I've been following this series for what feels like forever, and for me comparison to True Detective are inevitable, since both series are of the anthology format and deal in great part with the psychology of both the investigators and the criminals. I feel that The Sinner comes on top in this little contest in several key aspects, perhaps because some continuity is maintained by having the same main character. Over the seasons the show interestingly morphs from being a show about "the sinner" being the criminal (of the season) into being about Ambrose, and by extension, people in general.
I especially like the complex psychological and almost philosophical subject matter.
Season 1 is extremely good. The jarring nature of Cora's behavior and the inexplicability of her motives is excellently augmented by Ambrose's unorthodoxy.
Season 2 was a slight downtrend. But that's just because I'm not intho child actors and cults.
Season 3 is extremely intense and expertly left ambiguous as to let viewers make their own decisions. Chris Messina as Nick delivers a haunting, oppressive performance.
