Me and Marlborough (1935)
Women have to be smarter than men. Fortunately, this is very easy...
I saw this old film by accident and was pleasantly charmed - I think it had a lot more going for it than the only other reviewer before me clearly did. The film was obviously a vehicle for the feisty Cicely - she ramped it up no end, showing how very easy it is for one gutsy female to make a whole army of males (including of course her husband) look the fools that all women intuitively know that men are - all this probably before Ms Greer was even born! If you want to consider it in depth (which I advise against) then it could be interesting to consider just how little part any other female played in the film. It may well also have something to say about the innate stupidity of the more arcane rules and regulations of life in any army. But overall, take it for what it is, a light hearted look at life on the distaff side - and you won't be disappointed.
The World's Fastest Indian (2005)
A thundering winner!
I was on a flying trip to Auckland NZ - had been wanting to see a film about "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" - it was booked out so settled for "second best" by going to see a very fast Indian indeed. Everything the previous reviewers said is echoed by me, right down to the goofy smile on my face as I walked out of the theater (what is it about US spelling! -- smile not seen since I saw the last of the Lord of the Rings trilogy).
Come on you overseas viewers - it's only been kiwi commentators so far - this film is far too good to be only viewed "Down Under".
Yes it is a kind of Cool Runnings Kiwiana - always good to see the underdog come out on top of the pack.
If you go to this film and don't enjoy it, well, maybe you were born to be a film critic?
Bláznova kronika (1964)
the lighter side of Monty Python
I was blown away by this film with overtones of Shakespeare's jesters. Whimsical satire, or maybe satirical whimsy - almost every scene in the film made me both laugh and think.
The Director wasn't even working on a shoestring - more like dental floss - but no matter - even the stark black and white settings add lustre to this funny and wonderful film.
The voter ratings overall give an accurate indication of the sheer quality of this comedic take on life.
Don't miss it if it comes to your neighbourhood. I promise you you won't be disappointed...
