Killing Eve (2018)
In like a lion, out like a lamb
This series started off so strong! I appreciated the character development, the storyline and the actors. As season 1 gave way to season 2 and season 2 to season 3 and so on, I found the experience to be like that of a perfectly orchestrated night out, that starts off with all kinds of promise but as the evening wears on, you find the drinks flat, the food cold, and the company boring. As I researched the show, I learned that each season, the lead writer changed - which is unfortunate since the quality of the writing declined with each season. It's unfortunately the series couldn't have kept the writer from the first season throughout. IMO, watch seasons 1 and 2 and call it good.
Ripley (2024)
More concerned with cinematography than substance
I watched the first four episodes hoping it would get better, but finally had to call it. While the cinematography was beautiful, I had a hard time feeling any pull to keep watching. The series is drab, moves at a snail's pace and did little to keep my interest as the plot lines were dragged out well beyond what was required. This should have stayed a movie as those behind the series have not found a way to create an engaging bridge between the more interesting moments of the series. It was almost as if the series flat lined for most of the air time, with a few flashes of life intended to keep viewers engaged. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for me!
Griselda (2024)
Waaaaay too many subtitles
While I am intrigued by the "true story" nature of this series, and seeing Sofia Vergara in a dramatic role, I found the extensive use of subtitles to be too much. I appreciate that the original players spoke Spanish, but, it's possible to create the same effect in the first 20 minutes of a show without belaboring the point. This series primary language is labeled as an English and yet the overwhelming majority of the dialogue is in Spanish!! I'm not interested in reading subtitles for 6 hours.
If this was dubbed over in English, I may be willing to give it another shot but as it stands today, I won't be watching this series.
Betty White: A Celebration (2022)
Betty deserved better
Despite the laundry list of celeb appearances, only a handful of B and C list celebrities appeared repeatedly. The field focused almost exclusively on Betty White's career with a casual mention of her devotion and love of animals. If one is making a film celebrating the life of a cultural icon I would have expected FAR MORE about her life off camera, including things that brought her joy. This film makes it appear as though Betty's nearly 100 years of life were only about for-profit work in front of the camera. What a deeply disappointing bookend to the decades long career of a talented, warm-hearted, and authentic human being. The producer should be ashamed of himself.
Anything for Jackson (2020)
Boring and cheesy
Seriously this movie is 100% predictable and the "horror" is laughable (this from a true suspense-a-phob). For those squeamish with horror, fear not! You'll be more entertained than you are "shocked" or scared.
