Newspaper and Justice Dept. run amok- Should be a classic
5 June 2020
Newman in full stride. Fields is fine and able in her sweet, cute heyday- sans Burt. She's similar to Murphy's Romance but not in the same zip code as Norma Rae. Balaban is a riot and Brimley has, in my opinion, the best scene in the movie- though short. The rest of the cast does an admirable job which keeps things from stalling. One of my favorites, along with Newman's The Verdict.

woefully underrated movie

A terrific view of life in the late 60s early 70s northwest, before tech moved in. An early Alaska- if you wanted to survive you logged, farmed, fished or worked for Boeing or Kenworth. I had to watch this as a school assignment and was never sorry for it. There are some clumsy moments which I think a movie fan is able to overlook. Sarrazin was kind of an odd addition but wasn't that much of a distraction. I especially liked Jaeckel's role as the comedian. Newman was, well Newman. Pretty much good regardless, as was Fonda. Anyone in the northwest that hasn't seen this should give it look, though it may be hard to find.

Stephen! Really?! I hope you made Bank on this

Wow, not even close to the novels I read in my youth. I had so hoped this would be a hit as I did enjoy the book series. Ironically, an oasis seldom found after King discovered his "Word Processor".

I find it difficult to believe that anyone involved with this production read the same books I did. Idris and Matthew- shame. I hope these people never take on the Talisman.

Not for comic fans?

I found this to be solid entertainment in spite of other criticisms that it didn't follow original comic book plots. I don't care. I felt the special effects were top notch and the acting solid by all. If you hate Reeves, this wont change your mind, on the other hand- maybe. I especially liked Gabriel's appearance. Solid 7 in my book, maybe a bit more. But no way a 9 or 10.

a grim message to be sure

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure why all the negative reviews abound. Maybe there weren't enough gas bombs going off. While not a professional reviewer, I thought the cast did admirable jobs with their roles, limited or otherwise. Again, while it is not a Schwarzenegger or Stallone actioner, it's more subtle, mostly, asking the viewer to trade places with any or all of the characters in a What If scenario.

I felt the cast did a fine job with the rolls they were given, though Pitt may have been under-used. I think Scott did a great job putting the viewer in touch with what it means to get into an illicit, though lucrative, business and dealing with the mother of all stock market crashes while the characters themselves were in for a bit of a moment.

In spite of what other, more esoteric reviewers feel, this piece is far worthier than a bucket of bad popcorn.
