Intersection (1994)
A wonderful, little unheard of film
This is a movie I would never have seen had it not been showing on HBO late one night (after a night out). I was intrigued by the opening sequence and had every intention of channel surfing but I'm glad I didn't. The movie is a series of flashbacks that Vincent Eastman (Richard Gere) is having of the demise of his marriage to wife Sally (played surprisingly well by Sharon Stone) and the budding romance he has with the "other woman" Lolita Davidovich. The flashbacks are very entertaining and pull you in as you wonder what Vincent is going to do. Previous to viewing this film, I never thought much of Sharon Stone as an actor but she acquits herself well in this role. I don't want to give away any vital information and I'm not one to point out little nuances that the director might be adding- but it is a thoroughly enjoyable film. Lolita Davidovich is delightful as the quirky breath of fresh air Vince finds surreptitiously. An added bonus: upon recently returning to this film I was bowled over to see that the once unknown daughter of Vince and Sally was none other than a very young Jennifer Morrison (of House and Once Upon A Time fame).
Haywire (2011)
Fragmentary Film
This film had potential to be a nice little film. The cast is top-notch: Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender and the newcomer Gina Carano. The film just has a feel of a rush-job, like all these fantastic actors had other things to do. The result was a series of epic fight scenes with not much in between. If you're not concerned about plot or character development, this is your film. My lament is that it easily could have incorporated an improved story line and really had a nice little film. Gina Carano is a revelation. The screen loves her, and her incredible fight sequences show that she is a bona fide action star waiting to happen. I would've cast her in The Avengers as Black Widow. I truly hope she's not a one and done star in the vein of Jon Cena (he sucks).
Buried (2010)
Ruthlessly Awful
Did you ever watch a movie where you think to yourself" I should just shut this off"? This movie is one that I wish I had never seen. Bad acting, Bad script, bad camera work. The trifecta of bad movies. This is the kind of movie that makes Gigli look good (at least you can look at JLo in that crapfest). I watched it on bluray and I generally love everything on bluray but in this case it was polishing a turd. I am now embarking on a one man mission to discourage anyone to ever watch this awful movie. This is the kind of effort that can ruin a career. I hope Ryan Reynolds isn't going to follow in Ben Affleck's footsteps and just take every script they put in front of him. Ben Affleck at least took a long pause and returned with "The Town."
Rookie Blue (2010)
Nice little show
I read somewhere that this is the Grey's Anatomy of cop shows. This is actually a good description. Rookie Blue has great story lines, dialog, and attractive people. I love this show. Missy Peregrym is perky, beautiful, and fragile yet effective as a cop. This is one of the best kept secrets on TV and seeing that it has been renewed for a 4th season, it may have a following that I don't know about. It's a Canadian show and that something I didn't know at the outset-but it made sense in retrospect. If you want a gritty, grimy cop show this may not be your speed but it is my no means cookie-cutter stuff. There's good character development, and the girls are easy to look at.
Alphas (2011)
Great Sci-Fi
This show picks up momentum as it goes along and you DO GET HOOKED. I don't believe it a duplicate of X-Men although I do understand why an uninterested observer might make that comparison. The characters are all unique and David Strathairn is brilliant in an understated way. Ryan Cartwright as Gary is sure to become a household name at some point because his acting abilities are obvious and he's an enormous talent. If you are a fan of Sci-Fi then you will love this show. The 2 females are knockouts and that doesn't hurt a bit. I highly recommend this show and would also like to recommend Haven while you're at it. It is my hope that these wonderful shows are not unceremoniously dumped before they get to showcase their potential.
