Hawkeye (2021)
Childish drivel
Besides the fact that this particularly short series merely felt just like a setup to establish another series for Hawkeye's young quite charismaless protege, this whole series bared little resemblence to its source material at all. Instead relying almost entirely on childish dialogue, jokes, scuffles, and storyline. It's basically somewhat of an insult to every MCU fan over the age of 12.
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour Presents: Carnage A Trois (2021)
How the mighty have fallen
I went into this episode completely expecting to enjoy it as much as practically all the others that have gone before. How very wrong i was. Because this truly is the most utterly inane and lazy outing the trio have ever done. Our guys are basically plodding along the whole programme just deliberately attempting to damage their vehicles by, for example, brushing them against branches and trees at a snails pace, etc. This episode really is best described as quite monotonous, boring, and "tired". With little or no effort put into truly entertaining us anymore. I am only really giving it 2 stars for the reason that there is some mildly interesting facts thrown in about the French and their cars. When Clarkson, May, and Hammond finally do retire, i hope they don't finish up their previously wonderful careers and outings with more banal shows like this mindnumbingly dreadful one.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Too miserable and anti-climactic
Although late to start watching this series, after having read the multitude of praise and high scores for it i decided to set aside my reservations on the premise, and just dive in. And now i am writing this review after viewing the first two seasons...
Firstly i will start with the positive: Really fantastic acting, and there is without a doubt a completely professional team behind the creation of this series.
Now for the bad: It is very slow paced indeed. And with the sparse comedic moments and the constantly serious themes that are the underlying backbone for this show, it makes for some very miserable viewing. What i would compare this to, is like reading a somewhat interesting article, where it is formatted in just one very very very long unbroken paragraph with no gaps or light at all. So the end result is that it teases you to keep watching, but it's almost tortuous to get through. And it doesn't ever leave you feeling properly "entertained".
Although first impressions from the synopsis might leave people suspecting it is still probably mainly a male-orientated action series. Mark my words, it is not. It actually has more akin with being a very dark soap-opera of sorts. And thus i would personally be far more likely to recommend it to female colleagues and friends rather than any male ones.
Perhaps indeed the serious themes of the series mean that it must continue to be the way it is... without any glorification aspects at all. But when to the viewer, the almost constant misery far outweighs any of the rewards gleaned by the storyline and characters. Then there is little or no actual enjoyment to be garnered. And therefore this series ends up just holding too little in the way of actual entertainment value. It is a times interesting, but ultimately and unfortunately it is also for the main part quite depressing.
How High (2001)
Dull as bongwater.
Making a comedy based around pot-smoking, for an appropriate audience that certainly doesn't want to have to concentrate too much, should not usually pose much of a problem for film-makers. But for the producers of this movie they sure have proved that this was a challenge they were willing to not only take on and accept, but then monumentally lose at.
Production-value wise it comes across as a quite polished and adequately accomplished piece, mostly on the whole. The only problem being, and it's a biggy.... is that the predicaments, scenes, and jokes just aren't all that funny. And that is even though they are unquestionably coming from the almost bottomless source-material pit known as "base-humour". Having seen the fantastic "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" and the absolutely superb and unmatched "Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" i know how good African-American base-humour comedies can be. In fact, Juice in the Hood is easily one of the best comedies i have ever seen. But this movie pales into absolute insignificance when compared to the non-stop bellylaugh quality humour of either of those. And therefore, with such high expectations, it only added to my eventual disappointment when i watched this film of mostly monotonous and largely childish fodder. Terrible!
