Terrible
29 June 2022
I was bored to death - this movie was about 1 hr and 34 minutes too long. Acting was amateurish, plot very thin, I basically hated it. Stephen King has to be puking as he goes to the bank - not his fault really.

Weak, not well done
1 June 2022
Please tell me this is the last of this series - there have been 2 great movies - The Dark Knight (heath Ledger) and Joker (Joachim Phoenix). The rest of them were a waste of time. Cat Woman in this one is pitiful - the only character I really liked was Riddler. Trite, cliche ridden, sorry my Granddaughter recommended it. Overall pretty sad.

Wonderful Adaptation
20 March 2022
After the first episode I was concerned that this would merely be an action series. I am glad it was not and that I stuck with it. The obstacles and predicaments the travelers are involved in are interesting and exciting (even though we know they have to get out of them.). The value of the series is in the character development of the three protagonists, Fogg, Fix, and Passepartout. Fogg's back story is especially interesting.

At one point, Miss Fix, a journalist, realizes that this story (which she is writing as she journeys with Fogg) is not an adventure story at all, but a love story. If you are looking for hard core realism, look elsewhere. This is a story which will celebrate overcoming the past, sticking to your task, finding faith in your friends, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

I hope that this series is watched by young watchers who might be inspired to read the original book (or at least a less tedious adaptation). I fear that reading the classics has been replaced by streaming videos, YouTube, video games and other mindless pursuits. This one is worth resurrecting.

SUPERB!!!
12 February 2022
Friends I trust told me the new version of WSS was great. I'm glad I listened to them! I love the 1961 movie, and worried about the remake falling short. My fear was unfounded. The '61 movie represents the late 50's: clean, well scrubbed, shining faces - glamorous lead actors and actresses. The 2021 movie is a movie for today - with gang actors who really looked like a gang. Maria and Tony are perfect - innocent and madly in love - they looked like they were really in love. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer looked like they were acting like they were in love (well, they were.). The casting in the new version surpassed the original in almost every instance. And, the actors and actresses actually did their own singing.

While I love '61's "America" on the rooftop the street version was better. The choreography, while similar to the original was more crisp and just felt more "authentic." Rita Moreno was great in both movies (she still can sing), but Ariana DeBose blew it away as Anita. If she does not win an Academy Award there is definitely something wrong (well of course we already know that!)

The only song I liked better in the original was "Office Krupke."

And kudos to Spielberg for 1. Casting Latinos in their roles; 2. For NOT casting politically correct but not ethnically correct actors and actresses in the movie; and 3. For not lacing the dialogue with the "F word" as the only adjective used in the movie.

In conclusion, the 1961 version is great, the 2021 version superb!!!!!

Just a set up for season 2
17 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show had a lot going for it - interesting story line - good flashbacks - good acting BUT it was basically a set up to make you watch season 2. The producers of The Killing learned not to do that the hard way - and I hope it is true for "Son of Yellowjackets" as well. I will not watch season 2 - what if they decide to string us along til Season 3? It's too bad.

The Ripper (2020)
6/10
Could have been great - but . . . .
7 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching "The Ripper" on Netflix. Very captivating story told in an effective, if not plodding manner. The obvious agenda of the documentary "Let's give focus on the victims and not just the killer" is proper and appreciated. But it appears that the agenda got in the way of some necessary elements. At the end when The Ripper has been id'd and convicted, and the bungles of the Yorkshire police exposed, we do not get the status of the killer. As it turns out, he died Nov 2020 from COVID-19 - one of the few justified deaths at the hand of the pandemic virus. But, I had to Google it to find it out. We should have been told what happened to the scum. The conclusions reached about the critically inept approach of the Police (he must have a Geordie accent - and 'the dead girls' not a prostitute, ignore her, our guy only kills prostitutes') was re 'spot on.' And they spent millions of dollars chasing after fake letters and an audio recording. They were clearly blinded by their prejudices, etc.

Two other points: this dramatically illustrates the lunacy of the "no capital punishment" belief. If anyone deserved the death penalty, this piece of crap did. But no, he was allowed to live for 35 years in a soft existence denied his victims. And, of course the British taxpayers funded his "retirement."

But, the most ridiculous part of the documentary was the reaction of the feminist community who were outraged that they had to be protected by men - and "Why can't we walk the streets at night, if we want to?" mentality. The answer was obvious: because you may get slaughtered as these women were. I know that we have a different, more equitable situation concerning women today (although there is not doubt a ways to go) but such stupidity was laughable. Of course this stupidity is not the fault of the makers of the documentary. In conclusion, we were glad we watched the documentary, we knew very little about "The Ripper" before this. But the ending was mismanaged.

The best show of 2020
19 May 2020
A child meets her future; a friend betrays his friend; a girl savors a moment in time; a family experiences a great loss; a father fails to protect his family - these are the themes in "Loop." It is sci-fi, but without the action of spaceships, laser guns and threatening empires. This is human drama within a subtle backdrop of technology and impossibility. The writing and acting is superb. The mood is solemn, somber aided greatly by a beautiful, but melancholy score. Everything about this show exhibits restraint - very unusual in today's entertainment.

Beautifully shot, the stories take place in a small rural town - and each episode focuses on one individual, but intersects with other characters you come to know and care about. Yes, it is sci-fi, but way more than that. Although a cliche, it explores life, people's aspirations, disappointments and just keeping on with it.

The setting is intriguing - "looping" technology into the the lives and structures of the people and the town. Machines almost achieve a humanness. They seem to be merely observing the people as they go through their lives. The technology achieves almost a sympathetic posture as if they are always ready to help, but will not intervene unless asked. (Watch it and you'll see what I mean.)

This is the best series I have seen in ages. I highly recommend it. DonB

Time Trap (2017)
1/10
LAME - Stupid - Putrid - Childish - need I go on?
23 September 2019
I have seen some good time travels movies lately (Travelers, AO, If I Hadn't Met You (Hulu). So, I thought, why not Timetrap? (Netflix) which has a 6.6 rating on imdb (you have to be kidding me - what were all of you on drugs when you rated this show?). Nevertheless, I wasted 1 hour and 15 minutes of my life on this movie, which should have been called Timecrap.

Lame premise, sci fi story which was could have been written by a middle schooler, weak man from the future vs stupid looking cavemen, 3 girls and a guy actually discussing the option of staying in a cave the rest of their lives (of course, no food or water) - these 4 were really deep thinkers. And these were the highlights of this piece of excrement. (this is as close as I could come to a turd)

This was so bad I started fast forwarding with only 15 minutes left - and I gave up with 12 minutes remaining. This is the worst movie I have seen since Nicholas Cage's MANDY, which was so bad that if Nick was paid more than $100, he was overpaid. I don't write many reviews any more - only truly wonderful or dreadful movies. This one gives "dreadful" a bad name.

Stay away - you will thank me. DonB

Better than you think
2 February 2019
I am not a sci-fi guy, but this one was well done - grabbed my attention and held it throughout. Two main characters - really likable - and a movie filled with hope. I really liked the ending. Very surprised about the negative reviews - maybe they are Tom Cruise fans. This one surprised me - some very thoughtful stuff in this one - again maybe that's why it is rated so low.

. . . and you thought "boyhood" was awful
24 January 2019
We heard the hype - saw the nominations - heard that it was a groundbreaking work of cinematic excellence , , , so we watched it. Actually I watched about 20 minutes and my wife watched a little more. I was a tiny bit interested when the Dad comes home and fits his oversized car into his undersized garage (where was the space for the lawn mower?) But I had to really stretch to be interested in even that scene.

At about the 15 minute mark, I was thinking: "Does my wife like this? Is that possible?" Little did I know that she was just wondering how long it would take for one of us to spring up and yell "This is crap - I'm done with it." Fortunately I did not have to display my cinematic ignorance by doing that - I was saved by a call from a telemarketer - I saw that the call was from Waukegan Illinois - so I turned to my wife and said:"I have to take this." 45 minutes later I finally left the telemarketer off the line and was relieved when I went back in and saw that the film had disappeared from our tv.

When the "signature shot" is clothes drying on a line, you know you are in trouble.

All I can say is a movie has to have something going on beyond panning and great cinematography - on it is just a travelogue. This one has little to offer - if you like this film - hurry and watch "boyhood" and boring piece of garbage which took 12 years to make. Both of these films are painful to watch and a monumental waste of time.

Halloween (I) (2018)
6/10
So - so at best
29 October 2018
Halloween 2018

I told my son-in-law as we were approaching the theater that I wasn't expecting much - and, sadly, I was right. Even with John Carpenter's help, still great music, and thankfully ignoring the 42 remakes, Halloween 2018 was ok at best. The parts I liked best were the homages to the original: three girls walking down the street from home; pinning the young man to the hall wall with the butcher knife; reprise of Annie's song as she waited for the original Michael to strangle and kill her, and a few others.

But there was no Dread or Tension - hallmarks of Halloween I. In the original, Michael stalks Tommy as he walks dejectedly from school after having his pumpkin smashed. He peers from behind the hedge and then among the wash hanging outside Laurie's window. And the music, which I believe was the best part of H I. The music was there in H 2018, but was not used to good effect. H 2018 was not creepy of scary or anything even close to the classic.

But the movie was not the worse part of the evening's experience. The audience was. In a testament to how far our society has decayed, two late teen, early twenty year old girls had their sister/daughter, who was at best 6 years old, in the movie!! Just shows anybody can pump babies out, but it takes a little bit of common sense and parental judgment to raise children. But that was not even the worst for me.

In the movie, Tommy who is a very innocent little boy in H I is replaced by a street-wise, foul talking little boy (again about 6 yrs old) who repeatedly used the F word as he talked to his babysitter. And the audience thought it was hilarious!!!

I have continue to resist thinking that our society is doomed as I watch the ridiculous glorification of actions deemed obscene and sinful just a decade or so ago, each day on the news. But maybe I should stop resisting. Maybe we are doomed.

Power corrupts . . . . absolute power . . . .
17 December 2017
I'm surprised I liked this one as much as I did. I'm not a fan of today's 30's something "comedies" which are all about sex, drunkeness and vulgarity. Sure glad this one did not follow what is popular today.

Instead we have an interesting film which teaches us a lot about people - especially those who overcompensate for their humdrum lives. Anne Hathaway is a underachieving, out of work writer who is living an unfulfilling life in NY. She leaves her boy friend and returns home to small time mid-West.

At the same time a giant monster attacks Seoul, South Korea. She soons discovers her connection to the monster. Jason Sudeikis is a former boyhood friend who tries to help her out - at least initially.

Now, this story is not about monsters (look to the wretched "Transformers" series for that). Nor it is about love - well sort of it is - aren't they all? It is a homage to the Japanese Godzilla movies of old - but only in the setting and plot device. It is essentially a story about power - and how it affects and changes people. For other studies on this subject, watch "Breaking Bad" the gold standard on the subject, or just study any of the 20th century Presidents. What took "Breaking Bad" several series to present, this film does in less than 2 hours.

The meaning behind the story (power corrupting) is why I liked the film. If you are a literal person - stay away, you will not like this one. If you are one who cannot "suspend your disbelief" - don't bother. But if you like a film which has a challenging plot device and explores relationships and the uses of power, this one is for you.

I despise fantasy and am luke-warm about sci-fi, but this one is a winner. Give it a try, but don't say I didn't warn you.

One of Ken Burns' best
4 December 2017
This short documentary chronicles the lives and work of Waitstill and Martha Sharp – dedicated Unitarian ministry couple who worked at great peril to themselves in Prague and France to help Jews and others escape destruction at the hands of Hitler's Nazis.

This is a typical Ken Burns documentary with outstanding recollections of the many of those who were saved interspersed with letters etc. from the Sharps. The music, re- enactments, and narration make for a very dramatic and tense retelling of the exploits of this couple. And, as in all his films, the story being told is more than the story itself. It delves into how some people are willing to risk their lives and fortune for others; how families were willing to give up precious time with their families for others; and, of course, how Hitler's regime was the embodiment of evil on the earth. It also touches on the fears of immigration and blatant racism prevalent in 1940's America.

JOHN 15:13 was in my mind as I watched this file: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." The Sharps did this out of a love for humanity, a commitment to social justice and because someone had to do something about the situation.

This is a very dramatic and tense story which is portrayed in the most effective fashion by Burns. The rescue of Mr. X (unidentified to this day) from Prague in 1939 and the rescue of numerous French Jews across the French Alps into Spain are as suspenseful as any modern movie. And, of course, this was true.

The bravery and commitment of this couple put to shame the French capitulators who were hunting down their own countrymen to turn them over to their conquerors. It also put to shame their own America's leaders who knew about the atrocities of the holocaust, but decided to just focus on a military victory as the quickest way to send the suffering; therefore, doing nothing to impede the genocide of the Jewish population of Europe.

In addition, the scenes of the Czechs shipping their children off to escape the clutches of the Nazis was poignant and extremely touching. As I watched this, I was wishing that today's younger generation would see this and get a sense of how life can be and how important it is for Christian values and freedom to reign in our country.

This is not Ken Burns' best or most well-known film. But it is one which needs to be seen. If it only inspires a few people in America today to do "the right thing," it will have met its purpose.

You can find the film at the library or watch it on line at:

m4ufree.tv/

I hope you watch it. You will be moved by it.

Balanced slightly to the left
10 October 2017
I very much enjoyed Ken Burns' recent effort "The Vietnam War." On such a subject it is very difficult to be perfectly balanced and this one was slightly left. I believe that the selection of the veterans who were interviewed could have been better balanced by a vet who did not eventually side against the war. Nevertheless, those who were selected were articulate, interesting, and very honest in depicting their war.

The production of the documentary is excellent - with great utilization of the music of the 60's and 70's as a highlight of the production. In many situations, the music seemed to be written for the scenes being depicted.

Peter Coyote is outstanding as the narrator. His calm, clear narration made the entire story very understandable and dramatic.

I totally understand those veterans who fought in the war being outraged that they were not given "equal time." I have discovered that at times those people who are living through an event (like Vietnam or WWII) know what they experienced, but not necessarily what was going on beyond their experience, at least at the time. That was true of my Mom & Dad who lived thru the Blitz and D-Day in WWII England, but actually knew less than I did about the war as a whole. In no way am I minimizing what they or the Vietnam vets went through - I'm just trying to put it in perspective.

One of the highpoints of the documentary were the interviews of family members whose boys had gone to war and the thoughts and conversations the Presidents had - where they expressed their beliefs about the war (particularly that it could not be won.) The Presidents demonstrated once again that conscience and morality and what is best for the county make rare appearances in the decision making of politicians.

This just reinforced what I see every day from Congress - on both sides of the aisle.

Finally, this documentary was very long. If it could have been shortened by 3 - 4 hours, it would have been better. In spite of all of this, Ken Burns' documentary is a good addition to the documentation and explanation of why Vietnam happened, and how it happened.

Treme (2010–2013)
9/10
Another David Simon gem
13 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Watching "The Wire" made it mandatory that I watch "Treme." David Simon (The Wire and Treme's show runner) is a genius. We were in New Orleans when this was first being advertised - and I thought "what a bore." Just goes to show you how wrong first impressions can be. But you do have to hang in there with it.

Your initial introduction to the characters is not always positive, but by the end you love almost all of them (with the obvious exception of the unbelievably corrupt and sadistic New Orleans Police Department, and the opportunistic, corrupt developers, bankers and politicians.) At least Ray Nagin gets called as the ridiculous, corrupt crook that he was (and still is, as far as I know.)

Naturally there is Bush bashing throughout and even more predictably hysteria with Obama's election in 2008.

The characters and their stories take a while to develop, but once they arrive, they are compelling. The acting and writing is superb. Finally I have seen Kim Dickens in a role I loved as the N.O. chef who epitomizes the struggles that her city has throughout her career. (As far as I am concerned - skip her other roles - especially in the putrid "Fear the Walking Dead.")

Kim, along with Melissa Leo (the lawyer who will not give up trying to expose corruption in the NOPD) and Khandi Alexander (a bar owner who has a world of trouble through the show) make a trio of the strongest and most likable women I have seen in a drama. This is achieved without a hint of political correctness - which was very much appreciated.

John Goodman has a short, but very impactful, role as Melissa Leo's husband. His short role in the drama had to be due to other acting commitments. His departure was a loss for the show.

Be prepared for a lot of music. The back story of "Treme" is certain residents' quest to keep the musical heritage and traditions of New Orleans alive in the face of government and business which are doing their best to rebuild N.O. in the image they want to see. The music plays a critical role in that story line - and in fact becomes almost a character in the drama. I do not like jazz, but after hearing so much of it on the show I have come to appreciate and enjoy 'New Orleans' jazz. The street musicians are especially engaging and entertaining. The other thing to be aware of is the vast majority of the songs written through 2/3 of the drama were about New Orleans and Katrina.

The cast of actors looks like a "who's who" from "The Wire" with seven actors crossing over. The best one is Wendall Pierce who played "Bunk" Moreland in "The Wire" and surpasses that role in "Treme" as Antoine Batiste. He is the trombone player who plays an important role with the young people in the high school band he leads and in his family. He becomes one of the key characters in the story and elicits great admiration, in spite of some of his flaws.

Although this is not for everyone, but if you give it a fair shot I think it will grow on you - it certainly is worth it. My wife Cindy, and I were very sad when it was over.

Shake me - wake me - when it's over
12 July 2017
The 4 Tops had it right in 1966 when they sang this song - except this film was not made until 2007!! How did they know? Seriously people a 7.3 rating? Granted the acting was good and the soundtrack appropriate, but classifying this film as a thriller, as my 3 three year old grand daughter would say "is Ridkolous."

The plot is slow, the actors talk slow, they move slow, the music is slow, the "action scenes" take literally seconds. (so I guess you could say they were not slow) I understand that things which occur off screen can take on greater depth and imagination, but for that to occur, something has to happen. And not much happens throughout the movie. And amazingly the director must have thought at times too much tension was building, so he even stepped it down a notch or two with even slower music between scenes. For instance, during one scene, a car drives up to the house!!! Now wait a minute, modern audiences can only take so much!! please let us catch our breath!

Now some may see great existential meaning in the film - that this gives depth and meaning to the Southern farm experience, etc. etc. etc. Well the only thing I can say to them is Hans Christian Anderson called "BS" on that many years ago with "The Emperor's New Clothes."

And then finally, there is the dialogue. Can it be true that people from Arkansas only speak in 2 or 3 word sentences?

Well if this is your cup of tea, good for you. As for me and my household, we place this one among the notables of snoozdom: "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", "Cache", and the all time snoozer: "Boyhood"

The Wire (2002–2008)

Amazing show
4 July 2017
I know I'm late to the party, but HBO's "The Wire" shares the same place in TV lore as "Breaking Bad" and "The Sopranos." (shame on you if you have not seen them). This gritty crime story has it all: despicable politicians, despicable police, great police, despicable drug gangsters, gangsters you love (Omar), people in love, couples breaking up, children you are pulling for, schemers - manipulators, interesting technology, interesting - complicated plots, the greatest anti-hero of them all Jimmy McNulty - played by Dominic West, the most lovable drug addict of all time - Bubbles played by Andre Royo, and the gangster who we will always be rooting for - Omar as played by Michael Kenneth Williams.

This is a story of betrayal and redemption, corruption and political expediency - with plenty of foul language, head shots, shotgun blasts and dead bodies.

It takes a commitment to watch all 5 seasons - 60 episodes long total - and some seasons are better than others. But it is worth watching Seasons 1- 3 (which are great) to get to Seasons 4 & 5 which are outstanding.

You can read other reviews for more details, but I say if you like gritty crime dramas - stop watching whatever you are watching and watch "The Wire." NOTE: it is rated 9.3 - higher than the Sopranos 9.2. I think that is about right.

Interesting plot - well done
25 April 2017
I saw the world premiere at the 2017 Florida Film Festival and was very impressed with the idea of the film - its presentation - and impact.

Jack Zeller, played very effectively by Christopher Denham, is a psychologically damaged photographer back from Afghanistan. He is evidently suffering from PTSA and is trying to get back to doing what he loves - professional photography. As an encouragement, his fiancé, Claire, buys him a vintage (WW II era) camera (naturally made in Germany.)

One chilling aspect of the camera is that a camera repair store announces that "this camera is not capable of taking photos."

Nevertheless, Jack gets a gig working for her real estate company and takes 10 rolls of film of various settings and properties with this "unworkable" camera. When the film is processed, there are surprising photos which I will not describe (you can imagine since this is a horror film.) How he reacts and tries to deal with these photos is the tension in the movie. The plot is different, well conceived and exciting.

The music and sound effects add measurably to the feel of the film and effect of the events being portrayed. Overall it is an excellent effort from first time director Aaron B. Koontz. I look forward to future efforts by Mr. Koontz. If you get the chance to take in "Camera Obscura," please do - very worthwhile.

Goodbye World (2013)

Makes one good point (unintended)
13 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I like apocalyptic movies - I like movies with human interaction/conflict - and I liked some of the things about this movie, but not much.

This is the story of a pretty diverse mixture of past friends who happen to be getting together (after 8 years) in a remote cottage in Northern California - right when a nationwide attack which takes the power grid down - and civilization goes to crap. Fortunately, James, the owner of the cottage, is a prep-per who has done a good job of preparing for the apocalypse.

The stress and contentiousness among the friends mimics "The Turning Point." but in a superficial and trite way. (If you have not seen "The Turning Point," you should.) The past catches up very quickly to the group as old passions, wrongs and new truths emerge as they try to deal with their current situation as well as the past. The dialogue is pretty hollow and many of the sub plots are predictable.

So what was the one good point made in the movie?? ? Those who do not have the ability to protect themselves are at the mercy of people with guns. Once again, the naive sheep are at the mercy of the wolves and need a sheep dog. If you do not know what I am talking about - here is an excerpt from Dave Grossman's article on sheep, wolves, and sheep dogs: (Google Dave Grossman sheep, wolves and sheep dogs).

My guess is the producers of the film were not trying to make this point, but it is an inescapable conclusion considering their predicament.

The movie closes with everyone getting together and the communal family thriving. Not very likely or realistic.

The best since Dawn of the Dead - remake
25 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The first big budget zombie flick from South Korea. "Train to Busan" is terrific.

Starting slowly like most zombie movies (something is wrong) it takes off and does not stop until (SPOILER ALERT) almost all the main characters have been dispatched. This is non stop action and excitement for almost the entire 2 hours. Just when the zombie genre is on life support ("The Walking Dead " Season 7 is dying and killing all of us in the process), the Koreans have shown that there still is life in the genre.

There are several new elements: (SPOILER ALERT II) most of the action takes place on a train; the heroes have to fight and trick their way to other survivors; the zombies are terrific - a lot of weird jerking around (reminiscent of the priest in the opening scenes of "28 Days Later"); lots of zombies cascading through windows and falling over each other; an amazing train escape sequence you have to see; and numerous other very creative takes on the "Zombie chasing humans" device.

But this is more than just wild zombie action. This is a story about self interest; caring for others; being willing to help; a father's redemption with his daughter, and the struggle between good and evil (naturally.)

I have not enjoyed a zombie flick in many years - this one makes my all time top 10.

If you are a fan of the genre, this one is a must see. You will have a blast.

Disappointing
15 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Being a fan of murder mysteries (especially British) I anticipated that "Marcella" would be on par with others I have loved (Luther, Broadchurch, The Missing). I was sadly disappointed.

The characters, story line, and crimes were interesting - in fact the acting was good. But the writing is lazy. SPOILER alert: when the great reveal happens in the last episode, we discover that the killer murdered a number of other people (pretty much chosen at random) to mask the fact that he wanted to kill the one person he was after. Very weak writing - I was let down. Not the kind of writing I was used to.

In addition the killing of the little girl seems to have been inserted into the show to provide a clue that eventually got the killer caught. There was no other connection to the little girl at all.

It is normal for shows like this to have a lot of ambiguity and confusion throughout - after all you do not want everything revealed or it would not be a mystery. But in this one, things are so unclear that I actually stopped caring.

In the end I was just glad it was over. Believe me, your time is better spent on other dramas.

Luther (2010–2019)

A lot of weirdos in London
2 March 2017
A deeply flawed detective - enigmatic, fascinating women - clever writing - intricate dialogue - and some of the weirdest bad guys you will encounter - that's "Luther" - the amazing BBC crime drama on Netflix.

Idris Elba stars in the gritty 4 season show which breaks with a number of conventions for shows of this type - especially the length of the seasons. The shortest season (season 4) is only 2 episodes long, but they managed to pack a lot of drama, intrigue and surprises in these 2 episodes - season 4 may have been the best of the series.

DCI John Luther is a highly intuitive detective who continually skirts legality as he goes about corralling some of the crazies who make up the London crime scene. There is blood, abduction and internal conflict- both within Luther and his police department. But Luther is always seemingly on top of things. While deeply conflicted with an explosive temper, Luther uses intuition and projection (thinking like the killers) plus his invaluable Benny (the IT expert - all of these shows have one)to discover the identity and motive of the latest killer by looking at the past, establishing motive and determining what the killer is seeking. Along the way, he has to deal with the fact that most of the people who are close to him, or that he loves, end of dead.

But the highlight of this show for me is Alice Morgan - the quintessential genius. She is transfixed on Luther and holds the same influence over events that Hannibal Lechter did from his cell block. Ruth Wilson plays Alice, who gives a chilling performance as the "prime mover unmoved" in the drama. Season 2 suffered from her absence.

Season 4 unearths another very enigmatic female in the person of Megan Cantor - who is as mysterious as Alice and (maybe) just as deadly. I hope there is a season 5 to see what happens.

Another fascinating relationship is established in season 4 when Luther crosses paths with George Cornelius, who appears to be a crime lord. He and Luther have a congenial understanding/relationship based on their needs. They remind me of the relationship between Raylon and Boyd in "Justified." If you do not recognize that reference - you have some watching to do - check out "Justified."

The final impression I have of the show is that it makes me really glad we have the second amendment. The people of London and the police are at the mercy of anyone with a hammer, knife or a gun who have some deep seated issues, or are merely having a bad day. The police are always at a disadvantage - arming themselves with pipes or boards as they face down the bad guys. Very interestingly though is the fact that Luther uses words and psychology to disarm many of his foes - usually with success, but at a serious price to himself and those around him.

Enough bloviating on my part. If this kind of stuff is your cuppa at all, check out "Luther" - you will love it.

Brilliant, funny, but very scary
27 February 2017
How to make a comedy out of very tragic events and characters? Adrian Brody did it in "Life Is Beautiful" about life in a concentration camp. "Look Who's Back" does it via the premise that Adolf Hitler returns to modern day Germany. Of course everyone believes that he is an actor - one who disturbingly never steps out of character. The audience knows that he cannot - as he actually is Hitler. Much of the film is humorous as Hitler tries to reestablish himself as "The Fuhrer" and tries to understand and cope with modern day technology and attitudes.

Oliver Masucci is brilliant as Hitler -playing the role so straight that he became very scary near the end. The brilliance of Hitler was aptly demonstrated as people began responding to the hate - filled rhetoric he employed on various television shows. In real life the industrialists supported Hitler because they were sure they could control him - they could not. The church supported him because they thought he would be useful to them and that they could control him - they could not. Finally the German Army threw in with him because they wanted to get rid of their rivals - Hitler's "brown shirt" Army - the Sturmabteilung (SA). He got rid of Strasser and Rohm and thousands of others as he dismantled the organization which carried him to power. But alas the Army also could not control him.

In the movie, he becomes a media star because of viewership and ratings. We see glimpses of the audience saying like "I think I agree with him, and he makes a lot of sense." The TV moguls are building their careers on his outrageousness and resulting popularity.

His grasp on people is creepy, insidious and feels quite realistic. This film shows you how riveting he could be - and gives you a glimpse into how he came to power.

So, beyond laughs - the message clearly is that this could happen again. We must be aware of potential dictators in our midst. A few people in the movie saw that he really was Hitler - and they were discarded at the end of the movie.

This movie is not a condemnation of Germany - past or present. Hitler in the movie postulates at the end of the film that we cannot get rid of him - because he is a part of us. I hope that is not true.
