How to Be (2008)
How To Be (character Art)
Existential angst takes a quirky turn in this hilariously funny story about a young man's search for himself. Poor Art, alone in himself he is trying his best to "do the right thing", but what exactly that means to him is unclear. His only goal appears to ascribe a wish to be a writer/musician, but his talent seems not to bear toward his goal.
Art's lack of direction is further confused by his enlistment of a self-help guru whose help is complicated by his own disappointed life experiences. Lacking a clear sense of direction from family, friends and a supposed professional, his only recourse seems to be to rely on his innate feelings about what he wants out of life.
Art, as portrayed by Robert Pattinson, is at times, funny, whinny, self-absorbed, confused, and as retrospectively ridiculous as all of us can be at that age. Mr. Pattinson's portrayal is hilariously funny and almost campy and as always, he makes the movie even more watchable.
Remember Me (2010)
Remember Me (character Tyler Hawkins)
Despite a very privileged life and a mother whose love is always available, young Tyler Hawkins is consumed by the darker side of his family life. Parental divorce, a distant father consumed by business, bullies who constantly and brutally plague his little sister, and a critical and tragic loss in his family leave Tyler's sensitive nature prone to focus on the negative aspects of his life. Very misguided and thoughtless actions almost result in another loss to him of a beautiful young woman with whom he falls in love.
The character's angst is beautifully portrayed by Robert Pattinson in the role of Tyler Hawkins and his range of emotion, from bored ennui to consuming rage against a distant father, to a finally realized reconsideration of his thoughts about his life, is poignant and thoughtful.
As everything appears to fall into place, circumstances completely outside of his control leave a last bitter tragedy in his young life.
The Haunted Airman (2006)
The Haunted Airman (character Toby Jugg)
The young British airman, Lieutenant Toby Jugg, has been critically injured in his last raid over Nazi-held territory during World War II, and is transferred out of war-ravaged London to a remote psychiatric hospital for wounded soldiers.
As played by a very young Robert Pattinson, his psychically wounded spirit is captured with amazing clarity. The gloomy aura of the hospital is further enhanced by his increasing mistrust of the man responsible for his supposed return to health, and his increasing unease with his own helpless situation.
As his sanity spirals out of control, his despair and feelings of hopelessness increase to unfold in horrifying results.
