Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)
STUNNING DOCUMENTARY
If reading reviews, be careful, I know many others have been careful not to reveal much which is incredibly important. The less you know going into this, the better. I will however discuss the filmmaking and the emotional impact. The director uses very unusual techniques which really work, it zips along at great pace and swallows the viewer in immediately. The real time progression of the timeline is what really gives the gravitas to this film. I experienced every strong emotion whilst watching this ranging from anger, sadness, laughter and hope. It truly is one of the most powerful true life docs I have ever seen, reviewing this many years after it was made, I am so glad I finally found it, but equally glad I knew absolutely nothing about it. Get comfortable as it will make you feel very uncomfortable in places but the human spirit and love are the true victors of this film. Watch it.
The League of Gentlemen (1999)
What's all this, we'll have no shouting here!
Late review yes, typical me, I discovered Shearsmith and Pemberton in reverse order, discovering them first late in the run of Inside No 9 which I would give 12 stars if I could. Upon devouring that entire series I then moved on to Psychoville, That piggy is sniffing around Tealeaf and finally I arrived at LoG. Having gotten used to the unique craziness of the characters played by these two geniuses and now with the wonderful addition of Gatiss it is pure and utter madness. I have just completed series 2 and about to start series 3, had to pop on here to give it a quick 10 stars and hope and pray the two lads produce something new on any platform soon.
If you like your fare conventional, you will hate this, if however you're a bit mad, like I am and can appreciate British humour at it's most unique, then this series will be right up your street, full of magical things but a warning, only for local people....
Palm Springs (2020)
Extremely Entertaining
I would actually advise anyone to not read too much about this film and just go in. A little bit of everything on show, rom-com, science fiction, drama the works. If you want a movie that doesn't tax the mind too much, very likeable characters, original script and just great fun, then this is it. Highly recommended.
James May: Our Man in... (2020)
Really Good and Very Educational
Don't often review here but said I'd jump in on this one, I'm only half way through the series but I really am enjoying it. I've always loved James May and his style of doing shows and he brings all that and more to this, his knowledge of Japanese culture and language is wonderful. The guide he has in Tokyo is an absolute scream and would love to see him with a show of his own.
Dept. of Reincarnation (2018)
Hilarious and well made
Great acting, well shot, interesting story, not sure of the cats lol, very strong direction and possibly the best credit I've ever seen, watch out for that at the end. Great to see a couple of people create an original short (very short). It is hard to pack in a complete story in only 3 minutes but it is done to full whack here. Bravo the makers, the world needs more of this.
Joker (2019)
HEATH LEDGER IS SMILING WIDER THAT THE JOKER
What an incredible experience I had on Saturday to see this film starring the incredible Joachim Phoenix. I have been stunned somewhat until now, to discuss what happened for those 2 hours in a darkened room.
This movie has broken every mold there was, nothing I saw, had I ever seen before. Firstly, the acting, Phoenix is just other worldly, the most beautiful, stunning piece of acting I have ever witnessed! If he does not clean up in the awards ceremonies I will finally lose all faith in them. Ably supported by a great cast of character actors, even De Niro puts in a wonderful cameo, but this is all about Arthur Fleck and his decent into madness.
For a film to show a graphically violent murder and the whole theater to be belly laughing 10 seconds later, is saying something about the power of this movie. I felt so many emotions during the story and was blown away by the camera angles, the use of lighting and focus etc, like I say, everything I saw was new. I am not familiar with the director but I will become so, if he doesn't clean the awards too, the ceremonies can go to hell.
I will need to see it again, it will be a movie like 2001 for me, one I will keep dipping back into to find more.
This film will not be attractive to anyone under 30 tho.
It's a character study, a masterclass in film-making and acting, not much action and stuff til the end.
Most of all, I felt great empathy and pain for Arthur.
you Bruce Wayne and your ilk.
