Primal (2019)
Engrossing and Beautiful
This is a very well-paced and stunning animated show. Each episode has humour, heart, and intensity. The action is well-paced and animated well. The editing is never noticeable but manages to perfectly capture both emotion and setting. This is a really good show with a lot to love.
Batman (1989)
Every home needs a copy
I don't know what decided this for me but this is the movie I always give as a wedding present. It is endlessly rewatchable with Jack Nicholson giving a wonderfully goofy Joker performance. He's a murderer but he's not a psychopath. The parade to the artist currently known as Prince is phenomenal. He pulls that massive gun from his pants and shoots the Batplane down?! Incredible. Batman murders his way through Joker's goons and Michael Keaton gives a great Bruce Wayne performance and solid Batman one. The movie is silly and lacking the finesse of later Batman properties but none of them contain the wild stylistic choices that seem fitting rather than garish (looking at you Schumacher) but Gothic not just emo (and you, Snyder). I love it but I don't think it's amazing. But a touch of nostalgia and a love of its overly-stylized self gives me a very pleasant viewing experience every time I have one.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971)
Strange little movie
Angela Lansbury is here bringing all the charm a movie with this many technical wizardry needs. She's fun to watch and an engaging screen presence. The children are boring, the animation segments are fun but forgettable, and the music is... Fine? The music feels very cut and paste without much of a soul to it. The end battle's early 70's effects are exciting to see pulled off and it's very silly but, hey, seeing Nazis get beat up is always good.
Newsies (1992)
Bland, tedious film
Musicals can be fun and exciting. Oh boy, they can be. What must those be like? You mean, they have characters who aren't as flat as my bottom? You say, their dance numbers look like they weren't choreographed for junior high boys who can hardly move a leg rhythmically? What a world that must be! This musical gives you nothing. Some good jokes at the expense of the movie, maybe. Horrible writing but some good attempts at watchable performances. Ultimately forgettable but largely inoffensive.
Shrek (2001)
Shrek II is not as good
Too anyone who has had this argument. Shrek II is not as good as original recipe Shrek. Original recipe Shrek is amazing and brilliant. Shrek II lacks the beauty, the grace, and the simplicity of the wonderfully creative Shrek 1.
Shrek 2 (2004)
Shrek 1 is better
Too anyone who has regard this argument. Shrek II is not as good as original recipe Shrek. Original recipe Shrek is amazing and brilliant. Shrek II lacks the beauty, the grace, and the simplicity of the wonderfully creative Shrek 1.
Rocky (1976)
Beautiful, low key movie
This movie takes a very understated view of its protagonist and its story. The magic of this movie is the moments between the "moments". Rocky's face as Adrian doesn't look at him. His trainer's last look at the bathroom that Rocky disappeared into. The people that populate this movie feel real. Rocky is authentically lacking the finesse that makes the following movies so gloriously cheesy (here's looking at you IV). What we have in this is a flawed character, built from the Philadelphia soul that framed him, shaped by the brutality of poverty, undercut by internalized misogyny, but, ultimately, a caring, good-hearted man who wants to be somebody. One of the greatest sports movies ever made.
G-Force (2009)
So stupid, so dumb
I don't like this movie. It's bland, tasteless, and brings nothing new to the table besides that there are guinea pigs who are superheroes or whatever. It isn't funny or charming. I hope I never see it again.
The Other Side of Heaven (2001)
Mormons Gonna Morm
It's fine. The movie is flat and it's not a very interesting character study nor does it show the character's growth in any way. It can be exciting and it can be fun, but ultimately, it's underwhelming and can easily be messed. Mormon and non- alike.
The Polka King (2017)
Jack Black is Beautiful
I love Jack Black and his performance in this is award worthy. He brings the heart and humanity to an unlikely and unassuming hero. The movie centers on his rise and fall and ups and downs throughout his life as a con-artist, who is kind at heart. Jack Black is the perfect man for the job as you empathize with his decision while he makes them and wish him well when he's convicted. Much akin to his superior film, Bernie, but this one is worth a watch.
The Lobster (2015)
Does Anything Matter?
I'm not sure if nihilism has ever been better reproduced in a film. The film begins, meanders along, does some murders, and then it's over. Was anything gained? Was anything lost? I'm not sure. But it's darkly funny and hilarious in every way. I wish more movies would feel this free to take leaps as it explores its singularly vicious world.
The King of Kong (2007)
Wild and Exciting
I'm not much for video games but heard so many good things about this doco. The characters are fun and the rivalry is wild. Billy is as wild of a character as you could hope for in a movie about such a niche audience. It's fun and breezy and definitely worth a watch.
Paddington 2 (2017)
The Perfect Movie
That's pretty much it. It's perfect in every way :)
Little Women (2019)
Perfect, Beautiful, Brilliant
I cried SO MUCH in this movie! Brilliant writing by Greta Gerwig with an equally brilliant performance by Saorise Ronan. All the actors are wonderful in this and it is a joy to watch. The movie is shot exquisitely and the music is top notch. It's funny, heartwarming, silly, heartbreaking, and wholesome. I would recommend this movie to anyone who has ever felt a feeling or had a notion to experience joy in a cinema. Greta Gerwig, you are an artist of the highest measure.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
This was a follow up to Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad is awful garbage and I hate it. This movie is a mess that's looking to be better than it is but it fails. The story is disjointed and the characters all feel like they are in different movies with different directions. The movie isn't silly enough to be a romp but it's not serious enough for you to feel genuine emotion. Some fun action set pieces and character moments but it rings hollow with this sloppy construction of a film.
13th (2016)
Do I not watch enough documentaries?
This movie made me cry and hurt my core. Racism is evil and I can't believe felllow humans have endured so much. Ava shines her light to allow so much humanity and empathy here. She focuses on the structure that leads to these horrifying events. The movie broke my heart. My one tiny complaint is that sometimes the interviews were framed odd and it took me out of the experience, other than that, the documentary is incredible. A must-see for anyone.
Storks (2016)
Harmless Fun
Andy Samberg is fun as his normal Brooklyn 99-ish character. The stand-our was Frasier as the head stork but everything else was pretty generic. I love Key and Peele's but which was fun, but the movie lacks originality or a more emotional plot to really connect you with the jokes and the emotion of the scenes.
Faust: Eine deutsche Volkssage (1926)
F. W. Murray is Incredible
Another master work from one of the masters. Great cinematography, fascinating ideas, and wonderful special effects. Loved watching this movie almost 100 years since its release and it still holds up.
Tiger King (2020)
Exploitative Documentary
Moving aside the misgendering of one of the people on this camp, the show is basically the reality TV show that it criticizes. Almost never willing to stick with a character to moment the show zips around too quick for you to care about any of them individually. They become the caricatures that the show-runners want them to be but they lack the depth that makes a documentary stand out from a work of fiction. Still though, I'll be damned if I said I wasn't entertained.
The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)
Not good
EXCEPT the line where the singer guy says, "It just comes from me La La La La La See?" That killed me.
But also, I hate the animated Lizzie thing with all my heart
Come Sunday (2018)
Fascinating Character Faith Study
Someone once said that "The best films about faith are made by atheists because the conclusion is already set in their minds". Come Sunday give Chiwitel Ejiofor another incredible role and he tears it up. Everyone in the movie is good but he is brilliant to watch. The movie works well enough and the first two-thirds are interesting while the last third does a sag a little. It's interesting and worth a watch.
Vice (2018)
An absolute mess
Christian Bale's hairpiece and makeup do some great acting in this confusing mess of a movie. The cast does well in this hyperkinetic, pseudo-real movie. I'm not a historian but the movie plays fast and loose with the facts and doesn't seem to care. It also never settles on a tone that it feels comfortable with as well as every scene being edited to a point that any moment of character introspection seems to be cut away from which forces the actors to do as much with the little time they have. The movie's a mess but it's an interesting watch but not a pleasant one.
The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)
It has some fun bits
Kevin Spacey being one something really takes me out of it and now that affects all the movies I watch with him. The rest of the cast is fun but the execution is sloppy and it tries to be a Coen brothers movie but is not witty enough or put together well enough for that to work. Love Jeff Bridges in this though, all the actors are good and put in solid performances but the movie is a bit of a dud.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
It's pretty alright
Not a movie that you spend a whole lot of time dwelling on but you're entertained for most of the run time. Fun performances and fun dialogue keep it from being too much of the same thing but it's enjoyable.
Frankenstein (1931)
Classic Horror
From the German expressionistic routes to its wonderful casting of Boris Karloff the movie is a joy to watch. Also, it's very short and that's a plus.
