Death to 2020 (2020)
Dumpster Fire
Movie is terrible. Typical of the masses to want to bury pain, to want to ignore it, and forget about it and move on. How about a movie taking people inside hospitals during Covid? Maybe then people will actually learn something so history doesn't repeat itself when a deadlier virus comes along.
Utterly pathetic, low brow, unfunny, piece of garbage.
The Vast of Night (2019)
The Vast of Suck
Astoundingly bad. A few quick notes:
- Rottentomatoes is a sham. Who bribed who to get this 90+%? Ridiculous
- Pretentious hipster title should is a red flag
- Pretentious self-conscious 10-minute opening sequence with pointless dialog is a red flag
- Bad directing of self-conscious actors who know they're acting in a hipster trying-to-be-cool indie movie is a red flag
- The movie absolutely sucking is a red flag
Yeah, this movie was terrible. Boring. Aimless. Watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind if you want a good alien contact movie. This was truly terrible. And makes me fear for the future of movies if critics actually think this garbage is good. The Vast of Suck. 0/10.
The Sound of Silence (2019)
Great film about a fascinatingly plausible profession
Everything is on point here - the cast, the direction, the script, the lighting and look of the film, and its core exploration of an obsession "house tuner" and his unique profession. The film is a true gem that raises questions about whether or not the main character and his research is the real deal or sudo-science. And like all great film - it doesn't provide easy answers, rather it makes you think.
Well done. Look forward to the writer and director's next project.
Don't Let Go (2019)
Never want to relive watching this
This has to be the worst film to premiere at Sundance in half a decade. The fine cast does its best but the script just offers them a nonsensical sci-fi conceit that is never developed and paper thin cliche characters and dialog. Very disappointing.
The Rider (2017)
Great movie. Powerful.
Saw this at Sundance. Great film. None of the people in the film are actors. It aids in the realism but also is a testament to the director's ability. This is a subtle, emotionally impactful experience. By the end of it your heart breaks but is also hopeful. Good story of friendship and also coming to grips with not being able to do what you truly love to do. How does one make life meaningful?
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Terrible. Shockingly amateurish.
Really bad. An amateurish scatter-shot story packed full of cliches and bats*** crazy ideas thrown against a wall is not daring, it's bad. It doesn't even make sense. It's a ham-fisted attempt to make a statement that utterly fails.
That this film is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes is disturbing and astounding.
There were good films at Sundance this year. "Sorry to Bother You" is not one of them. And yes, I accept your apology. You bothered me, namely wasting two hours of my life.
Love & Mercy (2014)
One of the worst films ever made. "Man Staring At Pool & Ceiling"
Holy ****.
How the hell is this getting positive reviews? Nothing worked. Melodramatic. Poor acting. It played like an episode of VH1 Behind the Music. It's like Dewey Cox but it takes itself seriously. Repetitive. Nauseating. Just awful. Shockingly awful.
(SPOILER) The ending apes 2001 Space Odyssey. And fails miserably. It's crap of the highest order. A film trying to be moving but only coming off as pretentious and tedious is an epic failure. I know I'm speaking in generalities right now, but:
More to come -- I'll flesh out this review when I have more time tomorrow.
