Banshee!!! (2008)
Banal
I have to agree with the previous poster who quite rightly mentioned the unfinished and/or incomplete feel of this movie. It's quite evenly paced but there are a few superfluous scenes used as "filler" which beggar explanation. For example, after the group witness two of their number killed in the most gruesome manner they very quickly revert to cracking jokes and giving someone a hard time because he needs to pee!!? I mean.. what?? The creature itself is passable given the budget but the Banshee of legend has more in common with the fairy folklore than what they have here, which seems to be some kind of hybrid "shrieker" from the Tremors movies, I was also reminded of Rawhead Rex (1986). The acting was patchy at best but the most disappointing element of this film was the ending where it descends into some kind of lame pseudo pastiche of visual styles which ultimately fails to impress. That said, I've seen a lot worse.
Flood (2007)
Life imitating art?
I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago and... wouldn't you know it, on the 8th of Nov extremely high winds hit the north of Scotland and a couple of days later we hear on the news about it being one of those rare occasions when a tidal surge has thundered down the English channel threatening to swamp parts of the east coast and the Thames flood barriers had to be raised, I mean, talk a about deja vu!! Anyway, the film itself was just about watchable, the acting talent available was under used, the rather flimsy dialogue was in places almost drowned out by an overbearing and irritating action music soundtrack and the whole thing smacked of a made for TV production complete with plot holes, unfulfilled side stories and lots of people fussing about and getting stroppy about not being able to see the disaster unfold on their big screens at COBRA headquarters. The opening sequences definitely weren't filmed in Wick. Apart from the fact that the accents were way off and the general layout and elevation of much of the town means that it wouldn't succumb to that level of flooding, I didn't see one single Wicker on their rooftop with a fishing rod!
It Waits (2005)
It Waits... We wait
Okay, if this contains any spoilers at all they won't be too extensive since I have to admit that I could only stomach just over 30 minutes of this dross. The first 20 minutes plays out like a weakly dramatised infomercial on the dangers of drink driving, the two characters we have a handle on by this time are about as deep as a cookie tray, seem to have an almost fatal case of the clichés and just as "she" confesses to "he" that she was responsible for her best friend's (and his girl friend's) death - what do they do? They jump into the sack for some well covered soft core, that's what! - the creature is basically introduced as someone with a breathing problem running around with a shaky camera, hiding in the scrub and generally exuding bad attitude... when it gives our "heroes" a scare naturally they reach for the bottle of booze. At this point I switched off and for a few seconds I thought about making it my purpose in life to warn everyone off buying or renting this movie - I gave it a rating of 1 for the nice forest scenery and the silly parrot with the fake voice. Avoid!
Shower of Blood (2004)
Familiar Voice
Despite the wonderful looking petite Lisa the whole coherence of this movie fell apart so badly that by the third quarter all that held my attention was the uncanny similarity of Uncle Marty's voice with that of the character Dr. Wallace Breen in the Half-Life 2 computer game. It's almost like Martin Shannon and Robert Culp share the same larynx! As for this movie... ummm... I nearly forgot it already. Did anyone else notice the likeness?
Okay, it's an amusing movie although I'd like to have seen the actors having more fun with their roles - there isn't a plot to speak of, just a series of vampirish clichés punctuating the numerous occasions the actresses get their kit off - plenty of silicone on display, fake blood and the occasional half decent cgi transformation. Rent it if you have to but don't buy it!
