Zhi zun wu shang (1989)
nice plot, offering some insight...SPOILERS maybe included
This movie has a nice plot, about brotherhood and friendship between 2 "tricksters". The best part was the revenging and final showdown on the gambling table. During this final short scene, most of the viewers will be offered an insight into the mind of a trickster and will have a feeling of "enlightenment". POSSIBLE SPOILERS***** Viewers who pay careful attention to find out who those machine guns guys will know that they are Italians. And thus they should be the Mafia. Viewers are in for another "enlightenment" even after the gambling showdown, the "Asia's first gambling king" not only win the game wonderfully, but having a setup such that his enemies(the Yakuza head and his godson) killed each other.
Chi Wan San sap sam tai bo (1995)
excellent story with educational value.. there might be SPOILERS!!!
This film is one of those films that do not glorifies being in a secret society nor being a drug addict. Instead, this film portray the voice of many gangsters and drug addicts. And the end of the show is about how an ex drug addict kick his drug habit with just a helping hand , his willpower and the care of his loved ones.
The early part of the film is on joining secret society. Some useful issues is revealed like why some people join secret society (to bully others or get protection) and how bossy a boss is. Then it moves on to the negative impacts of being a gangster, from being drifted apart from family members to fighting to how seeing friends killed in a gang fight is devastating to how a gangster is afraid of the police and other hoodlums.
The rest of the film is about the gangster turned drug addict. Now the negative impacts shown ranges from being weak and useless to having lesser friends to further drifting from family and loved ones. But just as the going gets tough for the main character, he received a helping hand and eventually kick his drug habit. The film ends with his receiving of some award and advising every hoodlums and drug addicts to change.
Li Luo Fu qi an (1993)
not bad
This show wasn't really excellent in any particular aspect but is quite more than average nonetheless. There is an adequate quantity of violence, though much care was taken to ensure that no scenes are extremely "scary" nor "disgusting" except for one. The corrupted police force and the internal conflicts between 2 gangland figures is featured in the movie.
Viewers can catch a GLIMPSE of the underworld in Hong Kong under the British Influence like the nightclub, brothel, gambling rackets, drug trafficking and corruption.
Nonetheless this film has some entertainment value, especially the fighting part. This film has historical values and purpose.
Back to Back (1996)
great but missing something
Everything about this movie is fine, and of course the bullets flying scenes are great. But since the title is American Yakuza 2, it seems to neglect the "Yakuza" part, especially the guy in black should have deserved more action. The prowess of the Yakuzas was portrayed in scenes like the man in white chop off the hand and escape the police station. And this movie showed the fact that some corrupt cops are in cahoots with the MOB.
Furthermore without more action from the yakuzas, this movie just seems like another 2 super fit gunmen blasted bullets through a mob of people.
Wan Chai ji foo (1994)
4 friends rising to the top
This film is about four extremely close friends and one of them being the head of a gang, or rather a Triad. most Asians will be familiar with the themes associated with Triads portrayed by the Hong Kong Shows--betrayal, brotherhood, righteousness, violence, Vendetta and the cold underworld. No doubt that some of these themes are actually minor in this whole show. Just like most other movies, romance is included.
This show is actually not very violent. The actual scenes involving guns are normally very short, lasting only a few seconds. The longest gun scene lasts only slightly more than 1 minute and blood is rarely to be seen.
The ending of the movie is quite sad, as the main character is just so close to escaping the cold grip of the underworld and the vendetta he incurred.
