Great story - feel good movie with great characters and acting.
I loved this movie! I rented it one night on the fly not knowing the gem that I had rented, only knowing what great actors were in it. I was really surprised at how it made me feel.
I really like the story a lot and I think Campbell did a great way of capturing everything perfectly on film. I haven't seen a movie that made me feel the way this movie did for sometime. I didn't think they made movies like this anymore. I'm glad someone did.
I thought Joan Allen and Sam Elliot were cast perfectly in this movie. I found myself being lost in the story and the lives of this family and this stranger from the IRS.
I think what attracted me to this movie more than anything was the fact that this stranger came into their lives needing to be rescued and in the process ended up helping rescue the family. I wish I had seen the play because I think this would have been great to see on stage.
Also, you can't go wrong with a movie that involves someone getting lost in an enchanting place like New Mexico. I've found myself lost in places like that many times and can relate. You sometimes just want to drop everything like this man did and go somewhere else. Like Jude Cole's song, "Start the Car" sometimes you just want to drop everything and start the car and get out of the rat race and live a simple life like these people lived. The whole movie I was thinking how this family was lucky.

Good Movie
This was a great movie. I've always thought it was. Like a lot of people have mentioned it's a great skier's movie. I'll watch it a couple of times over the summer along with all of the other ski movies that I either have, i.e. Hot Dog, Warren Miller, etc... It makes one want to get up and change jobs and lifestyle and keeps my powder fever under control until winter arrives again.
I don't agree with some users comments on the soundtrack though. I think the songs on the soundtrack fit the movie very well. In fact I wish the soundtrack was available because I like the songs in this movie, especially, 'Start the Car' by Jude Cole, 'The Driver' by Terry Reid, and 'Best inside you' by David Baerwald.
It is a sad movie with a similar plot as Top Gun in some respects, but I think the strong friendship of TJ and Dexter separates this movie from the testosterone driven Top Gun(which I think is also a great movie). Not to mention this is one of the few ski movies of the 80s/90s that was not a comedy.
