Vor (1997)
One of my all time favorites...
I can't say that I'm a big fan of Russian movies, but there are some that I really do love - this is one of them. The fact why I do love these "some" movies is this "russian-only" bitterness and rough reality that these movies contain. I really did like all the characters in the "Vor" - each one of them represented some angle of human nature - trust and dependence as opposites to hate and insensibility - qualities that we all do have, but somehow manage to pretend that we don't. Also this movie has a really sentimental atmosphere, that makes you think about different things in your life and maybe even rearrange your system of values. As for me - I thought about love and the fact that love doesn't arise from our actions or qualities...and so it does not vanish according to them. There is such love that is between man and a woman as well as between a child and his parent - love that just IS, love that is beautiful in it's unconditionality. I really do recommend this movie to everyone who thinks that he/she can appreciate quality entertainment.
5x2 (2004)
Simple and... just beautiful
The plot of this movie itself is very ordinary and simple...no love triangles, no memory loss or anything...:) Two people fall in love, fall out of it (or not?...who cares...), make love, cheat, divorce - that's it. So what's so special about this movie? I must say it's that special mood that filled me after watching it. As many movies, this one postulates that life's not so great after all - people may be mean, bad things happen, everything good ends one day, but even so it's worth living and to be more specific - it's worth to love. Fact, that we see events developing backwards highlights this idea. At the end of the movie no one actually remembers the beginning (divorce) - audience is just so moved by by this beautiful, banal love story...and I must say that it should be this way always. Who cares, that love won't last forever - what's more important, is that it exists!
Me Without You (2001)
Incredibly realistic...
The story is about these two young women, who have been "friends" all of their lives. There were boys, jealousy, love and hate...and still it's all about these two girls - Holly and Marina. Just the truth without any hyperbolas and unnecessary sweetness. This movie was so close to me that all of the time I watched it I had goose bumps. The central idea of this movie has been following me since I was 12...It's unbelievable how precisely director has described my (as well as any other human being's) thoughts, emotions...There are these people in our lives that just won't ever go. It's not love and it's not friendship either and it's not that we really want them to leave (?)...it is some kind of bond between people...as the Marina says "There's no me without you". Watching this movie I realized how weird is this fact - you can hate, despise one people so much....and still there is something that holds you together...and I guess there is no point to resist, otherwise there will be no you :) - and that's frightful isn't it?

DON'T THINK SO MUCH - just watch it!
I must say that this is one really enlightening film. I saw it on TV one evening(actually I even didn't plan to watch it)and I'm really glad that I didn't have anything better to do at that time. Some time ago I saw Jean-Pierre Jeunets film "Amelie" - well this was not quite so good, but I must say pretty similar. This movie talks about womens mentality and oddities with such an irony. For a great while I laughed, but then I realized (it was kind a tragic revelation) that actually it is so so true. I really don't want to tell anything about the plot, because it's too unique, but I'm convinced that every woman should see this film, just to realize how stupid we can sometimes act...just because we think that's the right think to do. One thing I learned - DON'T THINK SO MUCH! :)
