The Marvels (2023)

Hideous
5 April 2024
Disney takes down Captain Marvel. A further evisceration of the Marvel franchise overall.

This looked as though it was filmed for the disney channel, and should not have been allowed on the big screen. It should have been a disney channel exclusive, in that way I would have been spared the half hour I spent watching, in disbelief. O_o I didn't know that it would be a musical. They could have used the intro for the Lion King... that would have been at least interesting to listen to. Should have left what was scripted on the cutting room floor.

Also maybe one scene with the alien cat, there was no need for more.

Dry, stale, no substance, humor, if there was any fell flat, didn't even smile once. Acting was sub-par, the story line revolved around... bracelets? Okay then.

Didn't hate it, didn't like it, didn't even finish the first half hour. O_o Well alright then, everything is normal for disney vomit. Nothing to see here.

Next.

Marvel Cinematic Universe is Doooomed
15 November 2022
No, just no. Nothing else but no.

Boring, unentertaining. Got a little bit past the half-way mark and turned it off. The most bland, attempts at humor (no laughs at all). Stammering and awkward dialogue. CGI waaaaay sub-par.

This should have been a straight to DVD release, or recalled due to cinematic defects. (Shouldn't there be a consumer warning posted on this hideousness?)

Done with the Thor franchise, and if the dominoes keep falling the way I think they are going to? Done with the Marvel Universe now that Disney is destroying Stan Lee's legacy.

Usually I don't even pay attention to the reviews of others until I see it for myself. I saw this train-wreck albeit half-way, and now understand what others are talking about.

If Thor: Love and Thunder is a portent of things to come under the Disney... the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Doooomed.

Dang it... the movie poster got me
16 October 2022
Well okay here we go.

Just finished watching the film. Rather than excoriating the effort for it's shortcomings perhaps we'll look at the positive side. Refreshing to see a Vampire film through the Van Helsing point of view.

There wasn't a lot of gore, or jump scenes, and the location scenes were really cool. The dialogue pretty much stayed true to the period.

As some reviews have mentioned, yeah the pace was a little slow.

I really had a hard time matching the movie score/ music to the film, so I hit the "mute" button, and turned on the closed captions. Ya know sumpin'? It worked!

With the slower pace, and the music being so distracting watching with captions on actually made the film more interesting the rest of the way through.

If you decide to watch the film, try it out. I'm trying to help you out here.

Got to admit, the art department scored an A+ with the movie poster as that was what drew me in.

A different slant on the Vampire Genre
4 August 2022
Not sure about the negative reviews, however, the film wasn't the disaster some are writing about it.

It is a different slant on the Vampire Genre, with more of a: "Tortured Artist, meets Tortured Soul" thing going on.

There was a lot being said without the need for dialog to get in the way of the viewer to use their own imaginations.

I like that approach rather than being spoon fed all the way through a film.

Art, addiction, regret, and perhaps finding love after all?

The actress "Tortured Soul" (Sarah Roemer) nailed the piercing stare aspect of the Vampiress Vivian. Sarah also projected the anguish and longing of her undead character.

(Luke Grimes) did a pretty damned good job of portraying Max, the films "Tortured Artist".

Anyway, I didn't think the film to be too bad, and yes... I would watch it again.

BTW: The painting. What would you have seen? Good topic for a conversation.

When you're bored, and want to be excited to be more bored.
13 July 2022
It's not very often that can honestly review a movie, and call it boring. Morbius, overall is boring. Predictably boring. What happened? Boring. However, do not believe me. See it for yourself. When you're bored, and want to be excited to be more bored.

30 minutes in and done.
21 May 2022
What a trainwreck. It started out okay, and then it started to get bad. Then it got really bad, and very uninteresting. I tried to give it a chance, but when I found other things to do, I thought: "Yup, better get those things done." Shut the movie off and didn't look back...

Daniel Craig's 007, his finest hour
13 February 2022
What's this? James, you mean to tell us that under that highly trained, nerves of steel, to Queen and Country exterior, beats the heart of a man after all?

That's extraordinary.

After the first watching of this film I have to say: "I didn't see that coming".

Lots of twists and turns in this outing for 007. Action packed, and good to see the classic Aston Martin still fully loaded, and ready for action in a classic chase scene.

The pace of the film is toned down a bit, and almost has to be to fully absorb the nebulous menace surrounding what has to be Bond's toughest assignment yet.

The villain of the film stoic, cerebral, masterly could just be James Bond's match. Or is he...?

I think I am going to go out on a limb here, and say that this is: "James Bond in his Finest Hour."

Hunted (2012)

Great new take on an old film genre, very well done.
20 June 2021
From the first scene until the last Rufus 'aka' Hunted is actually a really good movie. I wasn't sure what to expect as the Vampire genre has literally been bled to death, however this film does a great job of keeping your attention all the way through. The acting was spot on, and so was the story line. The music score wasn't too shabby either. The end of the movie was awesome as well. Just when you think it's going to move one way, it turns out to go in a direction you wouldn't expect.

Don't take my word for it though. Do yourself a favor, watch it for yourself. I'm glad I did, and it would be great to see more movies like this one from these very talented creators in the future. They nailed it with this one.

This movie is all mashed up.
23 May 2021
So let's see if we take elements of Twilight Zone - Nightmare at 20,000 Feet (The Gremlin), Aliens - The character Ripley (motherly protective instincts), toss in a heavy dose of 1940's toxic male syndrome, and some domestic abuse, we should be able to make an entertaining movie right?

Well, not so much. What was the movie trying to accomplish other than wasting the viewers time, and ripping off idea, after idea that have already been done before in movies that actually had original storlines around a basic idea. Chloe Frace Moretz was terrible in this. Not one tear was shed during her performance. Not one.

There really wasn't any dialogue, or plot, and would have been better filmed as a silent movie, in Black and White with flash cards. No one in this film should have said a word. Not one, then this film may have stood a chance of being tolerable.

The best part of the film was the plane explosion which pretty much sums up this films ability to fly. It didn't, and like the plane in the film, the whole movie crashed and burned.

Supergirl (2015–2021)

Fell to Earth with a "THUD".
27 September 2020
Normally, I'll give a series at least three episodes, and if the series hasn't fallen into the usual pitfalls of today's entertainment industry lameness, I may just stick around for a while. I had to wander off at episode 3. I just couldn't buy into "evil" Kryptonians staying hidden from humanity angle, even with Superman in the big city next door. General Zod came to Earth, and right off the bat started leveling the planet. You can't sell a group of interplanetary evil-doers is going to go to a new planet, and "just hang low" to anyone. The other part of the series storyline that didn't fit was all of Supergirls resources were being scooped up into compartments of convenience. The earth "Scooby Gang" had the run of the building they worked in. Supergirls fortress of solitude was built inside the secret agency "Scooby Gang's lair, and to make things worse was supposed to commune with her mother's AI, and all the while telling supergirl: "I'm not programmed for that response"? Puleeese. Kryptonians, were technologically superior in every way. I thought the cast did pretty good with the stretched way too thin script, and storyline of convenience they got stuck with, and tried to make it kind of believable.

An Interesting Take On An Old Classic Story
6 August 2020
Having just watched this movie while still fresh in my mind, I have to say overall, not too bad at all. The cinematography was very good, and it was pretty creepy as well all the way through. You knew something is justifiably not right, and there was no way to put a blackened finger on it. Speaking for myself only, I am glad that movies are being made that have a slower tempo. In this way the pitch of the movie becomes a chess-match between Gretel, and the witch. Interestingly enough although sparsely decorated, the pace of the movie allows you to "look" around more, and observe all the details of each scene. Again, slowly and creepily building up to something. As something is going on... constantly. The characters were fairly well played, although I'm giving a lot of latitude for the younger actors. They were both just a little shy of being good in their roles. Hansel's character, played by Samuel Leakey, was reminiscent of Jake Lloyd (who played a young Anikin Skywalker). In both cases the performances were lackluster, lacked any emotion, or were not quite right for their roles respectively, again putting it kindly, granted both are / were child actors. Next Gretel, played by Sophia Lillis, also could have been a little better, however again, I'm being generous to the young actress. Lastly, the Witch. Played by Alice Krige (awesome performance!) and Jessica De Gouw (awesome performance!) held the entire movie together very well. Such a kind, and sweet, and generous.... Whoa!!! Didn't see that coming! In summary, this movie isn't for someone with attention issues. Sit the heck still, put down your phone. Quit fidgeting around, and enjoy a differently paced movie experience. I know I did, and I'll be watching it again soon.

The Lodge (2019)
9/10
Looks like this Movie touched a nerve for some viewers
30 July 2020
Having seen the preview, I was ready for a good tense creep-out. That's exactly what I got. For the first few minutes of the movie I thought I'd made a mistake, or missed something, however, once Laura made it home after having a bomb-shell dropped on her that all changed. First layer. As the family attempted to adjust, it was clear that Richard wasn't focused enough on his priorities. Second layer. Mia and Aiden sensed something was just not, quite, right these days as the situation went from bad to no hope bad. Third Layer. Enter Grace. A young lady that didn't get a good life start in her very early years, and experienced trauma on a level only reserved for the truly bizarre. Fourth Layer. If you paid close attention you could pick up on the hint of a trail the director's left, however, they were setting you up for a twist that will leave your jaw dropped. There's a pall over the entire film insinuating one (or in this case three) that should not mess with the fates, because they will come, and bring Karma with them. With that, this film sets an unnerving mood. The Lodge hit the spot with its creepy atmosphere, bleak overtones and the subtle but true way of acting to the situation . I genuinely don't know what the angry reviewers saw, but to be fair folks keep the insults towards the directors of this movie to a minimum if you can't be non-partisan. This movie started a little slowly, but once it catches your attention it will hook you, so hang on because you are in for a creepy ride. If you can't keep up, don't set up!

And yet I wonder
6 September 2019
Of the Indiana Jones films the first, and the third are my favorites. Having watched the film again just now, I am perplexed by the ending. I've watch this film hundreds of times and always: "went along for the ride" but for whatever reason I was struck to wonder this. The Knight with a look on his face of disappointment (waiting 700 years for someone worthy to take his place) raises his hand in farewell. Really? He should have been giving our heros the middle single finger salute. He waited 700 years, healed Indy's father, and despite warning them, they bungle up the temple? Okay, sooooo what now? Did the chamber put itself back together again? You know, a divine reset, or something like that? What about the Knight himself? He can't die, he's immortal, and you can't sell me that the cup was lost forever, I don't buy it. There's a reason for that cup being where it was. After all isn't the Ark still stored away in some storage warehouse?

Nope, the alternate ending inside the cave, (Behind the behind the scenes) shows the Knight holding out his hand, reclaiming the cup as the temple puts itself back into divine order to await the next worthy successor. Thus the dust outside the Temple to fool our heros into thinking it was dsetryed. Oh, and the Knight? Patience, always patients.

I think there is an angle for another movie that would tie up all these loose ends.

Great Movie All The Way Around
16 August 2019
I was eight years old and this title was one of many I got to see in the movie house with my mother. It was a great movie then, and it has held up well over time. Even now it's still one of my favorites.

Something is really fishy here, and I know it's this film
13 April 2019
There are no amount of effects, none, zero, that can replace good acting. In this film there is no acting at all. The action was soulless. Nothing special. The story line is the worst. Special effects + Bad acting = terrible film. Now, where did I leave that old copy of Superfriends? O_o

I can't believe I watched the whole thing... O_o
6 April 2019
I'm through with this franchise. This movie is rife with all of today's social topics, while disguising itself in a on 80's theme. They can play the music, wear the clothes, but the dialogue of today creeps in and spoils the recipe. Thanks for nothing.

"Oh Luke, Luke...still whining, Luke. Have you heard enough? I've had to listen to that for centuries."
28 April 2018
What in the heck happened to Star Wars? Having just now (yesterday) watched this mess, I can honestly say: "I'm done with New Star Wars episodes." Done, not interested any more. Let's see if I have this straight. Our new generation of Jedi can speak with each other waaay across space? Um, Jedi masters of the past had to use holographic projections, and even then the reception was limited. Jedi Training? Nope, not no more, I guess there's an app for that. No need to become one with the force with years of training and guidance from a Jedi Master. These days you do your own thing. Dark side? Nope. Not no more, the Dark side of the force is about as sinister as an unopened box of cookies. Where is the unbridled relentlessness for power? Every Jedi is omniscient. Problem is not one force wielding being good, or bad know what's really going on. Neither did I. Half time through this wreck I was asking, "WHAT?" And the whining from every character, Jeeze! Whining Luke, Whining Kylo Ren, Stop it already. Nothing but disappointment have I for the failure and future of this franchise. The fight scenes were weak at best, and where was the awesome lightsaber duel from anyone? Don't even get me started on the forced humor. I was bland, not even grin worthy. I miss one Episode of Star Wars and every Jedi get delusions of grandeur. I put up with Jar Jar Binks annoying voice. I looked past the "Enhanced versions" of the Original three films, but The Last Jedi, is my LAST Star Wars film.

Very Disappointing Sequel
4 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Having watched the first Kingsman film I was all set for another great adventure. Alas it was not to be. The dialogue was chock full of colorful metaphors, every other sentence had F*** or some other juvenile variant in it. Eggsy, our everyday lad that only needed a chance, turned out to be nothing but a whining, sniveling little s***. What's worse the brilliant resilience of The Kingsman organization, is now second class players their American Counterparts "The Statesmen" Who were supposed to be even bigger and more omnipotent than the British organization. They weren't. With the two sides committed out of necessity to a Marvel team up, neither could outwit, or foresee the evil plan of an exiled drug lord. She is supposed to be the apex of the drug under-world, feigning sweetness and charm, and all the while a seething sociopath. The character fell flat. This film way over-reaches, and is stretched so thin it fails in continuity. Wait, did I just hear a piece of the X-Men First Class soundtrack being re-used, when the original Galahad regains his memory? O_o Yup, sure did. Despite the litany of big name stars, Kingsman fails miserably to live up to it's first film. In summary the makers of this film got lazy, and ruined the amazing chemistry of what should have been another epic Kingsman adventure.

When I thought about the movie again
20 August 2017
Let me say that there is nothing about this movie I didn't like. My mind was set on a pure sci-fi experience, but when I thought about the movie again it really touched on the subject of alcohol soaked domestic abuse in all it's various guises on a worldwide scale. The manipulative behaviors of the men around Gloria, blatantly obvious, with the worst hidden behind "I love You facade's". You couldn't help but feel for Gloria as she stumbled her way to finding the courage to make some kind of stand to entrapment. The sci-fi surface story was pretty well told, and the flashbacks kept you wondering "How did this happen"? All the actors were spot on. Timing, and chemistry were riveting, (Loved Anne Hathaway in this!), and really start to drive nails into each other around the middle of the film. There was one moment that lost me, however, if I think on it a little more I figure it out. Definitely worth another watch.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy this little gem.

A Visually Stunning film that will Blow you away
24 February 2017
When looking at movies I happened upon this one out of curiosity, and I am all the better for it. First, clear your mind of the Disney releases and story lines behind them. On many layers this masterful work will enchant you, from beginning to end. Disney should be put on notice, because the makers of this film made Disney look like amateurs. The sets, and costuming epitomize the true essence of what movie magic is all about, and will not disappoint you. Even the ending was wonderfully magical. The film score is awesome. Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux, André Dussollier all should be recognized for their fantastic talents. The makers of this film have something to be truly proud of. This is a lavishly and visually stunning film, completely delightful, and worth watching a few more times to see what you may miss. The details are exquisite to behold. I can with certainty recommend this film to anyone, knowing they will agree.

As candid and honest as it is straight forward
29 December 2016
Having been a New Orleans Saints Fan since 1973 I can honestly say that Who-Dats (Saints Fans) live and die by the New Orleans Saints. Watching the events of Katrina unfold, and the rebuilding of the SuperDome one could only, as a Saints Fan hope for a good season. What I am saying is there is always a unique excitement around anything New Orleans. When Steve blocked that punt against The Saints most bitter rival the Falcons for a touchdown I let out a yell that could have shattered glass. Finding out Steve was diagnosed with ALS did shatter that glass.

Now my unbiased review of "Gleason". Thank You Steve and Michel for this open look into the life of someone with ALS. Taking the time to document and experience travel, or bucket list, and live the best you can while you can. Even larger continuing to genuinely give of yourself for others. Best of all, giving to your family. All the while the disease progressing and deteriorating a bodies ability to function.

Watching the transformation of Steve is very tough, and at times unnerving. Observing Steve and Michel's unwavering honesty is gut wrenching. Reflecting on just how much they both have accomplished through this ordeal is remarkable.

Gleason is a clear eyed and excellently presented documentary.

The DC World is Dark, but I liked the movie
26 December 2016
There is a definitive difference between Marvel Cinema, and DC Cinema. DC is very dark. I'm not a choose sides comic book fan, but if I had to choose Graphic Novel sides (pause for dramatic effect) I would have to go with Marvel Cinema. Marvel is not so heavy on the EMO. Okay, now that that's out of the way on to the review. This film does a lot of situational and introductory background work that rely's on the audiences foreknowledge of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. This film also does this differently than the Marvel Cinema. Overall our heroes are battling with personal choices in doing the right thing for justice sake, and wind up crossing some unspoken boundaries. Still, for all that, there is something going on and Lex Luther is behind it all. You all knew he was psychotically brilliant, but this one is nuts. The action scenes in this film are pretty good, although, paced REALLY fast, and you can miss a lot. I have to say that Ben Affleck fit the roll of Batman very well. Henry Cavill as Superman is still a great choice. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, was not good at all. I personally would have liked to have seen Cobie Smulders cast in the roll. Other than being pretty dark, and a mis-cast for Wonder Woman, I liked the movie for what it is, an introduction platform for things to come.

Oh yeah, what happened to the little sneak peek at the end of the movie?

Now You See Me 2 is not fun
25 December 2016
When I watched the first Now You See Me, I thought: "yeah it's a little bit out there, but it was kind of fun". Now You See Me 2 is not fun. At all. It's a pile of one-up-man-ships that spirals down a hole never to recover. Everyone knows what everyone else is doing. There was nothing at the end to reveal. We saw it coming. There are no surprises anywhere in this film. The story was hollow, and the actors didn't even pull it together. In the first film each magician was at the very least able to move through their illusions to get to the prestige. The horsemen all fall out of their saddles here, and the mysterious order of the eye, is completely transparent. Please do not make a Now You See Me 3. If you do: Now You'll See Me - going to a different movie theater playing something different somewhere else.
