Mind numbingly depressing
25 January 2021
First of all, this isn't a bad film - but it's not necessarily a good one.

I get what they were trying to achieve with the story and characters but it missed the mark for me. The acting is okay and production is reasonable but neither elevate the story.

The film is perhaps a bit slow in pacing and by the hour mark I was begging for the end. I managed to finish the film without giving up but was left feeling very depressed and like I had wasted hours of my life... but maybe that was the point - in a breakup you are left feeling depressed and that it was all a waste of time?! Not sure the film was THAT clever though.

Rent it and see for yourself.

Expected so much but got very little
27 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Monsoon is nicely made and opens the viewer up to a slice of modern Vietnam but ultimately the film offers very little.

The film concludes with no clear conclusion on what he decided to do with his parents ashes. There was no clear resolution about the main character's mixed feelings about being back. Presumably he stays with the guy he briefly gets to know but even that relationship felt flat and with little to no substance beyond a physical one.

The majority of characters seemed rather glum and lifeless - usually wearing a frown or blank expression making their intentions and emotions hard to read.

In the end this isn't really a gay film, nor a film about family and resolution and not even a film about journey.

I wish I knew what the idea was meant to be behind this film - the director's other film, Lilting, is wonderful and so beautifully written, acted and produced. This was a let down for me.

Am I missing something?
6 August 2020
I've tried to want to like this film as seems many do but the acting is terrible from two guys. It feels so wooden and false that I just can't buy into the characters.

Don't get me wrong, I've seen MANY worse gay films but this is middle of the pack.

If you want some really good gay films, look outside of the US/English language - there are many great ones from Argentina, Spain and Germany.

US focused - where was Beautiful Thing?
27 June 2020
This list is so US focused - how could you exclude Beautiful Thing?!!! It's like one of, if not the, greatest gay films ever!

You also missed Shelter which was really good too and US film.

'Celebrity' is a bit of a stretch
16 May 2020
Only knew one of the 'celebs' from their brief spell on Glee. The third episode was the only good one and didn't really enjoy the female episodes as didn't feel there was much of a transformation.

Episodes are really long and a drag (not the good kind). It's as bad and pointless as the xmas special and as fixed as All Stars.

It has issues!
7 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film has some good actors, location is gorgeous and (briefly) touches on some important issues and viewpoints...

However, it is let down by a several issues.

The pacing is really slow and the run time is far longer than it needed to be, it could easily be twenty minutes shorter and still tell the same story (perhaps better).

The story is very generic and you can see pretty much everything coming. I liked the inclusion of the refugee storyline but it could have been used better.

They become friends very quickly and then lovers - they somehow just know that each other is gay which is a little unrealistic. The romantic scenes were a little stretched out too which, whilst helping to develop the lust and emotional development, felt tidious and there to pad the runtime.

There is also issues with the editing and quality - one shot of the lake is the same shot mashed together with the water suddenely flowing backwards!! Another scene clearly shows the boom mic and another early on shows the mic taped to the actors chest below his shirt. These could easily have been spotted and rectified and therefore were an unwelcome distraction pulling me out of the story.

Overall, it's a nice film and worth a watch but it isn't anything new or groundbreaking. Try Gods Own Country if you want something top drawer.

Basically just an advert
5 January 2019
Plug plug plug - lets plug every disney property and pay for it with endless product placement and coat it in sugar and colours so kids and parents buy this as a 'film'.

A very lame sequel with a flimsy, thin-layered 'story' centred around brand promotions.

Good doc, terrible sound mixing
27 July 2018
Whomever did the sound on this did a woeful job - many points you can barely hear the commentator, the talking heads are far louder than the commentary track and some of the backgroud music is too loud or completely out of place and distracting.

A good documentary on a great topic let down by poor sound mixing!

Stereotypical unrealistic nonsense
3 November 2016
I watched this film probably around a year ago and haven't had the desire to watch it again despite it being set in Nottingham (where I work).

The problem I have with so many gay films or portrayal of gay characters is the colour-by-numbers approach. The guys are always pretty good looking, fairly well off, drug taking, club hopping and sexually over- active.

This may be the reality for some gay men but it isn't for everyone. The amount of drinking, drugs, sex and clubbing in films like this is completely unrealistic - especially to those who don't live in big cities, frequent gay bars or sleep about.

Maybe a writer/director could attempt to create something with a sense of grounding, hard-faced reality and where the characters aren't one-dimensional, vapid and shallow or where the "plot" goes beyond their own wet dreams.

Last night I watched '4th Man Out' and whilst it still is a by-the-numbers sort of film, at least the main character felt real and relatable. He wasn't a druggie, he wasn't a gay clubber, he wasn't camp or a tart - he was a mechanic with straight male friends who enjoyed sports and just wanted to meet someone.

This film has a long way to go to come even 1% close to the likes of Shelter or Beautiful Thing.
