Mazes and Monsters (1982)
watch only for Tom Hanks
Only worth watching out of interest in seeing Tom Hanks before he exploded into being a superb and super famous actor. It doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it about "mazes and monsters" for fans of the game? Is it about the evils of playing such games? Is it about a disturbed teenager's decent into schizophrenia due to the disappearance of his brother? IF it had tried to be any one of these, it could have been good. It tries to be them all and therefore fails at all of them. At one point, we have a character say that he wants to "win" and mazes and monsters. Anyone with any knowledge of the real world game of which mazes and monsters is an expy, will know that winning is not the point at all.
Air (2015)
tiny cast, big movie
I had absolutely no idea what to expect out of this, I've seen both stars in other things and really enjoyed their work, Djimon Hounsou and Norman Reedus were thoroughly brilliant. Excellent choices by the casting director. It was tense and thoughtful throughout and kept me thinking all the way through about how it would end. I thoroughly recommend it.
The Colony (2013)
watch the first half
SPOILERS! The first half was very enjoyable. Laurence Fishburne's character's nobleness set against Bill Paxton's character's almost cartoony evil was very promising and well acted by both. A great plot point was introduced where the climate change could be reversed. Then at almost precisely the 50% mark, it turned into what was essentially a zombie film. Nothing was made of Fishburne's and Paxton's characters' animosity, the lead "feral" survived narm levels of violence without any ill effects, people with guns faced up against zombies and waited forever to pull the trigger. It was frustrating to watch. Watch the first half, you've got an 8* movie right there. The second half is 3* at best.
Moana (2016)
The rock gives a solid performance
Apologies for this, but "it doesn't matter" what you previously thought of Dwayne Johnson's acting talents (for the record, I always found his work entertaining), this one blows it all away. Visually, this film is stunning. Beautiful even. The animation of things like hair and water are simply astounding. Music is great, (I've got the soundtrack already) and the story is compelling. Thoroughly recommended.
The Magnificent Seven (2016)
brilliant retelling of an old favourite
I have always loved this story in all its numerous guises. The music brought a nostalgic smile to my face with its updating of the soundtrack from the 1961 version. The acting was good all round and I have to say I couldn't choose a favourite from all the people involved. I even loved the addition of a more visceral motive for helping the town given to the Yul Bryner/Denzel Washington character than was there in previous versions.
Trolls (2016)
loved it
I took my 4 year old to the cinema to watch this. We laughed, we cried, we sang along, we bought the DVD and have watched it several times a day since. I'm still not bored of watching it. Christine Baranski is brilliant and worth watching it alone for. The rest of the cast is brilliant too. The music selection complements the action very well, and we had to get the soundtrack the moment we got home.
