Stan & Ollie (2018)

Brilliant performances by Reilly and Coogan
27 February 2023
I've seen this movie 3 times. Each time I'm amazed by how these 2 iconic cinematic characters are brought to life by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. The screenplay is so moving that I cried more with each viewing...the love shown was pitch perfect. I grew up watching Laurel and Hardy on television, so their memory is sharply etched into my consciousness. Between the superb acting and the make-up (for Mr. Reilly's Oliver Hardy), it brought me back to those moments of excitement each time I heard the Dance of the Cuckoos coming from my Dumont TV. I consider this movie a gem, and like odes to Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, I feel gratitude for the art and laughter these creative geniuses brought to the world and for the people who have extended their legacy through films such as this.

I have no reservations about giving this movie a 10

First of all, let me say that the production design of this film is amazing. Without CGI they recreated mid 20th century nyc with verisimilitude if not absolute fidelity. The photography is mesmerizing and I'm so grateful to have come across this Mazursky gem while scrolling through my cable movie channels. I haven't read the Singer novel, so I can't make comparisons, but I'm imagining that Enemies, a Love Story would stand alone as a true work of art. The complex emotions and motivations that drive the stories of theses wonderfully written and acted characters in the aftermath of the Holocaust are effectively portrayed. I laughed, I cried, I was moved. If you can find it, watch it!

French Brockmire

I loved the snarky, self absorbed celebrity in reduced circumstances that Hank Azaria created along with the deadpanning young assistant that he played off of. Huge in France does it well, too. No longer an original concept, but, entertaining nonetheless.

i've watched this movie several times & don't get tired of it.

i was completely unaware of this movie when it was in theatrical release.i stumbled across it while watching on cable, and was immediately entranced.although it is edgy and modern, it has a similar allure for me as "a thousand clowns"(Jason robards,jr).new york city is a principal character(i admit that the locations in lower Manhattan are my old stomping grounds)which will usually add to the appeal of any movie. following REDMOND as he wanders from his lower east side home to bizarre beer distributor wars to incomprehensible black market deals to the haunting allure of an alcoholic flight attendant 'guardian angel' is funny, compelling, and repeatedly watchable. corrigan's efforts in front of and behind the camera are admirable.not to be missed is James woods' UNCLE SAM. he's a crazy incorrigible hustler who adds a wistful element to a lowlife character.
