The Strays (2023)
Quite enjoyable
All the main characters are struggling with identity.
Mum hates were she came from, she'll do anything to leave the problems she had behind including changing her entire identity. So much so it seems she almost believes the past never happened, if things didn't keep reminding her of where she came from.
The perfect kids are growing up and learning about their individual identities. They are not embarrassed that they are biracial. They are starting to explore that side of their identity. Their mum is trying to deny that to them as it is a reminder her identity is crafted from a lie.
Whereas Dione and Marvin are so desperate for an identity, for place to call home they are driven crazy by what happened to them. They lost their identity. They will do anything. They hate their half siblings but they are also in awe of them and the lives they lead. They try and influence their siblings into being more like them while wanting to be them and have their lives.
I'm voting it to be a 7 because only a couple of characters really stood out for me. Neve/Cheryl and Dione. I thought they were both amazing. With Dione you could see the crazy just bubbling underneath from the very start, but I didn't like Marvin much. His flipouts seemed almost too forced, a bit fake.
The rest just seemed a bit flat and a bit boring.
The end scene could have been better. It didn't need to be so rushed.
The Black Phone (2021)
Really enjoyed this film.
Many are complaining about a lack of character development for Ethan's character. But I think the movie was perfect.
The focus was on the kids. The story is about their fight for Finney to survive.
The movie isn't about why or who The Grabber is, or way he's the way he is. It's about how love and support can be successful.
Reading a lot of reviews people seemed to want something like Red Dragon. Where the movie is centered around the villain. Not the heros.
The violence is low key and not for thrills but simply part of the story.
I liked how he gave names to the dead, trying to see them as real people with feelings. The way the small amounts of information that was provided by each of the kids helped him escape. The support they provided him with.
I'm not a great writer so this might not be the best review but I strongly urge people to watch this without expecting a horror movie.
Wednesday (2022)
Wish there was less of her parents
I love this show - Jenna Ortega is amazing in this show.
Who managed to get all of the cast so absolutely perfect except for Gomez & Morticia?
Who then watched this back and thought yep great, perfect! The casting of young Gomez and Morticia was better.
Zeta Jones just doesn't have the right moves or speech pattern, I found it difficult to watch her on screen. Morticia has always been slightly mysterious and untouchable but beautiful, i didn't feel that with this character.
It's disappointing as she certainly looks perfect in the role.
Gomez came across as more slob than gentleman. Yes the suit and hair was there but the body posture etc was wrong. Where was the pizzazz that Gomez has, the style the flash?!
I loved that part of their relationship the coldness and the heat.
Definitely don't miss this as the rest of the cast is stunning!
But god a part of me is really disappointed.
The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself (2022)
So far some major plot issues
Two episodes in and there's plot issues already.
When the mother died in the first episode the son was clearly more than 10 months younger than his sister. She was walking and listening to headphones, he was a new born.
But then when it comes time to receive his powers he's only 10 months behind her in receiving his?
The sister wouldn't be be in a responding squad. She's training in an Academy. Why would a trained group of 'protectors' send new trainees to sort out problems - they would send experienced squads. She can't even shot straight...!
Hopefully there's isn't too many more plot holes.
Update: I've really been enjoying this so far but like FFS massive giant huge issue.! So the vial got broken but everyone else just needed a drop of blood. There's plenty left on Gabriel's shirt and hands to collect some of it up.
Monster: Episode One (2022)
Wanted to like it
I really wanted to like this, but this was on pretty boring episode to start the series with.
We already know the story, most watching would have seen pictures. There was no benefit to this episode other then trying to shock people. Bit hard to shock people when they already know. And it just dragged out for so damn long too.
I did enjoy the end of the episode. The father during the interview gave me the creeps. The way he held in almost every reaction he would have felt hearing about his sons crimes. You could feel the confusion from the cops quite intensely too.
I hope the next episode and those following are much more interesting.
Creep 2 (2017)
Creep
I'll start by saying I haven't seen the first movie but I will be watching it very soon!
I was bored and tired, looking for something to veg out with. - wrong movie.
This had my full attention the whole time. Both actors are amazing throughout.
I rated 9 as I was a tiny bit annoyed with the ending. The movie was original the whole way through, except for the ending.
Becky (2020)
Great Watch!
Well worth the time! Becky is amazing! I don't come to a movie expecting everything to be believable and the premise of a 13 year old girl kicking the crap out 4 blokes is pretty unbelievable but that was an awesome watch, you could feel Becky's anger.
Pet Sematary (2019)
Why change the ending?
The book was successful for a reason. Stephen King is successful for a reason. Why does some director think he can improve a story that was perfect to begin with?
Final Girl (2015)
Enjoyable Movie
The start and backstory isn't great. She should have been training years? What were they doing for the first 12?
Either way I really enjoyed the rest of the film. The bad guys are are interesting but easily disliked. Our hero lead female beats their arses to a pulp!! Watched this a couple of times now and surprised by the poor reviews.
Girl on the Third Floor (2019)
Could have been so good....
This movie could have been really good but the guy picked for the lead was so wrong. He's such an awful person I wanted him to die.
Mother! (2017)
Amazing!
Really enjoyed this movie. It had me watching until the end. I got the connection between mother and the house but didn't keep the entire meaning. A little googling soon explained it and everything fell together. I like it even more now nothing what it represents.
Beckoning the Butcher (2014)
Not too bad
Enjoyed most of this movie.
It was lacking in sections though. I liked watching the found footage.
The 'real time' interviews with the brother was terrible. He seemed so flat when speaking to the camera and his voice didn't portray the emotion he should have felt at times.
Psychic lady was cool.
The creepy doll looks like it was purchased 5 minutes before they started filming. That just made me laugh. It's was so clean and perfect, not a hair out of place. Could they not have taken 5 minutes to rub it in some dirt and poke an eye out???
Made me jump a couple of times and really held my attention during the scary spots. Not in the league of some other Australian horrors but a good watch!
World War Z (2013)
Enjoyable fast paced movie
The number of poor reviews are disappointing. I love a movie that makes you think and keeps guessing the whole way through, but sometimes I also love to watch a movie that simply keeps you entertained. World War Z does this. You don't need to think, you just need to sit back relax and enjoy as the movie throws plenty of action in your face. It's aim isn't to scare you, make you jump or gross you out, it's simply one cool action scene after another. The end wasn't flashy or full of action like the rest of the film, but it did have suspense and closed out the movie nicely.
Recommend watching!!!
Bereavement (2010)
Unsure
I'm not really sure if I enjoyed this movie or not. There were defiantly parts that I enjoyed a lot, but there were also parts that I disliked a lot.
So many things about this movie annoyed me. The victims, the constant screaming, the 'hero's' poor acting, the poor acting by the murderer and the talking to his dead father, the stupid police at the end.
But there were brief moments that had depth to them. The shot of Martin looking out of the factory at the end, Billy's father at the end waiting for Billy to return. The lack of expression or emotion by Martin, no matter what was happening at the time. The blood and gore.
What really got me was why Martin turned at the end. He had shown no interest in the murders and appeared more than uncomfortable about what was happening when the murders occurred, plus he allowed himself to be rescued and seemed to want to be rescued, but then he kills the girl who rescues him and then his 'teacher'.
Although i didn't enjoy this movie as much as i thought i would I still plan on watching Malevolence, as I'm interested to see where the director takes Martins character.
The Child (2012)
Enjoyable
I enjoyed most of this film. The first three quarters was good. I found it quite easy to guess who was the bad guy quite early on, but enjoyed watching how everything played out. I like the third party approach that they took to show the serial killers' view of the situation. I have to say I was very disappointed with everything following the climax of the film though. It was like they had no idea of how to end the film. Everything after this point felt tacked on. The adult characters explanation to Simon at the end about how everything happened felt forced. I think this could have been dealt with better through more flash backs of how it happened and allowing the viewer to making the connection instead of just spelling it out. The death of Simon at the end felt boring, like I'd seen this kind of ending a thousand times before.
