Midnight Mass (2021)

Intense Psychological Misdirection
27 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
**Spoilers**

I am a student of religion and an enormous fan of well paced horror shows/films. This series is an incredible vampire story dressed up in the finery of Catholicism and fanatical obedience.

The writer and director manages to marry one of horror's classic tropes, a vampire story, with Christian fanaticism. This is a brilliant series that perfectly illustrates the dangers of Monotheistic Theologies whose very foundation relies on faith delivered by man.

The is a phenomenal perspective on how blind obedience can be taken much too far. It does carry on in parts with monologues and slower pacing, but they are necessary to the story and character development. You find yourself feeling anxious and queasy the further the story progresses. Amazing show. If you are a fan of psychological horror, vampire, and religious horror this one is for you.

Well Crafted Modern Horror
20 October 2018
I am a horror movie aficionado and consider this mini series to be one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of watching. From the casting to the score this was so well put together that for the first time I am eager to watch a series for a second time almost immediately after finishing it.

Rather than go into the plot and descriptions I will just say that the pacing of this series was superb. The characters were richly developed, layered, and you were compelled to care about them. Even minor characters were richly developed into perfect three dimensional characters. I am blown away by this series and highly, highly recommend it.

The Monkey's Paw (I) (2013)
7/10
Great acting is what makes this movie.
30 June 2014
I'm a huge fan of Horror and am always searching for a well made, well acted story, even if it does follow the same tropes.

This is a classic "be careful what you wish for" story.

A man receives a Monkey's Paw from a fellow co-worker and is granted three wishes. His first wish is selfish, and results in an accident that makes his second wish unavoidable.

That is when the fun starts.

Stephen Lang makes this movie. He was interesting and engaging in Avatar, but this performance was emotional, visceral, and thoroughly entertaining.

C.J. Thomason left me scratching my head as the lead character, but he was just good enough to not ruin the story.

I definitely went into this without any expectations and though the story is not new, and the characters did do some dumb things with stilted dialogue at times, I think the very interesting setting and the performance by Lang makes it worth watching.

Goon (2011)

Must see for hockey fans!
30 June 2014
I've seen this movie four times, and I'm not even a hockey fan. However, by boyfriend and his brother are and I pulled this out the other night hoping they would like it.

I was happy to see them laughing throughout the entire movie.

Taken at face value Goon is implausible and unrealistic, but at the same time it's too damn entertaining to really care.

The acting is spot on, and the performance by Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber are fantastic. Scott is perfect in this role of stupid, affable, tough guy drafted into hockey after beating a player while attending a hockey game. The build up to the "big fight" between him and "Ross Rhea" was perfect, and kept the story going and entertaining.

Listen, this is not "fine art" but a comical look at the grit and toughness of one of the best sports in the world.

Recommend if you're looking for something bloody with a lot of adult humor unsuitable for anyone under 18.

Triangle (2009)
4/10
Great premise, but fails to deliver.
30 June 2014
***** This review contains spoilers*******

I really like Melissa George, and was eager to watch Triangle. However, I was fairly disappointed with this movie and struggled to like it.

This movie has a great premise, and I really do think it could have been enjoyable if the title character had been a little more interesting.

"Jess" as played by Melissa George, is flat and uninteresting in the beginning of the movie. We don't find out why until the end of the movie, but by that time I wasn't actually very invested. The supporting characters weren't developed enough for us to actually care about what was happening to them and that was sad. I was actually surprised by how fast they were picked off. I understand that's needed to really move the storyline along, but it made me completely uninterested in their fate, and not really very interested in Melissa George's character either.

If you like suspenseful and atmospheric thrillers with little character development with a MC who is slightly flat and uninteresting then you will like Triangle.

If not, save yourself the time and skip this one.

By far the dumbest film I have ever seen.
1 January 2014
OMG.

This movie was singularly the worst movie I have ever seen. Ever. There was zero plot, zero real action, and the actors were portraying themselves in a "biblical apocalypse".

Honestly, I was hoping to die laughing watching this movie just because of the cast, but it only made me want to take a shower after watching it. Not only was the humor disgusting and juvenile it made me want to throw up more than once.

I am 100% positive that this movie was made to do one thing: take money out of people's pockets. It literally had zero redeeming qualities. There wasn't a single scene other than the one where Emma Watson steals all of their drinks, that was good. Good for you Ms. Watson for getting the hell out of their rapey house.

Seriously though, don't watch this movie. You would be better off painting your toe nails, changing the oil in your car, or playing in traffic. All of which I wish I had done rather than watch this ridiculous movie.

Majorly Disappointed
31 December 2013
First and foremost, I was very entertained watching this film, but it does not stay true to the books at all. There is a lot in this movie that just didn't happen in the books. The female elves didn't fight the way they're portrayed to in the movie, and an disproportionate amount of time was spent on the chase scenes and not spent in more of the major elements of the film. There could have been less comic relief and more character development in my opinion.

While the film was fun and entertaining I didn't enjoy it as much as the original nor the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

I recommend it for those who have never read the books or for those who just want to go and be entertained. I think that it was well acted, as always, and I was very pleased to see some of my favorite characters from the Lord of the Rings in this movie.

Let down of major proportions...
31 December 2013
I had such high hopes for this movie as I am an avid Eric Bana fan. He is the only redeeming quality to this film. I thought I was going to watch a movie about espionage, and get some good insight into the British legal system, but I was woefully disappointed in this movie.

The beginning starts off with a bang, literally, and then we're thrust down the road after a bomb has gone off killing XX amount of people. The idea of this movie is great, but the reveals weren't that hard to guess, and neither was the plot wholly believable. It painted the British government in a pretty harsh light, and also made the legal system look like a farce.

I don't recommend this movie unless you want to lose some time of your life you're never going to get back, or unless you really love political thrillers and the main characters in the movie. The acting was solid, no complaints there, but the plot, direction, and reveals were sorely lacking in this film.

Good Creep-tastic fun
31 December 2013
So when I watch scary movies it's usually with a blanket to shield my eyes with my hands over my ears. This one didn't disappoint. I absolutely loved the pace of this move, and the fact that the "ghosts" were ones we all saw. They didn't just jump out of corners to scare us, but were themselves characters in the story.

The story starts where the first Insidious left off, and it's a rocking scary roller coaster to the climatic finish. I love that there is the continuation with Elise, and that the movie is set up for a third chapter. Highly recommend it if you saw the first. This one will certainly not disappoint you.

Crush (II) (2013)

Refreshing thriller that will appeal to adults & mature teens.
17 April 2013
I normally do not watch movies with this type of plot-line because I find the same old tired tropes used again and again. However, the director here made, in my opinion, a refreshing, touching, and realistic movie that gave fresh depth and character to the story.

I was left guessing who the protagonist and antagonist were until the very end, and the ending was well acted, with realistic characters who acted the way I thought someone in their positions would, not the way an audience would be screaming at them not to.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a suspense/thriller/romance/horror.
