Destroyer (2018)
Really draggy for a simple plot
This should be a dragbuster movie. Nicole Kidman is a stunning, versatile and veteran actress. Without her anchoring the key role, no one could watch another minute more. Fascinating character, somewhat typical in dysfunctional Asian families - a bitter mom who turns the reverse of all warm and loving into a rough, cussing and swearing old crone. Despite life's hardships, one should really learn how to not end on even more emotional burden until total unnecessary drama unfolds. There are many fine things to focus on in life than past regrets.
Pokot (2017)
Very shallow plot
It was obvious from the start who the murderer was. The naive who enjoy the entire movie even think it was the animals!
No crook would even hunt or kill men's best friends for centuries, let alone for sport.
To all the shallow, self-entitled ones who agree the protagonist's actions of innocently baiting and using the trust of hunters to kill them in cold-blood and ways more vicious than just a bullet to the head, are justified, you have no sense of reality in the present day.
Look at how commercial farms are farming humans and animals on a large scale causing unnecessary harm to our environment, species and the planet and then let me know how a bunch of rural hunters compare to these legalised businesses.
The Female Brain (2017)
Sexist movie
This movie is full of stereotypes and forces men and women to both fall into their respective gender roles as fixed by society.
If a man is not comfortable with a woman trying to improve his life, then he should man up and look for a man instead of blaming someone else for his flaws.
Vikingdom (2013)
Low budget but decent movie
The wigs were very distracting. Fake fur on shoes, bags, blankets and clothing were very noticeable. Some scenes were good even with low budget. If you ignore the side characters, the four main characters including the only female had decent acting skills.
The plot is simple and not overly complicated and is a well-worn but good story-line about the good defeating the bad despite many setbacks.
The cinematography shots were done well despite the use of poor filters in a location that does not resemble Norway in summertime. They did the best they could without real snow. I loved the scene with the dead souls and its use of real humans instead of CG duplicated humans.
Raw edged (not in good way) but authentic. Could have been a Hollywood blockbuster if there were more attention paid to details.
So Cosmo (2017)
No brainer show
Instead of showing fans behind the scenes of what its like working behind an iconic magazine (or what was once), this "reality" TV style show revolves around anything trivial but that.
The huge amount of banal, bland content makes working at Cosmo look like no one in position works at Cosmo.
Perhaps one day there should be a series about interns or outsourced companies that actually work at or for Cosmo, which would be more interesting than this.
How this show ever got funded just shows who owns the media companies and its far fewer that whatever you think it is.
Before We Go (2014)
Good plot, Terrible ending
The movie started off just okay and swung into this incredibly helpful busker with above-average looks who wanted so badly to help this above-average looking girl.
In the middle of the movie, viewers were made to feel sorry for both the busker and the girl with their less-than-stellar relationships.
As the duo had spent a significant amount of time together in various situations throughout the movie, naturally viewers would grow to have an affinity for both characters.
Finally when the duo are made almost inseparable, the day breaks and the duo must part for logical but not emotional reasons.
At the very least, the director should have shown a real ending instead of a non-conclusive cliffhanger.
It is a romantic movie not a sci-fi movie hence the audience is very different.
Master of None (2015)
I'm Asian and I HATE it
I was hopeful and anticipated watching a rare comedy series by an Asian/ Indian person and was treated with disgust.
There was absolutely no comedy in the comedy and the actors especially the female lead/ love interest was totally awful in pretending to even be fake. Anyone even a monkey could take up her role and make it more palatable.
I forced myself to watch a few minutes more hoping it would change - the result was like counselling a dysfunctional family -> somehow you had that sinking deep feeling that it wouldn't work out from the start.
Netflix should have given under TV series a chance and not pull down their brand name which such terrible, un-watchable show.
John Wick (2014)
Unrealistic nonsense
So the whole idea of justice and epitome of first-world problems goes to the fantastic plot of invincible Kiwi Reeves who starts going all crazy killing everyone in the world over a car which he gets replaced for free and a dog he didn't really like and had around for two days. Despite the fact that the dog was a gift from his freshly dead wife, he chucked some blankets on the floor and took it off the bed. The same man who had no feelings over the dog had no feelings expressed when his best buddy got killed. Are viewers supposed to root for such a spoiled rich boy. Are viewers supposed to believe that a hit-man incapable of loving can all of a sudden switch to his cell phone video of his wife and think about her from time to time? Kiwi's character is full of contradictions like the movie for a 5 year old.
Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
The Scary Thing is Where's the Plot?
What was the thing in Iraq and why does it speak Latin instead of a middle eastern all older language? The movie was certainly scary at the parts where you couldn't see anything. The lengthy exorcism scene could be split into multiple episodes of a project that almost didn't make it. At the end, the music was touching but not too much the scene. Now every child, teenager and youngster who has seen this movie will keep away from owl necklaces, stuff toys and and spooky aboriginal/ Egyptian inspired bird designs. Nice to see how every other reviewer just mentioned about the scary scenes and do not give a hoot about the lack of storyline. One might wonder why horror is a genre for mindless folks.
Age of Tomorrow (2014)
Just plain awful
Where's zero stars out of 10 when you need it? Got confused with a similar movie title starring Tom Cruise EDGE of Tomorrow and boy did we pay dearly for it. Besides third rate acting, CGI that looks worse than my photoshop skills, I was constantly bombarded by my man who repeatedly try to sell the holographic doctor from Star Trek Voyager. The worse bit was the "magical" axe throwing and actors who already knew what was going to happen on screen and pre-empted an explosion. One may wonder if an Amazon model wrote the script. Talk about stereotypes and we have to have a Chinese doctor who looks more like a uptown housewife. My absolute favourite part of the movie was counting the number of times the axe swung and killed the alien without any blood or stain on it. Perhaps the axe rental company was strict on their borrowing terms.
Ghost World (2001)
Arty movie with a heavy-hearted lesson
This movie tells people to avoid problem children (Enid) otherwise good, kind people like Seymour will get hurt. It had a light-hearted, humorous start, a draggy middle which was filled with suspense that made me want to watch on intrigued. The ending made me feel that my heart was filled with sadness. I am glad that Seymour could finally move on from his troubled but deeply connected relationship. It's tragic that people like Enid cannot or will not face the harsh reality of life. Perhaps she could be labeled an escapist. Scarlett Johansen plays the friend that is only present when she wants something. It's more like a one-sided friendship which probably caused more harm than good to Enid in the long run.
