Another Earth (2011)
Two almost-made movies
This is not a science fiction movie. There was no science to explain the phenomenon. It is preposterous that another Earth would all of a sudden appear from nowhere. If it somehow could happen, there should have been tidal and orbital effects but none were even mentioned. It is also not an action movie. It is a very slow-paced drama. Not that there's anything wrong with slow-paced drama, but it was not what I was expecting.
The pluses: the visual beauty of some sequences and Brit Marling in the lead.
The minuses: There are two story elements that each could have had its own separate movie. As it is, neither got the development it deserved.
The ending did not do much to resolve anything.
In my opinion the filmmakers could have done better by making two separate movies with this material: a drama, and a science fiction.
My Summer of Love (2004)
Too much smoking
I have to preface by saying that I only got partway through it. The constant smoking was unnecessary. I got tired of looking at the girls smoke. I personally find smoking disgusting, so it ruined the movie for me. I kept hoping they would stop, but when they kept lighting up I gave up. That is really all I have to say about it, but since the minimum length of a review is 10 lines of text, I will continue. I also did not like the brother's religiosity. Religion is obsolete and I really wish that humanity would move beyond it. The scenery was nice to look at. It was well photographed. If you can tolerate smoking and religion, then you might like this. It was interesting to see the relationship between the girls develop because they are very similar in some ways and very different in other ways.
