Inside Out (2015)
Arguably the best Pixar film.
This movie inverts the usual children's film trope in which the protagonist finds their "true self" and wins, Inside Out demonstrates that rather than one overriding sense of bravery or happiness we are made up of differing emotions who can all be active at the flick of a button, and we needn't ignore negative feelings but learn to live with them and grow as people.
Truly one of the most thought provoking and interesting Disney Pixar films I've seen.
Soul (2020)
Pixar pushes itself forward again, to fantastic results.
Soul is a beautiful film. My only grievance is that I had to watch it at home but if this was released in cinemas when lockdown ends I would definitely see it on the big screen.
The animation artwork is incredible, this is something that we expect from Pixar but they manage to keep it fresh and innovative by pushing boundaries of how characters are represented on screen.
Having avoided spoilers the story itself was a surprise to me and a welcome one at that, Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey work well together in the lead roles and the music feels authentic and passionate.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Could've been great, but isn't.
If you're looking for a smart superhero movie then this is not for you. Where this film fails is a plot with far too many convenient coincidences, where it succeed is a couple of well framed shots. Whilst Zack Snyder can shoot a film to look cool he really doesn't tell a story worth watching here.
Previous superhero films have been enjoyed by having a signature style, being grounded in reality or building back stories that allow you to connect with the characters, this film has none of the above.
It relies on the names and reputations of other versions of these characters and hopes by shoving them together that you'll be happy, you won't be.
Comic Book Men (2012)
Is what it says and more
Originally based on the podcast Tell Em Steve Dave this show works because of the relationship between cast members who've known each other since their teenage years.
It has cameos from some of the stars of the comic book world as well as one of a kind items on screen.
Great comedy, fantastic show.
