Wu Dang (2012)

I dont know whats going on, do they know whats going on (a fashion show)?
1 July 2020
Ok, so Im a little behind here (came out in 2012, this review is 2020 covid19) and I just ran into this movie randomly. Its funny, its got action (not the best) and its got...some made up story. I actually dont really know, whats going on here. Hey Chinese cinema, if you read this hopefully itll help!

Chinese movies are awesome, beyond words! Not this one though. Not even sure what its about. Wheres the back bone story? what treasure, what map? what fight competition? who is who and why are they interested?

I will assume this is a fashion show? I mean, modern fur hoodies LOL!!! And Taoism outfits? The cast should have rebelled about the costumes!! But thats micro compared to, why this movie was even made? someone had money to waste? theres not core. Who are these people? If I was working on this set, I would have been like, " hey boss, why are we here? They dont know why their here, why are we here? Is this some sort of movie?"

Anyways, this is awful to the highest level. Ive seen worse but at least they tried to have a core. This movie, has no base or anything relevant to why its even made. Why are they even fighting???????????????? Most movies have a reason, there is not reason here!! NONE!

Although, the female actress is hot....what a waste, hot actress in a nonsense no reason movie. Literally, no core no reason. LOL, modern fur hoodies!! LOL WOW

Good movie, not great not awful - No spoilers on this review
18 May 2020
I know nothing about this movie before I watched it, never even seen the trailer.

I am a Vince Vaughn fan so I decided to watch it. The pace is slow, actually boring. But its that type of movie. No CGI, no special effects, this is all talk and some fighting with a lot of kicking when someones down (must be Dukes imagination of how a fight should be...or how he got bullied, in his actual past?)

So these two guys get into a small circle of semi organized crime, drugs. There isnt much show of how powerful this group is but its a given, not cartel level. The two guys are forced into a friendship and they soon become "promoted" unexpectedly. Their sort of redneck-ish and not the brightest, so they make a lot of mistakes. Which leads to their downfall. History, character build up and flashbacks make up half the film. Director does himself a obvious favor by giving himself the hot girl (Eden Brolin) in the movie, good move for a dorky nerdy looking dude.

Overall, decent to watch. As my review title says, and this is absolutely honest, its a good movie, not great not awful. People at work wont be saying, "Hey have you seen the movie called Arkansas? Well, you should!" <-- not going to happen.

Darn good movie!
2 January 2013
This movie was excellent!! I cannot say anything bad about it.

I know nothing about its comic and anime history, never even heard of Samurai X! I am not an anime fan, I don't have to be just because some of you are. I watched this movie because I saw the trailer. I just heard that it was based on the anime (or comic) when I finished the movie and read these reviews.

So I guess this review is for those who didn't know anything about its history. this movie is cool! its fun and its exciting to watch. The characters are cool. I got a little confused at the beginning of who is who and who was once who. But it all came together. The sword fight scenes are cool. I like that they even used some hand to hand combat scenes. The plot was in front of you, so it makes me wonder how anyone can miss it. Especially some of the reviewers on here complaining about a confusing plot. Its about the bad guys selling opium...so if you got confused because you thought it was about football or elephants then maybe you should go see a shrink and get your head checked. Its literally, right there! Not at anytime did they try to trick you into thinking this was a movie about gangs in Los Angeles. There's a scene where the bad guy says, I want to sell opium to the world. To me, thats usually a dead give away.

The story is about an assassin thats vowed not to kill again (Kenshin/Battousai is one person). He runs into a female dojo owner and later rescues her (Kaoru). She returns the favor by allowing his a place to stay. A female stumbles into the dojo and gravitates them towards a psyco-lunatic-obssessive-obnoxious opium dealer with an army of rogue samurais. Kenshin now has to decide if he wants to bring out his old assassin ways or take the new road of helping people. Certain events take place which helps him make his decision.

I can understand how some of you can be disappointed because you know the history. But allow the rest of us to enjoy the movie! because it is a good movie! I really enjoyed the two main characters, Kenshin/Battousai and Kaoru. The rest of the actors and actresses just added flavor. If you are into samurai movies or not, this is still a pretty decent movie to watch.

Something I found different was the hand shakes, when Kenshin meets the orphan boy and Megumi. Or maybe I just do not know Japanese history but I always assumed they just bowed....

Unsure why these people had a movie made for them
12 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS, ENTIRE STORY TOLD IN ONE PARAGRAGH*** Unsure why these people had a movie made for them, seriously.

These are just everyday people....and they got a movie made about them. Also something tells me, that Beth at that time was a little more wild then portrayed in the film.

This movie is about Beth (Rebecca Hall), period. Then she meets Dink, Bruce Willis. Dink introduces her to gambling, in Vegas. Dink has a wife (Catherine Z-J.), who doesn't really seem to have a true bonding with Dink. But who cares, its Vegas...so I sensed from the film. Things don't work out with Beth and Dink (gambling not relationship). Beth meets nerdy guy Jeremy. Then Beth goes back to Dink again (for gambling not relationship). Things don't work out again. She moves to NYC with Jeremy. She meets Rosie (Vince Vaughn). She starts the gambling again. a lil twist in the story and Bammmm, movies over....thats simple. I just told you the whole entire story. literally.

These are just everyday people, like you and I, and they had a movie made of themselves and somehow got Willis, Zeta-Jones and Vaughn to act in this super slow movie. It is not an awful movie! thats not my point. my point is, why was this movie even made? someone....did some major ahheemm 'under the table' work to get this movie made...hence, my hint at the beginning of this review that says, "also something tells me that beth was little more wild...." and so, if you got time to waste and want a little feel of Vegas, watch this. if you miss this movie, no big deal. There is no message in this movie. There is no core point. There is no reason to even make this movie.....why not a movie of Optimus Prime's life?, how about Bruce Lee?...how about me!? that dude writing this...you! the dude or dudette reading this!.....why Beth!?? nothing happens in this movie! again, not bad just why!

Good but not great near B movie-ish
5 November 2012
This is not my first review. I lost my password to my other account here on IMDb. This is important as some would think i'm a planted reviewer or I know nothing about writing reviews.

I originally voted this with a 6 out 10 stars. But then I realized, it really could have been better. Yet keep in mind that I wouldn't vote any higher.

This movie is good, without a doubt. But it is not great nor is it even worthy of any nominations or awards...this is borderline B movie whether its just my opinion or not it really is borderline B movie.

complex storyline with some cool intertwining of characters. but still didn't make this movie mainstream. I picked up on the 'give-away' lines as they were spoken during the movie. I caught them right away so I am sure many of you did also.

Was the cabin scene with the little girl and her family even necessary? maybe for character building....was the fight scene with the Indian even necessary?.....was there a hint of incest??? was not totally clear. also, the ending could have been a little more clear or detailed on Jays outcome.

Not sure about the dinner scene at the end, not sure if any robber/killer would sit everyone down like that to have dinner.

so basically, this movie doesn't come together too well...its got the right direction but I think it misfired on a lot of issues....

yes, please watch it...its OK....maybe a 4 out of 10 stars would have been appropriate...acting was good actually....I am sure you will like this movie but you're not gonna buy the DVD.
