Quaint..!
12 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Have patience and watch this one and trust me, it is worth a watch.

The plot is simple without any complicated twists. A story is set in a small American town. Lila (Poots) hires a hitman (Abbott) to kill her husband who ends up killing two other men including Bernadette's (DeWitt) husband who is secretly dating Sam (Bernthal), a small motel owner. The characters get involved with each others business and the rest of the events unfolds.

Jon Bernthal is the reason I got interested in this flick. He has delivered his best but Christopher Abbott has done a fabulous job here with his dark, belligerent, and whimsical character. A scene in a movie, where Elwood (Abbott) speaks with her mother on the phone, creates sympathy for an evildoer, another scene where Elwood beats two street junkies mercilessly suddenly gives a boost to the slow pacing of the movie. Director should have explored the character more.

Music is the backbone of this movie. It is terrifically unsettling. It constantly puts you in pressure even in scenes where no action is happening or nothing is going on at all. Still, it slowly builds tension and keeps you conscious until the end. Most of the movie is shot in dark. There are very few characters. The film sure has a mysterious setting and it works very well with the rest.

I have watched this movie four times and definitely watch again.

Hostiles (2017)
9/10
Harsh
12 April 2018
Hostiles reminded me of Bone Tomahawk, The Homesman, Brimstone, and The Revenant. I am not comparing it with these masterpieces. They are unique in their own way, and so is Hostiles.

Hostiles is brutal, sombre, and stern. Each character is in misery, struggling with the inner demons, adjusting with the rough ways of life. Some of the cope, others resign.

Soundtrack of movie is emotive, cinematography is harmonious with the theme of film. Powerful performances by Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, and Wes Studi.

The two quote/dialogue in the film I liked very much. The film starts with the quote from D.H. Lawrence - "The essential american soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. It has never yet melted". The other one - "Sometimes i envy the finality of death. The certainty. And I have to drive those thoughts away when I am weak".

Hostiles is not for everyone. We need more films like it.

Spinning Man (2018)
7/10
An (could have been better) enigma
7 April 2018
Evan Birch is a happily married man with two beautiful kids and a caring wife. He teaches philosophy at the university which also qualifies him as a wisdom bearer. With blissful family life and fulfilling career Evan could not ask for better. But, wait, it is not what it looks like, there is more to it. There is girl missing in town, a teen, studying at the same university Evan is associated with, and guess what? Evan is suspected for her disappearance. Police are interrogating him but how can a law-abiding citizen with beautiful family, friends and a satisfying professional life has anything to do with a teens disappearance?

Well, the protagonist here will confuse you about his nature, psyche, disposition, with strange observations, deed, and demeanor. Making you question his virtue and dignity. But at the same time his goodness and nobility creates also a positive vibe for him. And there is your 'mystery' connected with the protagonist himself. Did he or didn't he?

Spinning man is well executed as a mystery thriller, but it could have been better, regarding the strong narrative and cast. Based on the novel of the same name, screenplay is written cleverly, screwing with audiences minds and have them making assumptions while arranging events rapidly. Guy Pearce is fabulous concerning the difficult character he is playing. Brosnan also shines as a detective.

Overall , spinning man is worth a watch, if you dig ephemeral perplexity.

Columbus (I) (2017)

Slow yet moving..
24 December 2017
This movie will attract only specific audience who shares interest in slow pace storytelling and have patience to let things unfold serenely. The narrative writer is telling us does not comprised of series of rapidly moving incidents. Actually, we can sum up the entire plot in just one or two lines or ten seconds orally. The pleasure is in the natural conversation between the two lead characters and the wisdom they share with each other and apparently with us.

The story is about two characters, Casey, a talented girl with growing interest in architecture and Jin, a Korean middle aged man, son of a famous architect who also shares estranged relationship with his father. These both characters are stuck in Columbus, Indiana where they form a cordial relationship with each other which ultimately help them overcoming the obstacles they are facing in their respective lives.

This is Kogonada's directorial debut. He has done a perfect job delivering a sentimental drama with alluring theme of architecture. Haley Lu Richardson is someone to look out for in this film. John Cho has also performed his role very precisely. These both characters are unlike each other yet they witness a charismatic bond and form a implausible relationship. Because of the flawless chemistry between Richardson and Cho this movie makes emotive impact on viewers. Their instinctive dialog delivery and conversations make this drama more intense. Cinematography is really beautiful and felicitous to the movie theme.

This movie has a lot to tell and it is all about human relationship conquering racial, cultural and geographical boundaries.

Brad's Status (2017)
9/10
A guy with an inferiority complex
22 December 2017
Well, some viewers may find this movie negative and protagonist behaving like a complete pessimist but i find this movie incredibly poignant and disturbing at the same time but in the end it left me feel blissfully sad. Its a story of a guy in his forty's evaluating the choices he made in his life by comparing to his old friends glamorous and successful lives. Meanwhile he also tries to find solace in his son's demeanor. This movie is intelligently written and directed. Protagonist here is feeling degenerated and constantly thinking and seeing his life from peoples eyes. He is unstable trying to find conclusion for his misery. The characters around him are contributing to his pessimism and at the same time trying to make him feel lucky above all. Ben stiller is amazing in brad's character. He has delivered the discomfort of the character perfectly. This is one of his best performances. This movie taught me to never compare myself with others, never judge others success and lives, you may never know the real 'bitter' truth.
