As A Long Time Fan of the Series, I Hated This One
30 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Let me start out by saying that I first saw A Nightmare on Elm Street when I was 6. Ever since, I've loved every sequel (well, maybe except the 2nd). A Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite film of all time. That's not an exaggeration. It was not a perfect film, but it was suspenseful and gory.

The remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street was terrible.

You're hearing it from a hardcore fan. I was not someone against Platinum Dunes making the remake. I was fine with letting Robert Englund go. I was just excited to see Freddy once again on the big screen. I wish I hadn't. This was worse than the Halloween remake. Worse than the Texas Chainsaw remake. Worse than the AMITYVILLE HORROR remake. Stay far, far away.

You know you have problems when Freddy is revealed five minutes into the film. Not in a silhouette, but in full make-up. Right away we know the writers aren't looking to create suspense. That's what made the first one work, so why in the hell would we keep it here? It's never a mystery as to who or what Freddy is. Granted, with all his popularity, it might seem pointless to keep him hidden, but it would've made his character a hell of a lot scarier.

The acting is on par with the Twilight series. It's a one-note job for everyone available, even for Freddy. Robert Englund made it work because of his unpredictability. Jackie Earle Haley, a very good actor, is clearly given a poor script to work with. His one-liners aren't scary. They're not funny. They're just terrible. Haley had just as much to say as Freddy in his funny-days, but the difference here is how contrived his dialogue is. I watched "Freddy's Dead" right before the premiere to lower my bar for this film, and I found myself wanting to watch that one all over again. THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

The original didn't have the best actors by a long shot (not even Johnny Depp), but they felt real enough to root for them. Here, Rooney Mara and her good-looking cast create no sympathy. They just don't feel like real people.

The whole mystery IS FREDDY A GOOD GUY plot? Terrible (word of the day). I don't want to spoil anything but...come on...this is Freddy Krueger we're talking about. He was scary because we didn't know much about him. As soon as you throw in a back story, he's just any other killer. Remember when Freddy wasn't just any other killer? Good days...good days...

Oh, and SPOILER ALERT....there's only 4 deaths. But, unlike the original, they're poorly placed throughout the story. You shouldn't have to sit through 40 minutes of a phony, pointless mystery in order to NOT see anyone get killed. And the deaths themselves are unimaginative, perhaps the most boring of all the 7 films. Thanks for playing it safe, Platnium Dunes, that should rake in a few more target audience members.

The original Elm Street is beginning to show its age. Still, nearly 30 years later, the original is still more terrifying than this play-it-safe-and-by-the-numbers reboot. I'm appalled by the wasted talent of Haley. This new series won't draw in any new fans like the studio hoped. This new series doesn't cater to the original fans. This new series is...well, just like every other reboot in recent memory; it was created out of greed, not entertainment. As a lifetime Freddy fan, I find myself sad to say that this franchise is dead.

And my coupon for a free ticket I got in the blu-ray edition of ANOES isn't eligible at AMC theaters. I hate you, Platinum Dunes.

Worth the Hype
15 August 2004
My God, when this movie was first shown as a trailer, I couldn't wait. I made my own Freddy Vs. Jason shirt, and a whole bunch of other stuff. So, it's August 16th (I believe) and here it is. As I was leaving I was thinking, the movie blew my mind away.

First of all, the cast was relatively new to me, so I wasn't sure who would live. When I see horror movies with the big stars, the big guys usually succeed. I thought the cast was believable, and they really made me wish they wouldn't die. Jason was another hit, he was very scary (even though I'm a hardcore Krueger fan), and Freddy's makeup was well done.

Secondly, the plot was very good, and almost even smart. Fred Krueger has been sent to hell, and he wants revenge. He needs someone to strike fear on the teenagers of Springwood, Ohio. So out comes Jason Voorhees which seems as the perfect killer for Freddy. When enough people are dead, and Freddy can come back into the kids dreams, Jason starts going too far. Jason is not willing to give up his killing spree. As this is going on, the teenagers are making a plan to bring Krueger out of their dreams, so Jason and Freddy can fight to the death at Camp Crystal Lake, so if Jason wins, he will be home, and will have no reason to kill anyone else. But if Krueger wins... It was a great film, and worth the hype, but I had some problems. Number 1, Freddy should have been a little less chatty, I kind of hate that he has to be a comedic figure. Number 2, Jason had way too many kills, and Freddy didn't. Number 3, they left room for yet another lousy sequel.

So in conclusion, Freddy Vs. Jason is frightening, but also has some funny one liners and jokes. Freddy Vs. Jason is a must see, unlike Alien Vs. Predator. So, see it today.

Freddy Vs. Jason (R) gets *** stars in my book. 'nuff said

A Complete Letdown (Some Spoilers)
13 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Avoid this movie, please! I can't give a full review on a movie like this, so I'll try.

I did like one thing of the movie, the story. A group of archeologists head to Alaska to locate an underground Aztec Temple. But they soon find out that someone, or something, has already been there.

But, the story becomes too fast too soon. First of all, there are WAY too many characters, and in about a half hour, almost everyone dies. Then a character teams up with a Predator (who might have KILLED most of her friends) and fights of the aliens.

The biggest problem with Alien Vs. Predator is that it's PG-13. You don't see any gory deaths, they say the F-word once, and, sadly to say, it just doesn't seem as fun as it would if it was R. I'm telling the director now: Show The Director's Cut NOW!

This movie seems way to short, unlike Freddy Vs. Jason where the movie pans out and gives a better performance. Terrible ending; it's just another reason to spawn even lamer sequels.

Final Word: Alien Vs. Predator (PG-13) gets *1/2 Stars. 'Nuff Said ~ BAT

Best Film of the 80s
21 July 2004
When I did my last review way back on December 13th, I don't think I got my point across.

This movie is pure genius. With a low budget of $1,800,000, A Nightmare on Elm Street sure did great with the effects. All that blood and Tina being dragged on the wall, excellent. The acting was well done, and the dark mood (unlike the sequels) worked great and scared me through the whole movie. I liked the way that the movie started out as a bright world, and slowly turned darker.

This is definitely Wes Craven's best work. He made New Line into what it is today.

The story is simple for those who haven't seen the magic and pure horror of Elm Street. 4 friends are having terrible dreams of a dark man (Fred Krueger, not Freddy like in the sequels) who can kill you in your dreams.

The sequels were good, but ended up going a little bit lighter, having Fred Krueger becoming a joke who no one is afraid of now. But back in 84, he was more then scary, he was... well... REALLY scary. I give A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 stars out of 4. 'nuff said.
