War Chod Na Yaar (2013)
War Chod na Yaar . . .
This movie with an absurd name is about a situation where a war is declared between two countries and the incidents that happen around it. Since its an Indian movie , the war needs to be against its obvious 'enemy' Pakistan. The movie is coined as the first war comedy. And is most definitely hilarious, but in parts.
War Chod na yaar is the perfect example of an exceptional concept decently executed. And most importantly it not a biased movie where the Pakistani army gets bashed and the Indian army emerges victorious(Well to an extent the Indian army is shown much organized, but come on its an Indian movie). Another portrayal which truly impressed me is that the director / writer has ensured that none of the army soldiers are shown killed on/by either side. Supremely talented Javed Jaffery once again excels once again.and So does Sharmaan Joshi, Sanjay Mishra. But a special mention goes to Dilip Tahil who portrays the character of all the ministers, which I felt was the inside message of the movie(Politicians of every country are the same and exploit/manipulate the army/citizens) .And Soha Ali khan was just above par. The antakshari sequence between the Indian and the Pakistani army is extremely hilarious. And so is the sequence where the Pakistani minister has discussions to the Chinese general and requests to speak in Punjabi, And the Chinese general puts on the 'China made' translator and starts talking like Sidhu.
The only but a major disappointment in the movie according to me was the climax. It was a complete letdown especially after having such a good plot. And I felt the movie should have ended sensibly. It gave a 'times up lets finish it' kinda finish. and also didn't find the need of any songs in the movie and the romance between the Hero and heroine was put in just because there needed to be song. But overall a pretty decent attempt to portray a serious concern in a light hearted way. A better crisply edited version of it would have been much entertaining.
Talaash (2012)
Overall a good watch
Talaash is a gripping tale which keeps you at the edge right from the word go. The story unwinds like a web spun all around you and keeps you intriguing about what is happening and what is coming up next.It definitely is not a flawless film. Background score is awesome and keeps on with the pace of the movie.
The lead character,Aamir playing a cop, is battling with his own set of problems in his personal life plus is investigating a high profile accident case. The director has successfully managed to narrate multiple stories from different perspective in a linear fashion. Performances by all the actors has been power packed. Special mention about Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shernaz Patel. He shows how good an acting powerhouse he is and keeps you engaged every time he is on screen.
The climax to be honest surprises you because thats the least you were expecting , but when you do come out of the hall you do feel . . . it could have had a better climax. The movie does have some old clichés but barring that a good movie to watch. If you are a fan of serious cinema and are willing to accept out of the box outcomes . . . Do watch it . .
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
Nikal Li jaan !!
These Kind of horribly sense less romantic movies have become Shahrukh Khan forte. This has to be one of the most pathetic movies I've seen off late. The only saving graze of the the movie were the beautiful locations . It just starts there and ends there.
The movie has every possible ingredient required for a pathetic movie. Lack of script(insult to intelligence) , over acting (Thanks to SRK and Katrina) , irritating dialogues (makes you laugh at serious movie scenarios), And no hummable songs (mediocre A.R.Rahman) and to top it all incredibly lengthy( So long that you are waiting for it to end . . . and its just the interval).
The story has too much of loop holes and these loop holes are just too much digest. A beggar in London becomes the top go to Bomb diffusing expert in The Indian Army within a span of 10 years. A wannabe discovery channel documentary girl is asked to join The Indian Army without any permission. It is as simple as . . . "come and shoot me diffuse a bomb" (Literally that simple). And the British police allows a stranger without a diffusing suit to diffuse the bomb just because he talks some mechanical terms. And the protagonist meet with an accident every alternate time when he is on English roads. One of the lead actress is introduced when she is drowning and the protagonist saves her. . . Two hours into the movie she boasts of being a national level swimming champion. I feel the writers of this movie assume the viewers to be as dumb as themselves.
Do a favour on yourself and ignore this senseless flick. Because you would experience the 3 longest hours of your life.
OMG: Oh My God! (2012)
Get Enlightened , Get Entertained
Oh my God is a very rare kind of comedy which makes you think and to a greater extent redefines your perception about religion. A very sensitive topic has been handled with grace. And you walk out of the theater thinking about what religion actually means to us. And in this age of mindless comedies , Oh My God is definitely one of the best movies this year and definitely must watch ! Paresh Rawal once again mesmerizes and shows his potential of shouldering the movie single handedly. Paresh Rawal is so very Kanji in this movie and Akshay Kumar for a change is likable. He is very much likable as Modern day God. The movie does get a bit boring in the middle but Magnificent acting by the crew makes up for it.
Grab a popcorn and a ticket . . . and a must watch !!!
Parzania (2005)
Parzania hits you hard !!
Parzania has to be one of the very well made movies Indian cinema has given us in the last decade. The content of communal riots which hit India in the early 2000's has been handled very delicately and to excellence by Mr. Dholakia. The beauty of the movie being the thin line between the story of the Parsi family and the communal riots has been commendably drawn. The cast is very off beat for a perfectly off beat movie. Nasereuddin Shah once again shows why is he called the acting powerhouse of Indian Cinema. Sarika is a surprise content of the movie and has been well rewarded with the National Award for this movie. The child actors too have done a commendable job. The excitement that Dilshad shows when she gets to know that her brother would be back within 7 days is worth a mention.
This is movie hits you hard and seriously makes an impact. And makes you feel to make a difference to the society.
Wake Up Sid (2009)
Awakening the underdog !
I recently got an opportunity to watch this movie on a DVD and I was not disappointed. This movie connects with you immediately because of its very realistic script and could relate to the movie immediately. Ayan Mukherjee's effort in movie making is worth mentioning, He has a very simplistic yet unique way of story telling and helps us connect to the characters within a flash. His the Dil Chahta hai esque style of movie making fascinates! The cast is very well chosen as they suit the bill perfectly. Ranbir has done a great job depicting Sid. But you come out of the movie with Konkana playing with your mind. She is very refreshing and yet again proves she is one of the finest actors in India. Supriya Pathak plays her part to perfection.
The music of the movie is worth mentioning.Iktara is the song you'd be humming for the next couple of days!
Don't miss it ! Worth having a DVD watch!
