Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Not what it seems
Per 10 USC 8323, 10 USC 1370, OPNAVINST 1811.3A, the entire basis of the movie is wrong. US Navy Captains (O6) are forced to retire after 30 years of service. Maverick was already a lieutenant when he first went to Top Gun in 1986. He would have been forced to retire around 2014. There are no Captains in the US Navy on flying status after 30 years of service, let alone sixty year old active flight instructors.
Hollywood is just running out of ideas, so they rehash old material. But movies like this are successful only because they like action and don't care if it's based on reality. And the clichés are tiresome.
The Exorcist (1973)
Still one of the top five scariest of all time
Only the 2002 version of "The Grudge" and its sequel are scarier than the Exorcist. The reason why it is still considered the scariest is because no one in 1973, when it was released, had ever seen such special effects and true to life horror, especially the conversation with the demons. The flashback of his mother caused me to have tingles all over. When this movie was released, there were reported incidents of paramedics having to physically remove some movie patrons because they were paralyzed with fear, having had such a psychological shock, some of them had to be sent to a mental hospital for weeks and undergo treatment. Even the trailers on Saturday morning during my cartoons were traumatic, and I had nightmares all the time. It really is a scary movie with a true scare, giving a true glimpse of the nature of evil.
Who's Harry Crumb? (1989)
Absolutely Awful
I could see right through the plot. Blake Edwards had the Pink Panther series in the 1970's, so Robert Conte and Peter Wortman thought they could duplicate that humor and originality with a witless, bungling detective full of disguises. It failed miserably in that respect, like a joke that's been told so many times it's actually annoying. Not one bit of the movie is funny just in that regard, and all I could think of was "copy-cat, copycat" the whole time I could bear only fragments of it. John Candy is simply not funny, even in character disguises. The plot is simple enough, but someone funnier would have been more suited for the role, such as Steve Martin, Billy Crystal or I would go so far as to say Bobcat Goldwaithe. A flop in all respects, but that's just my take.
The Quick and the Dead (1995)
Another melting pot unwatchable picture
Two stars for set direction and costumes. The rest--well, I cannot bear to watch because of typecasts. I don't see Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone and Leonardo DiCaprio. I see Sheriff Little Bill (Unforgiven), Ginger McKenna (Casino) and Monsieur Candie (Django Unchained) or Jack Dawson (Titanic). These roles are fresh in my memory and they are all out of place in The Quick and the Dead. I again blame the casting director for using too familiars instead of up and coming unknown actors, which would have made it much more believable and watchable. I can't bear it as is.
Maverick (1994)
Can bear it
I'm sure the script is a good one, but when I see James Garner, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster on the screen, I can't help but to see James Rockford, Mad Max and Agent Starling all in different roles. Way too familiar. The casting director is at fault here. Should have had up and coming unknowns rather than the three main characters being typecast. Does not work for me and comes off as a vaudeville. Can't bear to ever see it again.
