Mindhunters (2004)
Still entertaining
I saw this movie when in came out in 2004 and have since seen it a couple of times. It's still very enjoyable and has aged well. The pace is quick and most of the time you wonder what the hell is going on. Nowadays there seems to be the need for a twist in every movie, but I remember that in 2004 a twist was a rare thing an this movie was a pleasant surprise. I also like the fact that the big players in this ensemble C.Slater and V. Kilmer kind of disappear early on in the movie. That really keeps you guessing because nobody of the relatively unknown actors can be considered safe in this movie. If you see this on the TV, this movie is absolutely worth tuning in.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Dated but fun
I saw this movie once late at night on the TV and recently with a friend at a wonderful open air venue in the summer. So my opinion is based on two very different experiences.
What sticks in the mind after those two viewings how great the cast of this movie is. Tim Curry is just plain sexy. And thats very difficult for a hairy guy in high heels. If never much cared for him in any other films but here he is just dead on. The same does apply for the rest of the cast. Susan Sarandon with her big big scared eyes. Riff-Raff and Magenta are excellently played with their exchange of meaningful glances.
The tunes are all very catchy, but don't look for a great story or any meaning in it. This is a comedy and a persiflage to all lot of trashy science-fiction and hammer-films.
I had to realize that the fact that it's a persiflage can be overlooked by some younger viewers. The friend I took along to the viewing hat never heard of the RHPS and it wasn't until I told her during the break that they it's not a serious approach and that all those goofs and tacky special effects are there deliberately. However I must admit that it's a little bit dated. All the outrageous moments and actions in this movie are mostly not outrageous anymore. A lot of the attire can nowadays be seen on a normal Saturday night at a disco near you.
But it's nevertheless an enjoyable movie and I highly recommend seeing it with public interaction.
The Bang Bang Club (2010)
Heartwrenching movie about responsibility and friendship
I watched this movie by chance because it was on the TV so I didn't have high expectations. I've never read the book and I hadn't heard of the Bang Bang Club so this was all new to me. A very interesting movie which leaves you wondering. Are those photographers brave men who show the public what it needs to see? Or are they adrenaline driven mavericks who do nothing when they see horrible crimes overwhelmed by the possibility of a good shot?
I'm not a big fan of Ryan Phillippe and this movie didn't change my opinion. Somehow I found his character lifeless which is odd because he seems to be the main character in this movie. The love story is unnecessary and gave the impression that the filmmakers desperately were looking for a reason to have woman in the main cast. However the rest of the cast is brilliant especially Taylor Kitsch who I hope will have a big career in the years to come.
This is a fine movie and I highly recommend it. However be informed that it is not a feel-good movie and sometimes hard to take because of the amount of violence and tragedy.
