The Cokeville Miracle (2015)
Powerful message presented a little confusing
My brother's wife had a sister held as a hostage in the school. So, the events personally affected me as I knew people who were involved. I want to bring up first, that I believe the miracles that happened and that there is a caring Heavenly Father watching over us. The message of prayer and angels are faith-promoting and wonderful. However, I found some elements a little confusing. I was a little confused at how Doris (the female kidnapper) would show doubt and maybe even disdain for her husband prior to the kidnapping but then go full in to do it. I also had a hard time with the main character's acceptance/non-acceptance of the miracles that occurred. Even with those two points confusing me, I felt the powerful message intended to by conveyed by this movie. I feel that the two short-comings I have described has made the movie good. I just feel that it could have been done a little different to make it great.
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
When Sci-Fi meets a Western
When I first heard about this movie, I was not sure it would be a movie I would like. If a movie has a "far-fetched" premise, it has to be well written and well acted to make it believable.
Essentially, the story is about aliens coming to a western US desert town in the late 1800s. The aliens are intent on taking over the earth. The local townsfolk with a tribe of Native-Americans are intent on stopping them.
The movie is violent with a lot of spectacular explosions. The writing is just enough to make the movie entertaining while the acting is great providing most of the value of the film.
This movie is OK, but not one that I will probably watch again.
The Mechanic (2011)
Dark and violent
Normally, I do not watch these kinds of movies, but I started it so I finished it. To be frank, I did not like this movie: it was too dark and too violent for me. The story starts with a hired assassin doing what he was hired to do. Then the story turns dark when the assassin is ordered to do something he doesn't want to do and then regrets it afterward. He then decides to seek revenge with another assassin he trains who also wants revenge.
The acting was good, the story line was a little implausible. I found myself saying, "Yeah, that's really possible!" sarcastically many times during the movie.
Bigger Than Life (1956)
"Leave It To Beaver" meets drug abuse
Admittedly, if this movie had been made today, it would be much different. However, since it was made in the 1950's, the family had a "Leave It To Beaver" feel about it--a mother at home and in a dress while doing housework, a son that adores his father and wants to be just like him, and a father doing his best to support his family. However, when the father, a school teacher, passes out from intense pain, he finds out that he has rare disease that is fatal. The doctor, though, has an experimental drug that he would like to use. The father agrees and he is put on cortisone. The experiment works and the father is able to return to teaching. Eventually, he becomes addicted and even psychotic which leads to some serious threats to the family.
I did not intend to watch this movie when it came on, but as it progressed I wanted to see how the film would conclude. At times, I felt frustrated that the wife did not do more to stop her husband from doing harm to himself and his family. But then, it was the 50's, an era that women were portrayed very differently from today.
