The Lie (2018)
No blockbuster but good weeknight movie
As with many movies you do question some of the characters choices but I enjoyed this movie and it certainly isn't a bad film. I wasn't expecting the twist when it came.
It's about a broken family where two parents unexpectedly have to work together to cover up an accident for the love of their daughter.
You learn more about the daughters character to the point where the mother admits to the doting father than there might be something wrong with their daughter. It would take longer for that realisation to set in with the father but none of it deters either parent from going to any lengths to cover for the daughter.
I wouldn't characterise this film as a slow burner. The first few minutes throws you in at the deep end and then you're along for the ride. Good suspense film that sends your mind in one direction then the next.
American Horror Story: Requiem 1981/1987: Part 1 (2022)
Just awful
20 mins into episode 9 and I finally gave up. This is without a doubt the worst script and the worst acting for any AHS season. It's cringeworthy rubbish and snowflake stereotype of the worst kind. I'm gutted I wasted as much time as I did to go 9 episodes deep and decide it's dire. I doubt I'll watch any further seasons.
I can't believe that a quality actor like Zachary Quinto would be associated with such a poor show. He must have read the script so is he struggling for work? If I'd picked this script up I'd have declined to take part. It's self righteous and undignified tosh and I can't believe Disney is streaming it.
Apex (2021)
What have I just watched
This is one of the worst films I've ever seen. Why are Paramount making customers suffer this? I'd be embarrassed to have this on my network.
Bad acting, bad script, bad CGI at the end (most won't make it to the end).
It's put a dampener on my weekend. Must find something good to fix this.
The Card Counter (2021)
This film doesn't know what it wants to be
I hated everything about this film which is unusual for me. Firstly the title is misleading. This film has nothing to do with card counting. There isn't a single seen where you see anything about card play. If you were expecting a Rounders type movie this definitely isn't for you.
Secondly the music is awful. Whoever chose the songs to this I have no idea what they had in mind.
The film was boring, directionless, plotless. It left me feeling actually depressed. I wish I had never watched this movie.
The actors are great. I just wish they'd done something different with this film.
The Guilty (2021)
Doesn't work from start to finish
The main character is just not believable as a Police Officer or 911 operator. The dialogue ruins what could have been an entertaining film. I did like the twist.
The amount of anger in the movie ruins it - as it's misplaced, badly timed and not appropriate for the movie. 911 operators arguing about sending a squad car to a house where the mother of a 6 year old and a baby has been kidnapped because they're backed up with calls dealing with wild fires is just utterly bonkers. Even the worst 911 operator in the world would prioritise getting someone to check on the children.
The rest of the character interactions just don't make sense either. Even the conversations with his partner - did anyone think his partner was with his wife?
Calls (2017)
The whole thing is an 'experience'
I rarely write reviews but felt I had to for this. It's not so much a TV show or a podcast. It's new, and it's different. I watched the whole show today and it was an absolutely fantastic experience that left me wanting for more. Apple have done really well bringing this to us.
I hope they do something similar or there's a second season. I was gripped from start to finish and will definitely be recommending this to my friends and family.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Worst version of Star Trek
It's politically correct not ambitious. It also has the worst representation of the Klingons we've seen to date. Whilst it tries to have strong female leads they call the main character, a female, Michael. It's excruciating in parts. As a Star Trek fan I hate it. As a Sci-Fi fan I hate it. As someone who likes great TV shows of many genres I find it preachy. It's not genuine and just kind of sickly.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
By far the worst Star Wars Movie
Having just bought this for £13.99 on iTunes I was thoroughly disappointed. The story is virtually non existent. There are so many plot holes. The rise of Skywalker is a story about a non skywalker.
There's plenty of action and some surprise cameo's which were welcome.
Ian's performance of the Emperor was a class bit of acting let down by bad script. Our hero is told that they must kill the Emperor to inherit his spirit and to be the new Emperor - only for the Emperor to try to kill our hero, but the hero betters the Emperor with none of the consequences i.e. they don't get his spirit. The story line is just weak. The force capabilities seen are new - different to what has been set out in the previous movies. Death seems to have no meaning anymore because anyone can come back at anytime with zero explanation.
How did the Emperor come back to life or survive the fall in Return of the Jedi? If you want to know the answer to this then watching the movie will not reveal anything there.
Dark Matter (2015)
Wish I could get a refund
I bought the first episode on iTunes and wish I hadn't bothered. My main issue is that there are no subtitles available for the show which is poor for 2016. The show seems to copy themes from other shows e.g. words like FTL (Battlestar Galactica) and the shuttle they use is a Marauder (which looks exactly like a Ferengi Marauder Starship off Star Trek TNG).
As I said I can't recommend this show due to no subtitles being available which is hugely disappointing as despite my points above it probably has potential.
If you don't mind that you might get some enjoyment from the show. I'm glad I only paid for the first episode - I won't be buying the series due to their being no subtitles and I couldn't complete watching the first episode. I'm not deaf but I watch all shows with subtitles on because these days sound effects and background noise make hearing what is actually being spoken very difficult. This might just be me though.
Game of Thrones: No One (2016)
For me a great round up for Arya
I really loved this episode and whilst I understand some of the critics so far I was engrossed with the story. This was my favourite episode of the season. Yes, it's somewhat unrealistic that Arya can be as strong as she is with the wound she received but it brought this chapter a nice closure for me to move her onto the next bit.
Her blind scenes made sense for me. As if the training led to this final test where she had to fight for her life, cutting the candle light at the end where I knew there and then she could survive because of all the training she'd had in the dark. You didn't need to see anything - you just knew.
At the end where she met the man of many faces and he said, finally a girl is no-one and she replied a girl is Arya Stark and she's going home - for me that was poetic. It was as if the whole thing was about her learning about herself to go home with a purpose. She'd lost her family, she'd lost everything so who was she? Everything she went through gave her a purpose and she know's who she is.
I could be wrong but I think it was set up for that. So to call it unrealistic when there are dragons, and faceless gods, and people brought back to life I think well you just have to go with it. It's about the meaning. I thought it was brilliant.
And to see the hound. Well I don't need to say anymore.
