Jusqu'à la garde (2017)
Riveting social drama with impressive emotional form
Riveting directing by debuting Xavier Legrand and stellar acting by both actors playing parents (Léa Drucker and Denis Ménochet), and most importantly by the young actor Thomas Gloria. It's been a while since a decent movie by brothers Dardennes, here you'll their style and even more. Real and touching in every scene until the final credits.
Precise use of close ups translating the real emotional power of the characters and accurately composed scenes provide a great experience of social drama on screen.
The Florida Project (2017)
Baker's Disney convulsions
S. Baker's ferocious and dummy Disney Resort life features documentary style and outstanding colouring which is the best thing to experience it on big screen. All different worlds: the joy of childhood, the mud of Florida's middle class and people living at social disjuncture come together is this isolated space with their own vicious circles. And the only escape is to run for another artificial Disney World (personally, I didn't like the ending).
Great show performance by young Brooklyn Prince and Willem Defoe's "Bobby" (sort of Disney World designer) who interlink different scenes. Unfortunately, I found Halley's character (played by Bria Vinaite) too stereotipical, but most of all too single-sided, without even making a small character arc (the whole performance is based on smoking, screaming and yelling).
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Y. Lanthimos mutated!
Cannes Film Festival darling director introduces a sexual neurosis of pervert-look teenager and reflects it on a bloody dream of a doughfaced cardiologist.
Full of overcrowded details, pretentious try to create an allegoric and intimidating atmosphere - everything detonates like a silly modern tragedy.
The Ballad of Lefty Brown (2017)
Scetchy western
So-so accomplished western with some mixture of other genres, impressive role by Bill Pullman and huge bucket of cinematic mistakes, ranging from weak supporting cast to tv-style editing and cinematography. It strongly lacks THAT THING what's called being a good western.
