Pennyworth (2019–2022)
9/10
Excellent show!
5 February 2024
Creator and writer Bruno Heller strikes gold again. He brought us such shows as Rome and The Mentalist, and now Pennyworth. He should have won ALL the writing awards for this gem of a show.

Set as the backstory of Alfred Pennyworth, takes place in the alternative universe of London in the 1960's. The lead actor is Jack Bannon and he nails it as a young Michael Caine (Batman's Alfred Pennyworth). His mannerisms and especially his East London (Cockney) accent are bang on.

Bruno Heller tapped into his Rome days for actors Polly Walker and James Purefoy. The character of Bet Sykes played by Paloma Faith is a scene stealer with her accents, dialogue, and action.

There is a decent level of violence embedded in a well twisting plot that is consistent among all episodes. I'm sad that it ended after just 3 seasons. I could have kept watching for a lot more.

I'm not a fan of the Batman movies but i loved this show so whether you are a fan or not i cant see how you wont love this show!

Excellently Weird
13 January 2024
Weird, Quirky, Off-beat, Strange. Pick any combination of those words and you've just described Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.

Pretty solid acting all around but i need to make a couple of shouts.

First, playing Dirk Gently is Samuel Barnett. He nails the character. Awesome job.

Second shout out goes to Michael Eklund who plays Martin. This is not a nuanced role with complex emotions and dialogue. Eklund makes the Martin character a force to be reckoned with.

This show has more twists and turns than a really twisty turny thing that i cant think of right now. But somehow things are *interconnected* make sense in their way.

Whoever wrote this must be an amazing and creative genius. Oh right, it's Douglas Adams.

Fun Fact: Douglas Adams was 6'5" tall. For a British guy born in 1952 that is freakishly tall.

Both seasons are consistently weird and great. Perfect binge watching material!

A Well Earned 3 Stars
13 January 2024
Before watching this i made sure my expectations were sufficiently lowered. But apparently they weren't lowered enough.

Not even Josh Lucas likability factor could save this flick. His overacting is a disappointment and it's a theme among the other actors.

The writing is pretty bad, from the overall concept right down to the dialogue.

I doubt there is a hangover strong enough to let you watch this movie all the way through.

On the positive side the shark was pretty cool. I'm still not entirely sure what its deal was but it was big, kind of angry looking and it liked biting things and eating people.

Bodies (2023)

Intense
25 October 2023
This show is intense and really well done.

The IMD summary for BODIES is as follows: "Four detectives in four different time periods of London find themselves investigating the same murder."

The summary is deceptively simple and my curiosity was hooked by it.

The pace is bang on for the material, leading the viewer along perfectly - absorbing the details, questioning, wanting more.

Strong characters, strong acting and very believable sets.

I struggle to provide details without giving away anything that you should discover on your own so i'll stick to being vague.

BODIES is highly binge-watchy and i'm sad there are only 8 episodes but i do admit that is kind of the perfect amount. More episodes would have just dragged things down and a second season seems highly unlikely.

Give it a try, i hope you'll like it.

The Alienist (2018–2020)

Good show
16 October 2023
Strong characters, great sets, seems to me to be pretty historically accurate in its portrayal of the people and conditions during that time period.

The storyline itself feels a bit farfetched, but that's ok.

The acting was good until Dakota Fanning decided to whisper her lines. I call this the Kiefer Sutherland Trap. I think actors who do this believe they are achieving some peek level of being dramatic but really it's just frustrating for the people watching. It's unrealistic and unnecessary and it drives me mad.

Another thing that drives me mad is how imdb insists that reviews be 600 characters minimum. Who the hell wants to write or read a 600 character movie or show review? AND to make matters worse, imdb doesn't enforce this policy uniformly. I've seen reviews with far less characters than 600.

Dumbest policy.

Anyway, the alienist is a good show, easily binge worthy. But if you hate when actors whisper their lines, skip this one.

Dark and Dirty
11 July 2023
The lead character, played by Jorma Tommila, may be the scariest character in film or television. Hollywood needs this guy doing more movies.

Not a lot of subtlety in this movie. A hellish landscape, clear bad guys (Nazis), some victims, and a bad ass hero.

If you like movies with violence and blood, check out Sisu.

I predict I'll be watching this movie again down the road some time.

That's my review but i cant post it because IMDB says i need 200 more characters. So now i have to waste my time and yours writing bla bla bla before i can hit the Submit button.

This is why i dont do more reviews.

Great show!
6 May 2023
The basics: Great writing, great acting, great production

The actor who played Pablo Escobar created a character that wasn't just a one-sided "he's a bad guy". He portrayed an Escobar who was as likable as he was cold blooded and ruthless which I'm inclined to think is more realistic.

There is a very effective integration of the show with the historical reality.

I like shows and movies where their is a narration. I find it takes the pressure off of writing dialogue that has to convey an abundance of necessary and often dry data to the audience.

Most of the dialogue is in Spanish with subtitles. I think this was the right call. If you're not a Spanish speaker and you're not usually a fan of "foreign dialogue with subtitles" don't let that deter you, this show makes it work.

For me this was a perfect binge-watch series. I ate up the 3 seasons like i was starving and it was the perfect meal. I hear there is a sequel set in Mexico so i'm ready for some quality binge time on that.

Cheers,

Bad
4 January 2023
This movie is not clever. It's not funny. It's just a bunch of white noise on my screen.

I cant imagine someone writing this and then sitting down, looking at their work and thinking; "wow, this is so good i should do more writing".

There isn't a single character that i developed any sort of interest in or attachment to.

The only thing worse than this movie is the 600 character minimum for reviews imposed by imdb. I mean how many ways can i say "this is a crappy movie"?

124 characters left until i can submit this hazardous materials warning label.

I hope whoever greenlit this movie is forced to take time off and consider alternative career options.

Fun
31 October 2022
I'm not a fan of the typical over the top Marvel flicks but She-Hulk: Attorney At Law managed to keep my quite entertained as i binge watched the entire series.

I give the writing and acting a definite thumbs up. The "cameos" were really well done i actually wanted more.

I think it's best to evaluate this series on its own merits and tamper your expectations of this as a tv series version of a Marvel movie.

I am honestly looking forward to the next season of She-Hulk. It would be a shame if it got cancelled after just the one season.

Anyway, that's pretty much all i have to say. Give it a try, hopefully you'll enjoy it.

Silly Fun
31 October 2022
A very Peter Sellers Pink Panther vibe.

Bill Murray does a great job as the title character in The Man Who Knew Too Little. Quick shout out to the director for being able to manage Murray who i think has a propensity for going overboard in his roles.

If you're looking for a fun flick for movie night and your stuck in the rabbit hole of "seen it. Seen it. Seen it..." give this gem from 1997 a try. It's an easy watch. I don't think i even eye-rolled once which i tend to do a lot these days.

I'm kinda feeling the genre vibe so i may go try and find some classic Pink Panther flicks to line up. "Does your dog bite?" ... "That's not my dog"

Very Forgettable
24 October 2022
Forgettable characters.

Forgettable acting.

Forgettable writing.

Forgettable storyline.

This is NOT even close to the quality of Game of Thrones.

5 minutes after watching an episode i can barely tell you what happened.

If you are a fan of Game of Thrones i cant see how you wont be very disappointed in this series.

OMG now i have to come up with a bunch more words to satisfy some arbitrary and unnecessary 600 character quota on reviews.

The dragons seem nice. I would like to have one but my condo has a strict No Dragons policy.

And now i am close to the end of this review and i rejoice.

Foolproof (2003)

Worth a watch
2 October 2022
I never heard of this movie but it was on Prime and none of the other options were catching my interest.

Foolproof is surprisingly good. It's a fun heist movie with good writing and a good cast. It came out in 2003 and here we are in 2022 and it didn't feel dated at all.

The movie is set in Toronto which is an interesting choice for this genre which i usually associate with new york or LA or some other big city in the US.

Some good twists and turns within a plot line that drives steady forward.

Once i finish writing this review i'm gonna check out the writer/director credits and see what else they've put out.

Anyway, give it a try, i think it's worth a watch.

Wrath of Man (2021)

bad
17 September 2022
I refuse to believe that Guy Ritchie wrote and directed this dead fish of a movie. Ritchie has a pretty unique style of writing and directing. Wrath of Man is a bag of potatoes that fell open in the produce isle, not a Guy Ritchie film.

I hope imdb doesn't make me come up with 600+ characters for this review because there really is not much more to say about it.

As for Jason Statham, dont let anyone tell you he doesnt have range as an actor. He can play angry guy in a plaid shirt, angry guy in a bullet proof vest, angry guy in a towel and slippers.

There are some other actors in the movie. They should take some time off and contemplate their participation in this movie.

I once took a big swig of some milk i didn't realize had gone bad and i would rate that experience as better than the experience of watching this movie.

Maybe i'm being too hard on this film because i had higher expectations for a Ritchie / Statham endeavor. Or maybe i'm cranky because of this dumb decision by imdb to force reviews to be 600+ characters long.

Who wants to write reviews >600 characters and who wants to read reviews >600 characters?? Seriously, this is a bad policy. It wasnt like this in the past.

Oma gerd, still not at 600 characters.

Words go here, and here, and also here. Then more words and maybe even some special character$. Butt should count as two words because a butt has two cheeks.

Very Bad
10 September 2022
Another Netflix time waster.

Writing bad. Acting bad. Directing bad.

If i was on a plane and this was the only movie on the inflight entertainment system i would grab a parachute and exit the plane in mid flight.

I gave it 2 stars but i think that may be too generous.

Everyone involved in making this movie should issue a written apology

Anyway, that's all i have to say.

Oh great, IMDB insists my review be at lest 600 characters. Am i close? I dont know. Probably not. Filler filler filler. Bad movie bad movie bad movie. This movie bad. Smelly stinky movie bad. More words required apparently. This is ridunkulous double ridunkulous. Seriously more words required??? I have no words left.

The writing is awful.

The directing is awful.

The acting is awful.

Some decent fight scenes.

If you ever find yourself in some weird situation where your only entertainment options are watching this movie or watching paint dry, i highly recommend the paint.

OMG, Great Movie
29 June 2022
This isn't the kind of movie i'd be into but i took a chance watching it and i'm glad i did.

It's got it all. It's a great underdog story which never risks being "over the top" corny sentimental. Great cameos, great acting, great writing.

Big shout out to the guy who plays the main character Bo Cruz. A more mature Adam Sandler nailed his part as well.

Great movie. If you like Guy Ritchie films you should love this. If you dont like Guy Ritchie films you still may love this film because it's great.

The writing and the acting are outstanding. Quick shout out to Hugh Grant for being awesome at not being Hugh Grant in this flick. He done good, he done real good :)

A cliché premise with bad writing and bad acting.

Probably the only thing I'm gonna remember about this movie is how much weight Ray Stevenson has gained. What happened to you Titus Pullo?!

Anyway, that's all i have to say about this.

I love it. I need more!
23 November 2021
I'm only 3 episodes in but this is now my favorite show. I gave it a 10. At the time of writing this review the overall rating for Cowboy BeBop is 6.7 which i cant understand at all.

I love the characters, the settings, the storylines and the dialogue. If i had to describe it i'd say it's a mix of; Blade Runner, Anime, steam punk and a couple other things i cant think of right now.

I need MORE Cowboy BeBop!

I watched this show when it first came out and now i'm doing a full on binge-watch 14 years later.

If you like clever, well written, and spy stuff, you're probably gonna like this show a lot.

The narration style really gives Burn Notice that extra edge. So good.

So Bad
29 August 2021
It feels like some low budget fan film that is so bad the other fan films don't want anything to do with it.

Plot sucks, directing sucks, writing really really sucks, acting really really really sucks.

Why Bruce Willis would want to be involved in this pile of poop is beyond me. I'm guessing he lost a bet or was heavily medicated at the time and had no clue what all the cameras around him were for.

Justified (2010–2015)

It's Deadwood with cell phones
26 June 2021
Justified feels a lot like Deadwood and much of that is undoubtedly due to the powerful onscreen presence of both show's lead character, Timothy Olyphant.

But i also feel a lot of other similarities in these strong character driven shows, the twisting plots and intrigues and even the settings though they take place more than a hundred years apart.

Fans of Deadwood will see a number of character arcs in Justified from some of the main characters of Deadwood.

The language in Justified is less Shakespearean and less profanity laced than Deadwood but the quality of both shows overall is on par.

If you like Deadwood, you'll probably like Justified. If you've never seen Deadwood, you'll still probably like Justified cuz it's a damn good show.

Cheers,
