A Walk in the Woods (2015)
Do not even consider hiking the AT based solely on this movie
Many people have failed on the AT because they were unprepared - physically and logistically. This is a fairytale look at what hiking the AT is. Everybody nice and clean, carrying items that are not needed, not carrying items that are needed, not dressing appropriately. The obvious goofs - like running into a grizzly bear (which are not found anywhere on the AT) - should be a tipoff that this is not a serious film about hiking the AT (or any long distance hike), but rather a character driven movie about two guys.
Anyone considering hiking the AT should first get on hiker websites, particularly the Appalachian Trail Conservancy located in Harpers Ferry, WV.
Criminal Minds: What Doesn't Kill Us (2023)
Pick up a map
Seriously... it's distracting when glaring geography errors pop up in any show. In this one, first, Harpers Ferry does not have a college, and second, Harpers Ferry is about a one hour drive from DC. It would take more time for the team to get to an airport to their jet, fly to Martinsburg (the closest town with an adequate airport), and then 35 minute drive from Martinsburg to Harpers Ferry. Writers could have put even a little bit of authenticity into the show if they had bothered to research the area and used Martinsburg, WV, Hagerstown, MD, Frederick, MD, or any other mid to large size town in the region which actually have colleges and an airport. Won't even get into using the wrong state flag. Otherwise a satisfying episode.
Grey's Anatomy: No Good at Saying Sorry (One More Chance) (2009)
Callie
This new 'Callie is poor' just makes me mad. She is a senior resident orthopedic surgeon who would be making a six figure salary. There are a bunch of other outcomes associated with Callie becoming estranged from her family that the writers could have considered. This is a punch in the face for viewers who do struggle financially, and/or have a mountain of school debt that wasn't paid off by daddy.
Otherwise, the stories remain compelling, even years after they were first aired. Bailey is definitely the star of this season. Wading through the Izzie story is distracting given the complete lack of actual outcomes associated with an aggressive series of cancer treatments.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: Leave No Trace (2022)
Anyone else smell a pilot?
This episode had all the feels of a pilot. Good looking agent, 423 potential crime locations, a solid basis for a crime show. Could be a unique and interesting procedural.
As for the show itself, the usual NCIS putting its foot in where it doesn't belong. Would NCIS allow NPS to take over an investigation if one of its rangers was a victim on a Navy station? Of course not. Do always like seeing Ducky, and Jimmy's 6-pack - woof!! The NCIS production crew continues to demonstrate an uneducated, narrow view of the WADC region which the show could operate out of, including Bethesda, Fort Detrick, and Camp David.
The Adam Project (2022)
Really good
What more do the critics want? Good acting. Good script. Entertaining. Just enough action. Good amount of humor. Especially well done to Walker Scobell... looking forward to your next movie. Easily 10 stars.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: The First Day (2021)
Stories are topical
Enough with the negative reviews over a story line that deals with current events. NCIS routinely deals with (and truth be told, exaggerates the frequency of) cases of espionage, terrorism, bio warfare, bombings, gang violence, drugs, spouse killings, kidnappings, etc., etc., etc. All acts of violence, mayhem, and/or other life altering events that are routinely in the news. It's actually more disconcerting watching TV shows which totally ignore a global health event that has affected so many in so many ways. NCIS treatment of COVID was appropriate, touching, and demonstrated a view of military operations which very much take COVID seriously.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Ummmm...
It is so important that everyone, especially our young people, learn about history and historical figures - good, bad, or whatever. And while I'm okay with fictional, compilation characters to tell a story, it's not okay to produce such a revisionist series as to blur what is true and not true. We tried hard to watch the first episode of the series, but the first five minutes were so full of errors that it was distracting and off putting. John Brown was an interesting and important story to tell. It would have been easy to tell it with the facts. Too bad the writer and director chose not to.
Criminal Minds: Ghost (2020)
Not the best, not the worst
I'm seeing a bit of a trend in this last season of CM. The writers seem to be packing a lot of story in 40 or so minute shows. This episode definitely had some plot holes, which I won't mention here because of spoilers; but the episode was entertaining enough to keep watching through to a satisfying outcome.
First Man (2018)
No joy
This movie was not about the events that led up to the first step on the moon, but rather a depressing view of Neil Armstrong's life. I felt like a group of dementors were hovering above me since, instead of euphoria, particularly toward the end of the movie, I felt like all the joy had been sucked out of me. The characters were morose and the camera work left me nauseous. This movie could have been a great telling of a monumental moment in history, but I suspect it will go down in movie history as a second or third rate biopic.
Black·ish: Liberal Arts (2017)
Was this a pilot?
This episode had all the makings of a pilot for a new show featuring Zoe, her two new friends, and zany school administrators. If this is the case, I think it might make a worthy addition to the TV comedy lineup. Perhaps the producers are looking at the success of A Different World, hoping for the same(?).
Breaking In (2011)
Laugh Out Loud Funny
Not sure what the reviewer who gave this show one star was watching. I like Jack Nicholson, and other than having similarly shaped eyebrows, Slater has his own unique style.
The pilot was clever and the dialogue rapid-fire. Was the plot "silly"? Well, maybe. But what else should we expect from a 30-minute comedy that is produced by Adam Sandler? This show is a great addition to our list of favorites that include Leverage (which, by the way, has a great cast) and Psych.
This show wins on many levels. The concept of criminal masterminds is not original, but having it done in a 30-minute comedy is genius! This show has LOT's of potential. Looking forward to seeing more!!
The Lost Room (2006)
Something New For A Change
This is a creative and imaginative story line. So far, there is also the absence of the droll, overused idea that aliens planted things and are now watching us like some sort of big lab experiment. As the story unfolds, lets hope that nothing pops out of anyones stomach. Its actually interesting that the writers are giving the credit for these items to God.
While the story line is an attention grabber, the acting is just so-so. The lead character does a good job, but most others seem stiff and over-rehearsed. And, some scenes are just a little too hard to digest, pulling the viewer back into reality -- like how many times can one fall out of the sky onto hard pavement and survive? There is also an element of familiarity between the little girl and Dakota Fanning, who has been very successful in pulling off the big-eyed, innocent parts.
All in all, this show is worth watching.
La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998)
Beautiful, moving
I am rarely moved to go out and find the DVD of a film I've just seen, however, I will be buying this one. Like many other commenter's, I stumbled across this work of art while channel surfing (I missed the first 20 minutes or so), and was immediately captivated.
The movie is ROTFL funny (the 'jazz-off'), moving (the girl, the music), and insightful. Tim Roth was inspiring as was the music which absolutely deserved the Golden Globe Best Score. Tornatore succeeded in drawing me into the life of this ship and the heart of this gentle and charming man. To all who gave this film to us who live beyond the 88 keys... well done!
