Sharknado (2013)
Sharknado...is EXACTLY as the name suggests!
Is Sharknado worth watching? Here's a typical moment:
-A helicopter flies into danger with a home made bomb to try to stop a Shark infested Tornado!
-A passenger falls from the door and straight into the open mouth of a Great White Shark!
-On the ground, a man with a chainsaw, leaps into the mouth of the offending Shark as it falls and slices it open from the inside...thus saving the day!
You decide...
(I sat through it)
Elementary (2012)
Elementary, my dear viewer...
I really like this show. Please read on: Elementary follows the escapades of the legendary "Sherlock Holmes" in the modern day setting of New York.
As a recovering Heroin addict, he is assigned a "Sober Companion" by his father, in the form of Lucy Liu, "Joan Watson," an ex-surgeon who has chosen her new career after a crisis of confidence, due to the death of a patient.
At first I was dubious about, yet another, incarnation of the Sherlock character. In recent years, Benedict Cumberbatch (I think that's how you spell it) and Robert Downey Jr. have both played the character.
After watching the first episode, however, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with how well the show has been executed.
The Holmes character feels original and is played as a scruffily dressed, flawed and damaged man with poor social skills, nice tattoos, a egomaniac personality and an obsessive compulsive thirst for knowledge. These traits, combined with a heightened awareness of his senses, mean that his chosen occupation of "Consulting Detective," is one of maybe a handful of careers that would be possible to him.
It is hard to imagine the reality of Sir Arther Conan Doyles character to be any different, if he were to have existed outside of the pages of a book. (Especially in modern day New York) The other characters are varied. The NYPD police chief, "Captain Gregson" took a little getting used to...and his colleague "Detective Bell" was lost on me until he had his own episode, about half way through the first season. But all in all, the cast and characters work well and fit together nicely.
Most episodes are quite stand alone and a crime will usually be solved within the 45 minutes. there are several story arcs that are ongoing, tho...and these are primarily what make it well worth watching.
Without giving too much away, the ongoing evolution of both Holmes and Watsons characters, along with their strained relationship with each other, is fantastic. Learning about Holmes' past and how he came to know Gregson...the emergence of a pattern in the crimes...the introduction late in the season to the infamous "Moriarty"...
In short...the show is what it is. A New York based crime series with a kooky and erratic lead and his straight edge sidekick.
But in my opinion, Elementary is far more than that. It follows suit with the British made "Sherlock"...but achieves the transition of the Holmes character to the modern day, in a much more believable and original way. There's a lot more to this than giving the man a mobile phone and a nice coat.
If you're looking for an exact replica of a Sherlock Holmes novel...don't bother...
But if you're looking for a well written show about a legendary character, with all the flaws and troubles of a modern man with infinitely more to it than other run of the mill attempts with this kind of format like Monk or the Mentalist...
Then I would strongly advise ELEMENTARY!
