Beatriz at Dinner (2017)
So disappointed
I just didn't enjoy this movie at all. I've been pumped to see it for months. I've loved the trailers and felt for sure I was going to see a movie in which "good triumphs over evil". Selma is beautiful. She is "mother earth" ...she is kind, sweet and compassionate. She is all good things and everything that Lithgow's character is not. His character (which he played well) is ALL that is wrong with this world. He is the "Trumps" of the world. SO Heads Up and Warning: If you go into this movie looking for retribution for all the evil of this world, you won't get it in this film. In the movie, Lithgow represents the perfect psychotic narcissistic ego driven & money-hungry-at-all-costs maniac that permeates our systems. In the beginning, Beatriz begins serving him up exactly what he's needed to hear for a long time. But as the movie progresses, you start to see little innuendos to her being "unstable". (or maybe too many glasses of wine) OK, I get that, we all aren't really THAT perfect, but the writers have her so all over the map that by the time the end comes, even though the writers went to great efforts at the first of the film to make him look like a madman, she looks like the crazy one. And HIS character was the sane "normal". This movie makes "being wrong" right and kindness and compassion not only wrong, but look crazy. I just...hated that.
Megan Leavey (2017)
The story of the bond between humans & animals....
My husband and I were fortunate to attend a premier of this movie last night and we really enjoyed it much more than expected. Although it was meaningful in that my own daughter was a Marine and of course the scenes at graduation ceremony in Parris Island brought back so many memories...but it was her loyalty to this dog and the way they were able to capture it on film that endured me. Despite all the odds against her, she was NOT going to let this dog perish in the system. He deserved better and she fought to make sure he got better. THAT is a beautiful thing! <3
Collateral Beauty (2016)
I'm glad I didn't listen to negative reviews....
Because I really liked this movie. Its a drama...and it was slow to unfold but the message was beautiful. It makes you sad, angry, question...but in the end you learn that ALL those emotions are life and love and I thought the performances portrayed that perfectly. I think you either get that message or you don't. The acting was phenomenal including some real surprise performances. Don't go in expecting cheesy happy "Christmas miracle" endings. Don't expect a block-buster big bang edge of your seat thriller....expect a beautiful film that is taking a difficult topic(s) and turning it into a thing of beauty.
