Await Further Instructions (2018)
Some thought-provoking flick
I have some questions for this movie:
How do cables manage to bleed?
Can an axe manage to break glass or wood or is it more effective to look after a set of keys lost in the house?
Who kept the light on in the house after all the wreckage it went through?
Are babies born with the ability of reading?
Some movies really make us question ourselves.
Thoroughbreds (2017)
Fancy, stylish hitchcockian thriller
Cory Finley's 2017 film debut Thoroughbreds its a piece of refined craft and style which manages to merge between thriller and black comedy in a very satisfying way, creating a dark tonal pitch which is played along a smart and kinda sorkinian dialgue who takes us inside the conflicted and dysfunctional mind of its characters.
The Style its the Golden Rule
If anything can be said about this movie its probably that it has an amazing amount of style in each one of its elements, starting by the story itself: the tale of a young pair of millennial yuppies who are trying to get rid of a despisable rich man who happens to be the stepfather of one of them. Since the beginning of the movie you can feel that it's going to be a weird but funny journey
Following by the characters: Two young sophisticated ladies both intricately strange, whose own motivation is to get away with their plan no matter what, the both have two particular affected psyches which makes them a hell of a pair.
And finally the aesthethical: the aesthtetic factor is one of the most importants, since the first.shot you can see and hear that wonderful universe of the bourgeoisie, which is filled with flaws under his perfection-like mask.
Here is 7 reasons to watch Thoroughbreds:
1. Good Story
2. Neat Cinematography
3. Sardonic Tone
4. Fantastic Costumes
5. Crazy Music
6. Pretty Decent Acting
7. Lots and lots of Style
Forooshande (2016)
Don't see it if you're expecting typical blockbuster vengeance dramaturgy
Farhadi has done it again, he managed once more to prove that cinema is more alive now than ever.
If you're not familiarized with the other Asghar Farhadi's movies you're wasting your time; every time you choose one of these films you end up gratefully amazed, because they have so much worth in so many aspects that you just can't stop admiring them.
Here's three superb reasons why this is a wonderful piece of cinema: 1. Great Storytelling: The basic element for every movie to be successful is obviously entertainment, and we're not talking about cheap emotional Hollywood manipulation here, no no; this is not like Fast and Furious or Transformers crap. This is a very good example that shows that good cinema has not necessarily to be boring, we know movies are about emotion and excitement to; so this fine film takes us on a riveting ride that any viewer will suffer and enjoy at the same time.
2. Flawless Cinematography crafting: It has also, a very neat craft in all technical aspects: Script, Directing, Performances, Photography, etc. You can feel since the beginning that you're seeing a very well crafted movie and surprisingly it makes justice AGAIN! To their director's reputation as if it were not already enough with his other 4 previous movies. This is a real talent (Asghar Farhadi) you have to recognize here.
3. Political and Social Pertinence Critique: Real art has to be self-aware of his power to influence people and change society, so art-house movies have a very political subtext development. There's so many crucial subject matters and comments on this movie: Ethical and Moral limits, Revenge and Forgiveness, Women situation on Iranian society, Family Values, and so on. So this piece has a big background behind as always.
If you're not convinced yet to give it a chance, then it means you haven't read well, do it again if necessary.
Fuocoammare (2016)
Perfect Balance between Beauty and Pain
Fuocoammare AKA Fire at Sea is a 2016 Italian documentary feature that made it through the whole 66 Berlin International Film Festival to get The Golden Bear which is the most prestigious award of the festival, and it totally deserved it.
Documentary films can be known for have a harsh look given his nature of realism and objectivity, the visual element becomes secondary when it's Reality the substance of the discourse in the movie, and also having in mind the idea of the political possibilities that this tool offers is normal to think that aesthetics are not really relevant.
In this case, Fire at Sea achieves the perfect balance between both elements: Political statement or position from a very Objective point of view; and very beautiful visual development without affect to much the reality of happenings. We are talking about a spellbinding but bittersweet piece of work that it can really shock you both painfully and delightedly, it's captivating but thrilling at the same time a really must see feature.
Fifty Shades Darker (2017)
Cheap fairy tale for girls with daddy issues
My God, Where to begin? this movie was awful in so many ways that make a list would be such a waste of time. Anyway, I can mention the most prominent and substantial to me, starting by the most elementary piece which is the idea behind the whole story, in other words the subtext or message that the film delivers. This is no other thing but a teenager wet dream, founded on the most shameless shallowness and superficiality: Is the story of a naive young girl obsessed with the actual prototype of perfect spouse in every aspect important for the society, millionaire, handsome, fit, hard-sex addict, possessive and tough guy, so tough that he even resists an helicopter crash to come back without a scratch; so basically what the movie tries to unfold it's an attempt to tell a story where this girl keeps striving to catch this guy and engage him into a "serious relationship" without all of his flaws and addictions, in this process all of his evil ex's and spooky characters of his past will try to stop her in such predictable manners that you will have to throw some popcorn to others in theater to get amused if possible.
This links to the second aspect to bring up: The Script. This script is so dull and predictable that you would regret buying your ticket in the first 15 min, it's so dummy and felts so unreal that in some point gets laughable, the characters and dialogues are so shallow and the plot twists are far more predictable than fast and furious or any bad horror movie. Linked to that the actors don't help too much, it could be enough with that script but no, the director and producers want you to suffer in every possible way, they throw you a complete platter of mediocrity performances, overacted and fictitious, filled with nonsensical dialogues and cheap jokes.
In the technical aspect there's no much to say, it's another big studio fail, a nearly invisible treatment in the visual camp, mediocre photography, sound mixing and editing which is refilled with pop music to solve the problem.
In conclusion, 50 Shades Darker it's the perfect opportunity to get your daughter most desired obsessions emerged, or even your girlfriend can connect to the cheap-fake fairy tale of sex and passion this movie delivers.
