up to a nine for me was Sinatra's performance. He was outstanding! He played a drug addict so good and the scene when he's in Molly's apartment quitting cold turkey is just so raw. It was like what you expected a person to be going through with drawls. I'm really surprised Sinatra didn't win the Oscar for this, he was nominated but it went to Ernest Borgnine for 'Marty'. I haven't seen 'Marty' yet but I find it hard that Borgnine was able to beat Sinatra's performance in this. I read that Sinatra firmly believed that this movie was more deserving of the Oscar then his role of Maggio in 'From Here to Eternity' and honestly I can see why he said it. The movie was very solid and very worth wild watching.

Gene and Frank are perfect!
25 August 2012
Date: August.25, 2012 -First Time Watch- On Gene Kelly's hundredth birthday, TCM ran a marathon of his movies and no surprise the three movies Gene starred in alongside Frank Sinatra were featured. I recorded all three and this is the first one I watched and boy what a way to start! This movie is just so sweet. The storyline is average but the way it was executed was fantastic! I couldn't but fall in love with both Gene and Frank. Gene's voice is amazing, especially when he first calls his girlfriend. The phone scene just makes you feel like your own boyfriend would talk to you that sweetly. Then there's Frank. Frank was just adorable! I love how he plays a guy who can't talk to girls when in fact he was with just with about everyone in Hollywood during that time. His sweetness throughout the movie makes you just wish you had a boyfriend like him. I definitely think if I was around during this time I would be a huge Sinatra fan. While this movie is just average, I have to give it extra point simply because of Gene and Frank. I can't wait to watch their other two films! 8/10

Pal Joey (1957)
10/10
A Real Treat
12 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: August.12, 2012 -First Time Watch- Continuing my journey through Frank Sinatra films I watched 'Pal Joey' next. In it Sinatra plays Joey Evans, a lady's man who wants nothing else then to run his own joint. He soon finds himself in the middle of two women, Linda English (Novak) a show girl and Vera Simpson (Hayworth) a wealthy widow. If you ask me, you couldn't go wrong with either women. I'm not a big musical person but I rather enjoyed this one. It didn't have too many musical numbers and the acting was really good. I especially love the scenes between Joey and Linda at the house where they're renting rooms right next to each other. Also a nice touch was the little dog that becomes Joey's after Linda pulls a bad trick on him. I really did like this movie and Frank Sinatra is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors.

Jane Russell Stole the Show
12 August 2012
Date: August.12, 2012 -First Time Watch- With the fiftieth anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death, TCM ran a marathon of Marilyn Monroe's movies and this happened to be one of the movies they picked. The story follows two showgirls, Lorelei (Monroe) and Dorothy (Russell). Lorelei is engaged to a wealthy guy (a bit of a nerd if you ask me) who's father does not approve. While her fiancé tries to convince his father to let him marry Lorelei, Lorelei and Dorothy take a cruise to France. Of course nothing goes as plans and the two girls are launched into a series of laughter. To be honest, Jane Russell steals the show. She seems like the kind of person you would want to be around you. She's fun, crafty and smart, everything that Lorelei needs to help her getting through this cruise. I can also see why in real life Monroe and Russell became friends. They had such good chemistry in the movie that it's unfortunate that didn't do another movie together. This movie provides plenty of laughter and you have to check out Monroe's iconic 'Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend' part.

Funnier Then I Thought
12 August 2012
Date: August.12, 2012 -First Time Watch- After hearing all the good right ups on this movie I decided I had to check it out for myself. The story follows two police officers, Morton Schmidt (Hill) and Greg Jenko (Tatum) who want to get their first bust and stop patrolling parks. Since their chief finds them incompetent of doing anything right he sends them to Jump Street, where they will go undercover as high school students and find out who is supplying kids with drugs. Of course a series of events occur that provides plenty of laughs, more then I expected. Channing Tatum is fantastic and he should do more comedy. I really enjoyed this movie, but I could have gone with a little less swearing. Definitely not a good movie for kids under fifteen to watch. Overall an enjoyable movie and I can't wait for the sequel! 8/10

A Series That Has Run It's Course
12 August 2012
Date: August.12, 2012 -First Watch- Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return in the third installment of 'Men in Black' as Agents J and K. When Boris the Animal escapes from prison, Agent K decides to go in this mission alone but Agent J being Agent J decides to help and travels back in time to kill the Boris the Animal. As with most sequels it was alright but nothing compared to the original. The problem with sequels and prequels is that you already know a lot of the jokes or what the characters do. You know Agent J is the funny guy and that K is the serious one who J pokes fun at. At far as sequels go this movie was good, better then most and the back in time thing was neat. But, I think this serious has run it's course and should be put away.

Suddenly (1954)

Not too Bad
27 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 27 July, 2012 -First Time Watch- Having just seen 'From Here To Eternity' and loving Frank Sinatra in it I decided to watch another Sinatra film. Since I was unable to find 'The Tender Trap' co-starring Debbie Reynolds I decided 'Suddenly' instead. The story did sound somewhat usual; President is coming to town and Sinatra plays an assassin that tries to get him. The ending is predictable but I decided wanted to see it. Sterling Hayden plays the sheriff in the small town of Suddenly. He is good friends with widow Ellen, her son Pidge and Ellen's father-in-law Peter. Ellen lost her husband during World War Two and has really not moved on. I understand it's hard to lose someone so close to you like a husband in such a tragic way, but for goodness sakes Ellen just won't let it go! She's definitely overbearing to her son, who wants a play gun but she doesn't want him to have it since she's afraid it'll lead to violence. I agree with her father-in-law: "Stop acting like a woman Ellen". Moving on. Anyways, Sinatra arrives in town with his two assistants (dumb assistants might I add I would have picked smarter people to help me out) and takes Ellen, Pidge, the sheriff, and Peter hostage. You see there house overlooks the train station, the perfect spot to shot the president. Thus beginning a rush against time to stop Sinatra and save the president. There has been tons of movies about this topic and you always knows how it ends; the president is saved and the bad guy dies. This movie is no exception. Yet I really liked this movie more then the others. For a few reasons; 1) The acting was a lot better then most movies (Sinatra was really good, I think he could become one of my favorite actors) 2) It wasn't very long (I get tired of movies that go on and on and on) 3) The dialogue was so much better then most movies! Those are the three reasons why I gave this movie such a high rating. Now, is it for everyone? No, most likely only die hard Sinatra fans will love this movie. Or people like me, people aren't die hard Sinatra fans but love older movies with more interesting dialogue. If you're a person who loves things blowing up and enjoy movies that are longer then an hour and fifteen minutes then I suggest you watch another killing the President movie. Overall this movie is not too bad I would recommend it.

Rebecca (1940)

A Magnificent Film
18 July 2012
Date: 18 July, 2012 -First Time Watch- I love old Hollywood movies, mostly because they had good story lines and fantastic acting. Alfred Hitchcock does an amazing job with this in almost every movie he did. 'Rebecca' is an example of a another amazing old Hollywood film. The story opens with Joan Fontaine finds Laurence Olivier (he was so young and I felt oddly attracted to him) on the ledge of a cliff, ready to jump in. She stops him and they met up again later that day. They spend lots of time with each other and soon marry, despite the fact that Ms. Fontaine is unprepared for her new role as Olivier's wife. Trouble only continues when Ms. Fontaine arrives at the large estate and finds that everyone, especially the head maid Miss. Danvers, compares her to the greatly loved Rebecca, Olivier's first wife who died tragically a year before when she took her boat out by herself and drowned. But, as always Mr. Hitchcock throws in several twists and turns with a surprising conclusion. Definitely a very well done film with plenty of action and suspense to keep you interested.

Not Too Bad
14 July 2012
Date: 14 July, 2012 -First Time Watch- So, it was my younger sister's turn to pick a movie for our family to watch. I usually dread this since she always picks really bad movies and I thought this movie would be no exception. Since, it seems to me, most werewolf movies are made on low budgets. Even though it was produced by the same people who did 'Underworld', which is good, I still thought it wasn't going to be that good. Surprisingly, I found the movie decent. The storyline is not spectacular by any means, to me it seems like it's been done before, but it was still well done. Not exactly a must see if you ask me but it still provided some decent entertainment.

Rope (1948)
6/10
Not the Best Hitchcock movie ever
1 July 2012
Date: 1 July, 2012 -First Time Watch- I got 'Rope' over five months ago and didn't have time to watch it till now. 'Rope' is the story of two college men, Brendon and Philip, who murder their fellow student David, hide him a chest and have people come over for dinner and fool them. Yet, it is obvious from the start that their plans won't go as planned since Philip feels guilty of committing the murder and their professor, Rupert, is also coming over. Soon, Rupert becomes suspicious of their activities and decides to investigate himself. The movie is a normal Hitchcock film, yet I didn't feel as much suspense as I normally do when I see a Hitchcock film. James Stewart played his character well, as usual. The two actors that played Brendon and Philip also did very well. Yet, this movie does not measure up to the great storyline normally produced by Hitchcock ('Psycho' for example). Overall, it was a well done movie.

Not as good as I expected
27 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 27 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- Like everyone else, I was interested in seeing 'The Avengers' so I finally went to go see it after it came out over a month ago and has grossed over six hundred million. After the movie was over, I realized it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The storyline was like ever other action movie. Bad guy wants something. Some complications between the group. Lots of cars flying around. Good guys win. Why does this movie do better? Don't ask me. I'm not saying the movie was terrible, it was enjoyable for the most part (Downey had some awesome one liners!) but it wasn't spectacular. If you want see this movie, definitely go see it at the theaters. If you want till DVD, I'll think you'll be disappointed even more since you weren't in the theater to get the whole experience. Overall, seven out of ten stars.

Perfect
26 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 26 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- I had been waiting to see 'From Here to Eternity' for several weeks. Being a big old Hollywood movie fan, this was near the top of my list. It has a perfect cast; Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Frank Sinatra. So, I had high hopes. Might I say, I was not at all disappointed! It was everything I expected and then some. I'm so going to buy this movie. It's one of my all time new favorites. How this movie played out, though, surprised me. As expected I loved Sinatra's character. He was awesome! A fun loving character you wouldn't mind being around. Of course, most of the times, your favorite characters are killed off, which of course happened to Sinatra's character. That made me kind of upset, to be honest. I was also shocked that Montgomery Clift's character was killed off at the end. That was really sad since he was mistaken as a Japanese from far away and was therefore shot several times. Then, I also thought Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr would end up together. Wrong again. Yet, it doesn't matter. Movies that have surprise twists and turns make it all the more enjoyable. Absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it.

Dracula (1931)
4/10
Definitely a different time period
26 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 26 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- I would have never picked out this movie by myself. Yet, I was forced to watch it since it was my sister's night to pick a movie for the family to see. Being a big vampire-werewolf fan she picked this movie, which would be alright for me since I'm a huge old Hollywood fan and I enjoy watching old movies. Well, I enjoy watching old movies just not this one. To begin, I found it interesting that while the story takes place in the 1800s, the people all wore 1930s clothing, making them look out of place with the setting. Different idea (one that upset my sister might I add) but not terrible. Then we go to Dracula's castle. I have to say, I couldn't stand Dracula's accent. It was to apparent and it seemed like Bela Lugosi was trying to hard. Then again, actors back in the 1930s did overact most of the time. Renfield, the poor guy who visits Dracula, then walks through a spider web. Dracula says he has a small spider going around. Small!? That web was huge! Looks like the spider who made it could eat a small dog! Dracula then took Renfield to his room for the night, which Dracula gives a long and awkward speech about. He then takes Renfield's suitcases and goes to another room. The door opens by itself! If I was Renfield, I would be scared. What door opens by itself? By the end of the night, Renfield becomes Dracula's slave so it really doesn't matter. Dracula and Renfield go to England aboard a ship and Renfield is found and put into a mental institution. Not a good one might I add. Renfield escapes like ten times! A bunch of other weird things happen throughout the movie, might I add but I don't feel like adding them. However, I will mention the funniest part. When Mina is visited by the bat, you can see the string the fake bat is on! Come on! And it doesn't even move! What the heck? After watching the movie, I was relieved. But, here's the thing about old movies that I've learned. You can't judge it on the year you're watching it in, but on the year it came out. And I guess for the year it came out in, 1931, it was good. I mean, brilliant since I read afterwords that when people first saw it, some fainted in horror. I almost did too. But, in a different way.

Better then the first
26 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 26 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- When I saw the first 'Sherlock Holmes' I didn't like it. I found that the accents were so apparent that it was hard to understand what was coming out of anyone's mouth. Yet, at the urgency of my sister, I watched the second one. Much better. The accents were so apparent and you could understand the characters better. I seemed to like the characters more in this one too. While I was shocked Rachel McAdams' character was killed off right away in the beginning, I was happy with bringing Noomi Rapace in. I think she was very good and I look forward to seeing her in other films. I found Watson more enjoyable to, though I can't understand for the life of me why he wouldn't be more upset by the two faked deaths of Sherlock Holmes. I mean, Watson thought he was dead those two times and he didn't seem that upset. If that was my friend, I would be devastated. Which reminds me, I was kind of let down that Watson's dog wasn't in it more. I think he is so adorable! Then again I'm a dog person so I think about every dog is adorable. I also liked the villain more. He seemed like he was out to destroy the world. I also liked how the movie went to different cities instead of just staying in boring old London. Because, let's admit it, staying in just one city can sometimes be boring. Overall, this movie scored eight out of ten stars for me simply because while I really did enjoy it, it's not one of my favorites and it was just your average action movie. Not a lot of emotions, just guns blazing and the good guy coming up on top.

E. T. the friendly alien
19 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 18 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- E. T. is one of those movies that you regret not watching earlier. It took me fifteen years to finally watch this movie and I have to admit, I am short of mad at myself for not doing it earlier. Everyone knows the story. Little E. T. is left on planet Earth and soon meets Elliott, a boy who desperately needs a friend. Along with his older brother and younger sister (Drew Barrymore was so adorable as a child!) they embark on a quest to get E. T. home. If there's one thing I want to make clear in my review it's that E. T. is one of the sweetest and cutest aliens ever!! My favorite scene was by far when he went downstairs, while everyone was gone, and drank tons of beer that also affected poor Elliott. Then, the selfish humans came. Can't people just leave little E. T. alone? He didn't do anything wrong. I was almost near tears after it appeared E. T. was dead but what kind of story would that be if our innocent little alien friend died? Not a good one. E. T. rose again and made it back home. A sweet, sweet ending. So, in conclusion, I would suggest this movie to people. However, the reason why I only gave this movie a eight out of ten was because it was slightly predictable.

A Spectacular Show
16 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 15 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- After finishing the book 'Water for Elephants' I decided to watch the movie, thinking it may not be as spectacular as the book (though I admit the book was kind of disappointing. To my surprise, I actually really liked it. I liked how the movie began when Jacob went to the circus at the end of the book and began telling the story to the circus owner instead of doing flashbacks as Sara Gruen did in the novel. The only hard part about this movie was Rosie. That poor animal. How can any home just keep hitting and stabbing a poor animal? I for one was very happy when Rosie killed August in the end. That was very enjoyable since August deserved it. I thought Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz all did a fantastic job and were enjoyable to watch. One thing that did bother me about the movie adaption is that Walter wasn't in it as much as the book. Walter was my favorite character in the book so I was kind of disappointed that he wasn't in the movie as much. Overall a well done movie that deserved more recognition that it got. I didn't give this movie a ten because it is not one of my favorites.

Perfect Girl Movie
11 June 2012
Date: 10 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- Yes, this is definitely the perfect girl movie that provides laughs, sarcasm, and a touching story. The story focuses around Annie, a woman living in Milwaukee who discovers that her best friend, Lillian, is getting married. While Annie is happy for Lillian, she can't help but be sad too especially when she is introduced by Lillian's new friend, wedding planner expert Helen. Thus beginning a power struggle between Annie and Helen as they both try to impress Lillian and give her the wedding of her dreams. While I thought Kirsten Wiig did an amazing job playing Annie, I couldn't help but love Melissa McCarthy's portrayal as Megan, who makes a joke or gesture that makes you laugh every time she's on screen. But, was it Oscar worthy? No but it was still fantastic. Overall this movie is good but not fantastic.

What War Really Was
10 June 2012
Date: 9 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- This was my first time watching 'Saving Private Ryan' and it may be my last, for a good reason. The story is extremely sad but what makes it very sad is because it's true. Most of the things that occurred in the movie actually happened in World War Two. As a person interested in World War Two, I found this movie did an extremely good job depicting life after D-Day. The ending is extremely sad and it actually took my by surprise. I didn't expect that to happen. I expected some of it, but not all of it. In my opinion, this is one of Steven Spielberg's best films, along with 'Schindler's List'. Very moving and touching.

Fantastic
9 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 9 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- Whoa. That's about what sums up Johnny Cash's life. The things the man had to go through our mind blowing. After losing his brother Jack in a death that haunts him forever, Johnny joins the military and is stationed in Germany. For the next couple of years, Johnny climes the ladder of fame and hits every road block imaginable, from drugs to martial issues to struggling with his feelings for a woman he may not ever be able to have. Joaquin Phoenix was brilliant!! He has an amazing voice and was definitely on the top of his game when he did this movie. Which is why it bothers me that the Academy did not give him the Oscar! He deserved it! He also sounded exactly like Johnny Cash! Not to say Reese Witherspoon wasn't good, but if I had to pick between the two I would definitely give the Oscar to Phoenix. Overall this movie is amazing and definitely worth checking out.

Not very good
9 June 2012
Date: 8 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- It's safe to say that there really is no surprise that this latest Katherine Heigl bombed at the box office. Well it did not suck completely, it was not good either. I found the movie desperately trying to be funny, but just couldn't. I only laughed maybe once or twice, but definitely as not much as I wanted. The movie felt like it was going to last forever, when in fact it was barely an hour and a half. And I also didn't feel the connection to any of the characters. Overall this movie wasn't terrible, but not worth watching unless you just needed something to be playing in the background while you work.

Alright
3 June 2012
Date: 2 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- Dances with Wolves is considered a masterpiece, something you'll never grow tired of watching. I grew tired of watching it within the first hour and a half, which is bad since it's over a three hour movie. It seemed like it would never get going and was way too long! The ending was sad and left me feeling like it wasn't worth watching. I also didn't like how most of the Indians were portrayed. They seemed blood thirsty and most of their decisions were unjust. Just an average movie and not worth the three hours you have to watch. Believe me, there are movies that are just as long Dances with Wolves and ten times better.

The poor Showgirl
2 June 2012
Date: 1 June, 2012 -First Time Watch- Marilyn Monroe is perhaps one of the most famous people in the world and therefore it was only a matter of time till a movie was done about her depicting her life behind the scenes. Thankfully the film was done fantastically. Michelle Williams is fantastic as Marilyn Monroe and very enjoyable to watch. Williams made a good connection with the audience, showing Monroe's other side and how early on she was struggling with addiction to drugs (though one must think while watching that Monroe also might have had a disorder). Eddie Redmayne, who played Colin Clark, was also quite good in it. Though the one that out-shinned them all was Kenneth Branagh and his portrayal of Laurence Oliver. He was fantastic and humorous when he wasn't suppose to be. I really enjoyed watching him. Overall, this movie was excellent and definitely worth your time.

A real good movie
28 May 2012
Date: 27 May, 2012 -First Time Watch- Being a huge fan of book adaptations, there was no doubt in my mind I wanted to see how 'L. A. Confidential' was done. Much to my surprise, unlike most book-to-movie adaptations, 'L. A. Confidential' was fantastic. The characters came to life and were all enjoyable to watch. It's so shocking how much corruption was going on during this period of time. Personally, I loved Ed, played by Guy Pearce. He was great and it's a real shame that Guy Pearce didn't continue to pick movies like this. I think he could have been really big. This movie was fantastic and totally worth your time.

It's a remake!
27 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Date: 9 April, 2012 -First Time Watch- Let me first begin by stating that I have seen the 1982 version of 'The Thing'. That was excellent. So, why I found out that this movie was a prequel, I decided to give it a chance. Terrible mistake. Yes, it's a prequel but a bad one at that. Everything they did was copying what happened in the 1982 version. Like the blood test. Though, they didn't use blood in this version, they instead used metal found in the mouth of everyone. One question, what if they never had a filling? And what the heck happened to the chick at the end? Did she freeze to death? No, this movie sucked and so not worth it.
