65 (2023)
Jurassic Worldbeater
This was an enjoyable, completely worthwhile visit to the cinema. There is a solid relationship between the two leads, and some great dinosaur action. We've been watching Dinosaur movies for more than 50 years, so I'm not sure why people are expecting a completely fresh take. You can sit there and work out what's going to happen, if that's your thing. Or, you can sit back and enjoy a good dinosaur action movie.
Yes, there are some silly things, like 65 million years ago, they had the exact same seat belts as we do now, but things like that are easy to let slide, as the movie manages to create tension, and excitement.
I'm looking forward to watching again with the kids.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Oh God it's cool
Westerns, the good ones, always sounded great. This is a wonderful throwback to those westerns that had soundtracks that really complemented the action. This doesn't just sound great it looks great too. The outfits and scenes are stunning, and the actors look amazing too. I love the spaghetti western style of focusing on a face for an extended time, as one expression changes into another, or just a slow narrowing of the eyes to increase the tension. There is a song by Zazzie Beetz which is just breathtaking. I really loved this movie.
Army of Thieves (2021)
Weird Science
It's such a great idea and so perfectly executed, except for shoehorning in the zombie references, which added precisely nothing to the the plot, characters or tension.
If you are old, you will spend the whole of the movie wondering why the guy in Weird Science is speaking German.
Linsanity (2013)
Played my heartstrings like Hendrix
You will love Jeremy at the end of this, and be so happy for his 'dream come true' moment. One of the great sports documentaries, that deserves such a wider audience
The Devil All the Time (2020)
Bunch of brits with funny accents
I'll confess, bad accents ruin movies for me. Poshos doing working class, Americans being Brits, and Brits being Americans. So with this movie I found myself getting drawn away from the action and wincing as the Brits accents criss crossed the Atlantic. Added to that, I really didn't care about the characters, none of which were developed. It is definitely worth seeing, as we are short on good movies in a Covid world, and this is just about a good movie
The Great (2020)
Oh it is
I just had this wonderful feeling at the end of episode 3, where I couldn't wait for the next episode, and feeling as if I'm part of Catherine's delightfully wicked inner circle.
Brilliant writing, cast, editing, everything
The Assistant (2019)
So you've seen Lost in Translation
Then you think all movies should be made like this, you are the minority that this film is aimed at. If, on the other hand, you like substance in a movie, then please don't waste your time and money. Just throw this in the bin, on top of Somewhere. Just for fairness, the actors are brilliant. They draw you in so you want to know more, but sadly there is nothing more to know.
Inside Game (2019)
An uncut gem
It's the Will Sasso show. I've never heard of the guy before, but he plays he slam dunks every other actor off the screen here. Cheating at sports is an enthralling subject, and a story of a cheating ref is just made for cinema. If you liked Uncut Gems, I'm pretty sure you'll love this. Either way, it's perfect for now, when we're all in lockdown, and you realise Netflix is full of trash. Enjoy!
The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
Best film of the year
If Hunt for the Wilder People was one of your favourites, you are going to love this. Enjoy!
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Disappointing finale to a finale
There's something about the Toy Story franchise. It's something just a little bit magical. It has that feeling that I used to get as a kid when a new Disney came out, that anticipation of knowing something special was going to come on screen. This is how it has been with the first 3 films. Toy Story 3 was always going to be difficult to reach or surpass, and so it has proven. While watching 4, I was reminded of Ralph 2, great sketches in an overall disappointing film. If you love the Toy Story characters you'll be left wondering why they were ignored in favour of new characters. Just don't go on there with expectations raised.... I may be a bit naive but Disney feels just like all the rest of the studios, a money making machine.
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
Cops do not talk like Shakespeare
If you like dialogue, then do not waste your time and money. I've met a lot of cops and they never speak like Doctors of literature. I wish that was the only stupid part of this film. It is, unfortunately, packed solid with stupid. If I cared about the characters I could sit through their interminable conversations, but I didn't care about them, at all, so their conversation really dragged. Oh, and Mr Director, I get your painful nod to Mel Gibsons answering machine message embarrassment, and you're an idiot for including that. Truly awful film
