Netflix Standout
25 March 2022
I have a hard time finding Netflix original movies that I enjoy. They either have a pacing or structure problem that makes them basically unwatchable for me.

I watched The Adam Project hoping that wouldn't be true and scored big. Disclosure, I like Ryan Reynolds' brand of humor, and it was quite evident here.

It's entertaining from start to finish, has all the love stories (father-son, romantic, loving one's self), fighting, explosions, time travel worldbuilding that didn't make me mad, and ***SPOILER*** (sort of but not really) a happy ending that included some very nice wind down/wrap up with the characters.

Was it epic? Deeply moving? Nah. But it was absolutely entertaining, warm, funny, and good enough I watched it twice. (Hence my 10 rating; 10s are movies I re-watch). It's exactly the kind of movie I wish Netflix would make more of.

HARD pass: Maybe learn the genre, Netflix
13 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
No comment on the acting or scene-setting or even the general direction of the plot but (SPOILER AHEAD) I will comment on the single element I require in any murder mystery or criminal procedural: justice. That's a requirement of the genre, generally speaking. Because the genre is so clear in that regard, it's one of the few I still watch on TV. Every murder mystery or criminal procedural should have a satisfying end. But this is Netflix and their series have a certain ebb and flow and ebb and more flow - basically, many of their series ruin story structure to such a degree that I walk away dissatisfied. So - hard pass on this one. They were trying to hook for the next season, but all they did was piss me off. I will not be watching more, and I'll continue to avoid Netflix series with their messed up structure and inability to provide a truly cathartic full story arc - even in the mystery/crim procedural genres. Gee thanks, Netflix.

Adorably Heart-Warming
25 May 2017
I'd forgotten how much I adored Marc Blucas. (I'm familiar with him from his days on Buffy.) He plays a great sweet romance lead. He comes across as the kind of guy you love to love =) This was an enjoyable, heart-warming film in a cozy, small-town setting with solid acting. I'd watch more like this is a heartbeat. I'd love to see him in a Hallmark cozy mystery as a romantic lead. One can hope...

Heads up, Inspirational Film
17 May 2017
I bought it bc it's billed as a romcom, but it has some pretty strong inspirational overtones that are not mentioned in the marketing materials. I like a few of the actors, but the dialogue was sketchy at times. I would have probably given this the typical 6 of 10 for entertaining but not awesome quality, but I really don't like inspirational films - which is why I don't buy them. So I'm more than a little peeved right now at what I'd consider deceptive marketing.

Sad
19 March 2015
I'm sad. There are some great actors in this show, but if I didn't know them from other works I'd rate the acting as terrible. The writing is so incredibly bad that it makes even Patricia Arquette (who is usually lovely) look less than stellar. Poor dialog, plots that aren't fully fleshed out, and inaccuracies abound. I'm bummed. I tried 3 episodes, but I don't like the characters, the stories are sufficiently flawed to detract from my enjoyment, and I'm just done. I tend to rate pretty generously and that's reflected in my 5 star review. I must have seen some glimmer of possibility because I came back 2 more times. But that's all you're getting from me CSI: Cyber.
