Marriage (2022)
Don't be so quick to judge
I'm not sure why people were quick to rate this so low but I found it to be worthy of more. People saying it's boring and banal but that's what some marriages look like after nearly 30 years. They're past the point of swinging from the ceiling and fireworks. They're settled into a groove where sometimes words aren't needed. Both on the 'wrong side of 40' Emma is trying her best to impress her boss who is a nasty piece of work and Ian has been made redundant and finds it difficult to fill his time, desperately trying to engage others in conversation just so he doesn't feel so invisible. They're trying to navigate through life whilst dealing with the death of a child, an adoptive daughter who's in an abusive relationship and Emma's father who doesn't have a nice thing to say but commands her time and attention. Yes it all sounds pretty grim but it's beautiful and sensitive and it's true. Marriage is called a life sentence but it doesn't mean it has to be a punishment.
Nighty Night (2004)
I just didn't get it
I've watched this over two evenings and I really wish I hadn't bothered. IT. IS. AWFUL. I don't get why people raved over it because it's unfunny and vulgar. I kept saying just one more episode, it might get better - it didn't. Julia Davis plays an obnoxious narcissistic sociopath and they're her redeeming qualities, it's asking a lot of the audience to believe that she would get away with such vile behaviour and as a fan of Rebecca Front and Angus Deayton I found their acting extremely painful to watch. I only wish I'd said Nighty Night after the first episode.
The Stranger (2020)
Bravo Harlen! Bravo!
One of the best limited series I have watched in ages. Exciting premise, brilliant cast and plenty of oh my God and edge of your seat moments. I rationed myself to four episodes each yesterday and today but you could quite easily get lost in the whole eight in one sitting. Brilliant ensemble cast both young and older. I loved every single minute of it. After scoring a hit with "Safe" (also a Netflix original) and this he's currently two for two and I cannot wait for what they have in store for us next. Brilliant viewing and for me a worthy 9/10
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
A Masterclass
I have just experienced what could possibly be the best GoT episode EVER. A masterclass in story writing, production and acting. It's going to take a long long time to get over what I've just watched . As perfect as television gets.
