The Iron Claw (2023)

Well that was depressing...
12 May 2024
This was a tragic tale told in a ho-hum way. Nothing about the movie was all that engaging. I mean, it is a well-made moving with quality acting, but the way the story is told is just matter of fact. I didn't really feel any emotion even though some really awful things were happening within this family. And I have just learned from reading other reviews that there was a sixth son in this family who also met a tragic end that was left out of the movie. It made me wonder, who in the world looked at the story of this family and thought, hey, I think this would make for a really entertaining movie?

And the Academy Award for monotone acting goes to ...
5 April 2024
I recorded this movie to my dvr a long time ago. I finally watched it tonight. I think I avoided it for so long simply because I didn't like the title. But I kept it because it has Nicole Kidman in it. If a movie has Nicole Kidman in it, I will eventually watch it. Other than the title and Nicole, though, I knew nothing about the story before I started watching. I now know that the movie was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who also directed The Lobster. I remember liking The Lobster when I saw it, but unfortunately I cannot say the same for this movie. It was hard for me to accept how everyone in the family acted so strangely because the story is set within such a normal world. Therefore it is hard to understand why someone in the position of these parents wouldn't go to the police for help. What is it about this Martin kid that allows him to make these children ill in a way that is undetectable to doctors? If he's doing it in some metaphysical or spiritual way, then there should have been some backstory on Martin to explain how he has this power. In fact, there is just so much left unexplained that it makes it hard to care about anyone or anything in the story. I watched the movie until its end to find out what happened, but I found the ending very unsatisfying as well. All in all, if you're reading this before watching, I'd say avoid this movie unless you are really into weird, disturbing movies.

Excellent movie!
19 February 2024
I don't really know if I can reach the required number of characters for this review. All I can really think to say is that this is an excellent movie. It is very well-written, directed, and acted. It is short and succinct. It is heart-warming but doesn't go out of its way to be a tear-jerker, and it shows humanity at its best. I can see how a viewer might be disappointed if they came to this movie expecting a sci-fi thriller about an alien. However, if that is the case for you, please don't take it out on the movie by leaving a bad review. Just remember the old cliche: Don't judge a book ... or movie ... by its cover.

I hope they spend more on the lighting budget for the sequel.
24 July 2023
This movie isn't really all that good to begin with, but it's made even worse by the fact that the screen is so dark throughout the whole movie that you can't really tell what the heck is going on. Even scenes that take place in daylight somehow appear dark. As far as the story goes, it has an interesting premise, but it is very poorly developed. Who are these people, and why are they doing what they're doing? There are only vague references to what is happening, but some further explanation would have been nice. The final scene suggests there will be a sequel, so perhaps my questions will be answered then. I just hope they spend more money on the lighting budget for the next one.

Terrible movie, but hey, it the Foo Fighters!
21 February 2023
Well, this wasn't much of a movie, but it was fun to watch the Foo Fighters. Also, it was bittersweet to see the late Taylor Hawkins having fun with his bandmates. With each gory death that happened, I kept thinking it would have been cool if they had Quentin Tarantino do a rewrite on the script and direct the movie. He might have been able to make a little more sense out of the story and get a little better acting performances out of the band. But with that said, I think they all did a pretty good job considering that they are rock stars, not actors. I am glad this movie exists and I think they did a good job with it for what it was.

A pretty good con movie.
18 February 2023
Usually when a movie doesn't have a linear timeline I get distracted trying to figure out how everything fits together. However, I felt like this screenplay was very well crafted. Instead of being distracting, the device of telling the story from individual character's perspective and jumping around in time seemed to let the story unfold in a very natural way. Perhaps I'm not as well-versed in con movies as some other reviewers here, but I got so involved in the story that I honestly didn't see the final twist coming, and was very satisfied with how the movie ended. Finally, I felt the movie was very well acted, and I thought Julianne Moore did a particularly good job in her role. This movie is definitely worth a watch.

Garbage.
21 December 2022
I don't know if I can get to the required six hundred characters in this review. There isn't much to say about this movie other than that it is garbage. I realize that Marilyn Monroe probably struggled with personal demons in her life, but for her to be portrayed the way she is in this film is just wrong. I understand that this is a fictionalized account of her life, but it is still wrong. It is an assault on her character, and does a disservice to her legacy. I am still short of the required characters for this review, so I will end with a simple recommendation. Do not bother watching this film.

The cinematography is amazing, but the story is miserable.
14 November 2022
This is a story about the most horrible human beings ever to walk the earth. If this even comes close to being an accurate representation of what it was like to live in that time and place, then I don't understand why everyone didn't just commit suicide. How could they live with themselves being so violent, hateful, mean, and untrustworthy? It's just a miserable tale about miserable people that is too long and drawn out. The dialogue is terrible, and is spoken without emotion in four or five word phrases with intolerable pauses in between. The only reason I give it five out of ten stars is because it was beautifully filmed, and because I love Emily Blunt. Those are the only two reasons to watch.

Ridiculous, but fun ... after the first 20 minutes, that is.
4 September 2022
Fast forward the first 20 minutes, and then it turns into a fun 60 minute movie. All you need to know from the first 20 minutes is that the movie starts with Allison Williams living on Mauritius. She has a boyfriend, but she is leaving him to take a job in London. A year later she returns to Mauritius for a friend's wedding. She sees her ex and hooks up with him. That causes her to miss a ferry to another island the next morning with the wedding party. To catch up with them she catches a plane ride with a pilot friend of hers, and lo and behold her ex just happens to be the other passenger on the plane. Then the fun begins. There are a lot of rediculous things that happen on the flight, but somehow it is fun to watch. To me, the movie is more of a comedy than a drama. It kept me laughing and commenting on the action as it went along. I recommend it if you're just looking for a quick, fun movie to watch.

How It Ends (2021)

Pleasantly surprised.
28 July 2022
I read some unflattering reviews on here before I watched this movie, and so my expectations were low going in. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and I feel those who trashed it were a bit harsh. The movie has a great pace to it. It's a collection of short scenes that don't linger too long. If you don't care for one scene, don't worry, another one is coming right up. I particularly liked the scenes with Sharon Van Etten, Olivia Wilde, Lamorne Morris, and Helen Hunt. There were some funny jokes along the way, as well as some light emotional stuff. All in all in was an enjoyable movie. I thought the younger-self construct was very interesting, and the chemistry between Zoe Lister-Jones and Cailee Spaeny was excellent. Also, since I live in Los Angeles, I really enjoyed seeing the street signs and keeping track of where each scene was filmed. From a reality standpoint, though, there is no way they could have gotten to all those places on foot in one day. Ha ha! The other good thing about this movie is that it's a great document of how empty the streets were during the pandemic. In my imagination, on the last day of human life on earth the streets of Los Angeles would be filled with people going nuts. But the fact that the streets were so empty in the movie added sort of a calm eeriness, and a sense of acceptance of the impending doom. It's nice to think that could actually be ... how it ends.

Bad movie with bad sound mixing.
22 July 2021
Yes, this movie is as bad as all the 1-star reviews say. Not only are the story, writing, and characters all bad, but the sound mixing is very uneven. At some points you have to crank up the volume to hear quiet dialogue that is being drowned out by background noise and music. Then characters start screaming and you have to lower the volume. But in the end, it just doesn't even matter because the movie is just so terrible.

Did anyone involved in this movie actually think they were making something worthwhile? There is nothing funny about it. There is nothing entertaining about. There is nothing interesting about it. Don't bother!

The only reason I watched this movie is because Anna Kendrick is in it. She's awesome. Unfortunately, this movie is terrible.

I think it's not a very good movie.
20 April 2021
I realize that this is an "art" movie, and probably has meaning deeper than my mind can comprehend. However, I believe that for any movie to be considered good it must have one basic element. It must give the viewer some reason ... ANY reason ... to care about what is happening on the screen. In my opinion, this movie does not do that.

This movie is excellent.
25 March 2021
How did this movie not get Oscar nominated for best movie, best lead actor and actress, best director, and best screenplay? This movie is well-written, tells a simple but interesting story, is edited expertly to keep the story moving at the perfect pace, has excellent acting performances, is directed masterfully, and is beautifully filmed. What more can you ask for in a movie?

This movie is terrible.
23 March 2021
I'm not even really sure where to start. I can only think of random phrases: cartoon-like characters; deadpan, emotionless acting; unnatural dialogue and interactions between characters; ridiculous storyline. Basically it's a waste of about two and half hours. The only thing that kept me watching until the end was to find out what happened to The Goldfinch painting, but even that was unsatisfying because the movie only tells you what happened instead of showing you.

Boring.

So, let me get this straight. Mohammed Ali wins the heavyweight championship of the world, and celebrates by spending the night in a dumpy Miami hotel room discussing race with Malcolm X, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke? C'mon man.

Good idea, but dull storytelling.
2 March 2021
My biggest concern about this film is that, in the current hyper-polarized political climate in which right-wing conspiracy theorists can get away with storming the Capitol in an attempt to overthrow the government, some racist white-supremacy wingnuts might watch this movie and try to recreate it. As for the movie itself, there were too many slow panning shots with nothing happening. The story unfolded at too slow a pace. I wish the movie had been directed by Quentin Tarantino. I bet the climactic scene with the sword, ax, and burning shed would have been much more satisfying.

Give this movie a chance.
26 February 2021
An earlier review said something to the effect that if you give this movie a 10 it's probably the first movie you've ever seen. Well I didn't quite give it a 10, but I do rate it very highly. And it's not the first movie I've ever seen. In fact I've seen many movies in my life, and I've come to realize that there are many different types of movies. This is solely a character study movie. You have to go into it with different expectations than you would an action movie, a comedy, or a crime drama. Julia Garner's character, Jane, is the sole focus of this movie. You are watching how she handles a day of work at a job about which she is deeply conflicted. And for those reviewers who say this movie has no plot, I don't think you really thought much about what you were watching. This wasn't just any day of work for Jane. The plot of the movie is that this is the day Jane decides whether she wanted her job enough to put up with her creep of a boss. Julia Garner's performance was subtle and restrained, yet very powerful, as she struggles with her decision.

Beautiful, but sad. Depressing, yet uplifting. Emotional, but detached. Slow and engrossing. Quite simply, a masterpiece.

Great movie!
6 February 2021
I can see why some may not like it. This is definitely a character and dialogue driven movie, but I found the telling of the story to be engrossing. Just enough information was revealed in each scene to keep me watching and wanting to know more. The only distraction for me was there did seem to be some stammering by the actors in some scenes like they were trying to remember their lines or something, but then I discovered later that a lot of the dialogue was improvised. In a way, I think that improvisation, along with the fact that most of the movie was filmed aboard the Queen Mary 2 during an actual crossing of the Atlantic, made the film feel very real. Plus, in my opinion, Meryl Streep is the greatest actor of all time. Any movie she is in will automatically be good.

Somewhat disappointing.
30 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie plays like a whodunnit, but then at the end you realize it was really a character study of a couple obsessed detectives. I kept waiting for the clever twist that would reveal the identity of the serial killer, but by the end the only killers that are revealed are the two detectives themselves. Along the way there are distractions such as sloppy edits, faulty logic, and Jared Leto's facial prosthetic that really detract from the film. Also, I think it was a mistake to say it was October 1990 at the beginning of the first scene. The rest of the movie feels like it was present day. And with Denzel's gray hair and coming from his current job in Kern County to return to his old stomping grounds in LA and revisiting his past case, I spent most of the movie thinking that first scene was a flashback to several years ago. So then I was very confused when that girl from the first scene shows up at the police station when they have taken Jared Leto into custody, and she is the same age as in the first scene. I don't know, bottom line, it wasn't a terrible movie, but it had a lot of problems.

Becky Nothing
12 December 2020
I can't add too much to the reviews that are already here. The first 80 minutes of the film are difficult to get through, then it becomes bearable after that. The sound is terrible. Much of the dialogue is unintelligible, and the score is horrible. I think the fatal flaw of the movie, though, is that it starts with Becky at rock bottom and keeps her there for the first 80 minutes of the film. Half of that time should have been used for scenes to establish "Something She" as a successful and popular band. That way I would have at least cared that Becky's behavior was ruining the band. Instead I just found myself wondering why anyone would spend five minutes with this person. Also, I didn't even realize that drugs were the cause of Becky's wretched behavior until she says she is one year sober later in the film. Her drug use wasn't well-established in the beginning. I just thought she was a crazy egomaniac in the midst of a nervous breakdown.
