Race 2 (2013)
Not bad, but definitely no match to the prequel!
The mere fact that Race was so out-of-the-box, so stylish and packed in with a host of twists forced me to go for the sequel. The promo looked promising, the star cast had enough power and the music was good enough too. Unfortunately, the movie turned out to be quite a letdown. The story continues from where it left in the prequel, but when Bipasha is killed by a gunman, it turns into a revenge-cum-heist-cum-deceptive story. The problem itself with the movie is that despite having a weak story, much like the prequel, it misses the range of twists from the first installment. The locales no doubt are lovely, but beyond that there isn't much. The music (barring Lat Lag Gayee to an extent) does not match the first's tunes like Pehli Nazar, Zara Zara and Khwaab Dekhe. Among the actors, John is fine but no match for Akshaye Khanna from the prequel, or even to his own wickedness in Dhoom. Deepika and Jaqueline sure look good, but don't have much scope to act. Anil Kapoor and Amisha Patel turn out to be rather irritating with their many double-meaning dialogues and the stupid chemistry. The only commendable performance though is by Saif, who transforms wonderfully from the casanova in Cocktail to the shrewd Ranveer in Race2. The story isn't too interesting and the twists not too shocking, thought the film definitely has its moments. The casino sequence in the first half is excellently compelling, so are the few scenes between Saif and the heroines. The much hyped wrestling scene and the stupidly executed climax act as let downs though. Also, the whole museum heist sequence acts against the movie's already slow-pace. While the first half has all the songs and some great moments (near the interval), the second becomes very sluggish and predictable. Overall a decent popcorn watch, but if you expect something as smart as the prequel, you will be left highly discontent. I was, hence the low rating. 5/10.
Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi (2012)
A 'beyond decent' watch :)
For me, movies should be judged by whether it fulfils your expectations. It doesn't matter if films like Bodyguard or Ek Tha Tiger or Ra. One break records. If you promise say, an action movie, you should deliver it. Shirin..does deliver. Its a sweet simple store. Decent acting, great humour and some meaningful (though occasionally stretched) drama. Expect a good gentle flick, and there would be no disappointment. Both Boman and Farah are good, with able support by everyone else. Its just the songs that seem unwanted at places. Overall, quite a watchable fare. Quite a welcome change from all the meaningless masala stuff Bollywood is churning out these days! Go for it :)
